Esna is located about 33 miles (53 km) south of Luxor. Boats travelling between Luxor and Edfu must pass through the Esna Lock. It will be between 9 pm and dark or it depends on the sailing boat itinerary when the Nile cruise ship arrive but that didnโt stop us from heading to the top deck for a photo op. Two riverboats can fit into the lock at the same time. The process of filling and emptying the lock is fast (maybe 5-6 minutes); most of the time is spent waiting for your turn to enter the lock and getting the boats in position.
