Itinerary of your trip Andalusia Walking & Hiking Tour

  • Day 1 Arrival In Seville & Walking Tour
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Arrival In Seville & Walking Tour

Independent arrival to Sevilla where we will meet you at the hotel in the early afternoon โ€“ we recommend making use of the excellent high-speed train network (AVE), with trains running to Sevilla from any of Madrid, Barcelona or Mรกlaga (all of which have international airports).

In the afternoon we meet up to go on the guided walking tour of the city, including cathedral of Seville, an incredibly adventurous construction and the worldโ€™s largest built in the Gothic period and style. We enjoy an informal stroll around the Santa Cruz district, the former Jewish quarter of the old city center through a labyrinth of streets and small plazas (squares). Welcome dinner in one of Sevilleโ€™s excellent restaurants, the city being well-known in Andalucรญa for its cuisine.

Half Day Exploring Seville With A Local Guide

Our first full day in Andalucรญa is devoted to Sevilla, the regionโ€™s capital and one of Europeโ€™s most captivating cities. Iberians, Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Visigoths had all left their mark before the Moors sited their first capital here. Then after its conquest by the Castilians in 1248 it became a favoured residence of Spanish kings โ€“ indeed, to this day the royal family retains the palace of the Real Alcรกzar, which is one of the twin highlights of our guided walking tour along with the incredibly adventurous construction of the cathedral, the worldโ€™s largest built in the Gothic period and style. From this period we will see mansions, churches, convents and the trading house of The Archive of the Indies which in its day was the epicentre of the trade with the Americas (which when Columbus โ€œdiscoveredโ€ them were, of course, thought to be the โ€œIndiesโ€).

After exploring the Plaza de Espaรฑa we stop for tapas and then you are free to explore independently. Before dinner, we will take in a live performance of flamenco, that quintessentially Andalusian art, in a palatial residence dating from the 15th century where the colonnaded patio, its traditional handcraft tiling, the aroma of the flowers, and the trace of almost six centuries of history, create a unique atmosphere.

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Carmona & Cueva La Batida Hikin

We travel to Carmona, perched on a ridge above the central Andalusian plain for a guided tour. This town is known for its wine, olive oil, and cattle. We make a loop walk which includes the impressive fortress city gate, Puerta de Sevilla and one of the towns many convents - a nice warm up.  In the afternoon we walk along part of a Roman road, the Via Augusta, to a rocky outcrop known as โ€™Cueva de la Batidaโ€™ where caves have been exploited since Roman times for building materials.

Sierra De Grazalema Hike With A Farm Visit - Ronda

Early departure for the region of Grazalema to visit an organic farm followed by a hike in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park with sweeping views far across the plains of Cadiz province and the peaks of the Sierra. After a brief visit to Grazalema we continue to Ronda. Known as โ€œThe Queen of the White Townsโ€, Ronda occupies a spectacular position with the two sides of the town straddling a deep chasm which plunges 130m to the Rรญo Guadalevin below. From atop the gorge there are spectacular views over the surrounding hills and valleys that form the โ€œSerranรญa de Rondaโ€, a term which is a diminutive of the word for mountain, โ€œsierraโ€. Later unwind at our hotel before dinner in a local restaurant.

  • Day 6 El Torcal - Granada
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      El Torcal - Granada

We head east across Andalucรญa today and visit its geographic centre, the city of Antequera, and its imposing natural motif, the karst limestone plateau of El Torcal. Here wind, rain and erosion have wrought strange patterns in the pillars of rock, creating a myriad of sculptures and shapes. With a local guide we will do a circular walk (4.5km, 3 hours) through this unique landscape where we will see ammonites โ€“ a type of fossil which enables scientists to link the rock layer to specific geologic time periods. We are also likely to see many bird species as the area is categorised a โ€œSpecial Zone for the Protection of Birdsโ€. We now travel eastwards to Granada, home to the magnificent Alhambra Palaces (UNESCO). The cityโ€™s old medieval hispano-muslim quarter, the Albaicรญn (UNESCO). We will explore this neighbourhood and its narrow streets, squares and houses with walled gardens and enjoy the views of the Alhambra from here.

      Granada & The Alhambra Palaces

A circular walk in the woods above Granada takes us through the Sacromonte district , home to many excavated cave houses, which for centuries have provided shelter and livelihood to Gypsy people, some still being used today for flamenco performances. In the afternoon we visit the Alhambra Palace, one of Europeโ€™s most stunning monuments and perhaps the greatest surviving legacy from over eight centuries of the Moorish presence on the Iberian Peninsula. Dinner this evening is in a restaurant in the fashionable Realejo district of Granada.

Meals: Breakfast / Picnic lunch / Dinner

Walk: 5 hrs / 14 km / meandering route through cobbled streets and along forest paths ascending gradually to a plateau followed by a descent to the Alhambra.

  • Day 8 Moclin To Zuheros And Olive Oil Experience. 10 Km
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Moclin To Zuheros And Olive Oil Experience. 10 Km

Heading north from Granada, we pass Moorish period watchtowers and castles from the 13th-15th centuries when this was the Christian frontier with the Muslim sultanate of Granada. We will walk from one such castle, in the village of Moclรญn, on a delightful 10km circular walk through the valley of the Rio Gollizno which we cross via a hanging bridge. As we climb back up to the town there are superb views of the castle walls and fortifications which, along with the picnic in the shade of pine trees, will reward us for our efforts.

Our journey then continues to the village of Zuheros, a typical white village with a medieval castle keep, which sits on the edge of the Sierra Subbรฉtica Natural Park and overlooks a sea of olives. In the late afternoon we are guests of local olive farmers, first among the trees in their olive grove and then at dinner in their village with a spread of dishes cooked with their wonderful extra virgin olive oil and olives - a rare insight into Spanish agriculture and rural life.

Meals: Breakfast / Picnic lunch / Dinner

Walk: 4 hrs / 12 km  / a circular route descending a long river valley that then ascends steeply back up to the village of Moclin.

  • Day 9 Sierra Subetica Walking
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Sierra Subetica Walking

After breakfast we are driven to the nearby town of Cabra where , among other curiosities, we find the sword allegedly once used by El Cid! Outside the town our walk begins from the rocky summit occupied by the hermitage of Virgen de la Sierra which, at 1267m altitude, gives us great views across the Natural Park. The Park is largely of a rugged limestone terrain with spectacular scenery and is home to one of southern Spainโ€™s largest breeding colonies of griffon vultures, as well as around 70 other bird species, and herds of semi-wild horses. The walk back to Zuheros, is largely descending, through holm oak woods and along the Rรญo Bailรณn, taking us around 5 hours to reach the village. Time to relax back at the hotel in the late afternoon before dinner.

Meals: Breakfast / Packed lunch / Dinner

Walk: 5 hrs. / 16 km / a linear route along flat broad paths and a gradual descent followed by a short, stony downhill section as we enter the Rรญo Bailon valley and are rewarded with spectacular views as we descend to Zuheros village.

We then drive further into the Sierra Morena and hike to a forested beauty spot called Banos de Popea, a series of pools and waterfalls of great beauty caused by the effect of erosion on limestone rock. After our picnic we head to the city of Cรณrdoba arriving mid-afternoon. As we stroll to dinner, we can take-in the wealth of history and culture spanning over two millennia in Cรณrdoba and afterwards admire the city skyline dominated by the Cathedral-Mosque from the old Roman bridge.
