Guide

All Intrepid group trips in Europe are accompanied by one of our local European group leaders. โ€™Localโ€™ in this context means a leader who is European or lives in Europe. The aim of the group leader is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Intrepid endeavours to provide the services of an experienced leader however, due to the seasonality of travel, rare situations may arise where your leader is new to a particular region or training other group leaders. Your leader takes care of logistics, will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects. At Intrepid we also aim to support local guides in the individual cities or locations we travel to. If you are interested in delving deeper into the local culture at a specific site or location then your leader can recommend an optional local guide service in most of the main destinations of your trip.

Transport

TRANSPORT IN EUROPE: Half the fun of travel is the travelling itself, thatโ€™s why we like to travel the local way โ€“ whether that means mingling with commuters on a local train, watching the scenery roll by from the window of a long distance bus, arriving on a high speed train in the city centre of your next destination, or navigating each cityโ€™s public transport system. In Europe, you are guaranteed to travel by genuine local public transport wherever possible, which puts you right in the centre of the action. LONG TRAVEL DAYS: As we cover lots of ground on this trip, expect some long travel days on local trains and buses. This is an opportunity to mix with the locals and enjoy the scenery out the window. Travel schedules are known to change with little notice. Not all transport may have air conditioning. Private vehicle

Accommodation

The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation. Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if weโ€™re arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isnโ€™t always possible which means we wonโ€™t be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available. Hotel (6 nights), Feature Stay (2 nights)

Itinerary of your trip Premium Sweden And Norway

  • Day 1 Day 1: Stockholm
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 1: Stockholm

Valkommen! Welcome to Sweden. When you arrive in Stockholm, youโ€™ll be picked up from the airport and transferred to your accommodation. Often referred to as the โ€™Venice of the Northโ€™ and arguably Scandinaviaโ€™s most beautiful city, Stockholm is packed full of amazing architecture, parks and clear waters. Your adventure will begin with a welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight. If you arrive early, maybe stroll by the narrow cobblestone streets and colourful merchant houses and soak up the culture. Maybe grab a cinnamon roll in Stockholmโ€™s oldest cafรฉ โ€“ Sundbergs Konditori, on Jarntorget Aquare โ€“ dating back to 1785. Tonight, youโ€™ll have a welcome dinner with your trip leader and group to toast to a new adventure.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Stockholm
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 2: Stockholm

This morning after breakfast, youโ€™ll head out on a leader-led walking tour of Gamlastan (the Old Town of Stockholm) to get your bearings. Along the way, make a fika stop (for coffee and pastry) for morning tea and refuel for your free time this afternoon. Then, why not leave the city behind for a few hours and see the waterways of Stockholm on a cruise? Maybe take a self-guided millennium walking tour or visit the ABBA Museum. You can also take a trip to Drottningholm Palace โ€“ the residence of the Swedish royal family. Tonight, maybe head to Stockholmโ€™s Sodermalm district โ€“ the inner-city island with the best nightlife, full of great shops, bars and cafes. Or maybe sit down at one of the restaurants on the cobblestoned islet of Gamla Stan or in Kungsholmen.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Vadstena
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 3: Vadstena

Leave Stockholm this morning after breakfast and head for the town of Linkoping. When you arrive, take a leader-led tour of the Old Linkoping Open Air Museum โ€“ a reconstructed example of a 19th century Swedish town. Enjoy learning about the areaโ€™s history in a fully immersive experience, then have lunch with your group at a local restaurant. Continue to the shores of Lake Vattern โ€“ Swedenโ€™s second largest and deepest lake. The next two nights will be spent at Starby Hotell, your Feature Stay for this trip. Located on a former 13th century royal estate, there are extensive indoor and outdoor spa facilities for you to use.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Vadstena
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 4: Vadstena

After breakfast this morning, join a local guide for a historical walk around Vadstena. The tour takes you from inside the mighty Renaissance castle through the city and ends at the monastery grounds. Youโ€™ll learn about the castle, the monasteryโ€™s history from the Middle Ages to today, and other stories from the cityโ€™s long history. This afternoon, youโ€™re free to relax on the lake. Or maybe visit one of Vadstenaโ€™s many museums before finding a cosy restaurant for dinner.

  • Day 5 Day 5: Oslo
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 5: Oslo

Leave Vadstena behind this morning and travel to Oslo, admiring the scenery of endless forests and lakes along the way (grab a window seat if you can!). On the way, youโ€™ll stop in one of the local towns for lunch and say your farewells to Sweden. Arrive in Oslo in the late afternoon, take some time to unwind and check in to the hotel. The evening is free for you to explore on your own. Maybe head to a local rooftop bar for nighttime city views or head to Gamla โ€“ Osloโ€™s oldest performance venue โ€“ and catch a jazz or rock gig.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Oslo
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 6: Oslo

This morning after breakfast, discover a city changing for the better on a guided tour of Osloโ€™s centre. Learn about the cityโ€™s rapid urban development, sustainable efforts and modern architecture, before enjoying a free afternoon to explore how you wish. Maybe visit the Ski Museum, housed inside the famous monumental Holmenkollbakken (ski jump), which looks more like a work of art than a sports venue. Here, you can learn about Norwegian polar expeditions, the history of skiing over the past 4000 years and the Winter Olympics at Oslo and Lillehammer. At the top of the tower, soak in the 360-degree views of the city, with its fjords and forests. Maybe browse the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art on the harbour or taste local flavours at the Vulkan food hall. Perhaps explore the immense Akershus Castle and Fortress or check out some cool shops in the Grunerlokka district. In the evening, join your leader for a dinner of local flavours in the restaurant.

  • Day 7 Day 7: Bergen
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 7: Bergen

Today is a travel day, but itโ€™s one of the most impressive youโ€™ll experience! Start with an incredibly scenic train journey from Oslo to Flam, seeing Norwegian nature at its most magnificent. Stopping in Myrdal, youโ€™ll travel to the head of Aurlandsfjord on one of the worldโ€™s steepest stretches of train line, cutting through deep ravines, rivers, waterfalls, mountains and farms. In Flam youโ€™ll have lunch at a local brewery, then set sail through the breathtaking Naeroyfjord onboard an electric boat. Disembark in Gudvangen, then take a bus through the equally striking Naeroydalen on route to Voss. Stop for dinner in Voss before catching a final train to Bergen.

  • Day 8 Day 8: Bergen
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 8: Bergen

After breakfast, ride the Floibanen funicular on Mount Floyen. Taking you to 1,050 feet above the city in just seven minutes, it offers a bird eye prospective of the town and vistas of the deep blues of the sea. Those who want to get active can also continue following its multiple hiking trails, or you can choose to return to town. Youโ€™ll have free time in the afternoon to explore however you like. Perhaps visit World Heritage Bryggen area and wander through the reconstructed medieval homes and warehouses, visit the beautifully preserved wooden Hanseatic Museum (a former trade building) or explore the old Hanseatic port area โ€“ the Hanseatic merchant confederation dominated Baltic maritime trade for 400 years from the 15th century. Tonight, join your group for a final dinner at a local restaurant.

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm
