After a short ride on the subway, enjoy a stroll through Nishiki Market

The shopping arcade locally known as "Kyotoโ€™s Kitchen" has been around for hundreds of years, and recently it has become a very popular place to visit and try interesting food and snacks. The shop owners are inviting and some even offer free samples. Try some of the delicious items on display here!

Enjoy the picturesque streets of the famous entertainment district of Gion and learn about traditional Kyoto architecture and the Geisha. With some luck you can catch a glimpse of the Geisha as they walk between tea-houses.

Nearby we can find Yasaka Shrine, also known as Gion shrine.

Our guide will explain about the Shinto religion, and the importance of the shrine and its yearly festival. After taking a lunch break, walk toward Kiyomizu Temple via Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka streets. Have a good look of local souvenirs and stop by at a local green tea cafe if you like.

Before reaching the temple, you can enjoy the small streets leading up to it and browse through shops selling antiques and souvenirs. This area is especially famous for its pottery. In Kiyomizu, hear the history of Niomon Gate, The Main Stage, Otowa no Taki Waterfall. Enjoy cherry blossom in spring and red leaves in autumn.

The tour will end here. Explore the area further on own or walk back to Gion area with guide.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Private Tour Of Kyoto - Kinkakuji, Private Japanese Tea Ceremony And Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 3: Private Tour Of Kyoto - Kinkakuji, Private Japanese Tea Ceremony And Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

Meet your English speaking guide at 9am and start your day.

Visit Kinkaku-ji Temple (the famous โ€œGolden Pavilionโ€) โ€“  Originally the retirement home of an Ashikaga Shogun, Kinkaku-ji was transformed into a Rinzai Zen temple upon his death in 1408.  It has burned down many times in its history, most recently in 1950, when it was burned down by a deranged monk.  It was rebuilt in 1955.  Each floor of the three-story building represents a different style of architecture.  The first floor is built in the Shinden style from the Heian Period.  The second floor is built in the Bukke style used in samurai residences.  The third floor is built in the style of a Chinese Zen Hall.  It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Walk to a Japanese house where you take a private lesson of Japanese Tea Ceremony.

Later, take taxi to Arashiyama area and visit the following sites:

Bamboo Groves โ€“ Located in Arashiyama behind the Tenryuji Temple this peaceful grove of large bamboo is a wonderful place for a quiet walk or bicycle ride.  The sound of the bamboo stalks swaying back and forth in a gentle breeze is very pleasant.  Local artisans continue to make baskets, cups, boxes, and mats from the bamboo.

Monkey Park Iwatayama - Located in Arashiyama southwest of the Togetsukyo Bridge, this animal park features over 100 monkeys roaming freely.  It has some nice views of Kyoto.

After exploring the Arashiyama area, take local train and taxi back to hotel and end your day.

Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine โ€“ This Shinto shrine is the head shrine of Inari, the god of rice and of businessmen/merchants, often featuring a fox as the messenger.  The shrine includes thousands of red tori arches donated by businessmen.  There are over 30,000 smaller shrines throughout Japan.

Today, afternoon is free at leisure.

  • Day 5 Day 5: Private Tour Of Nara
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5: Private Tour Of Nara

Meet your guide at your hotel at 9am and take train to Nara. From Nara station take a short walk to Kofukuji Temple, one of Naraโ€™s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Kofukuji has a long history going back to the time that Nara (then known as Heijo-kyo) was as the capital of Japan. It was once one of the Seven Great Temples of Japan and now is the head of the Hosso sect of Buddhism. Several of the shrine buildings are designated National Treasures. Around here is where youโ€™ll start seeing the famous deer wandering around or laying under trees.

Then youโ€™ll visit one of two Japanese Gardens neighboring Kofukuji, Yoshikien or Isuien. Despite being in a relatively populated area, these gardens are a peaceful oasis to refresh the mind on a busy day.

After the gardens you will visit Todaiji Temple, arguably the most famous site on todayโ€™s tour. Founded in 728 and opened in 752, this temple has long been a major Buddhist temple in Japan and is another of Naraโ€™s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Daibutsu-den, one of the temple buildings and the largest wooden structure in the world, houses the largest of Japanโ€™s three Great Buddha Statues and the largest bronze Buddha status in the world. At 15 meters (49 feet) tall, this statue is an incredible sight to see.

At lunchtime you can choose a local restaurant in the area to have a bite to eat and walk through Nara Park, the central roaming area for Naraโ€™s famous deer. You can buy special crackers to feed the deer from stands scattered around the park.

Finally, you will visit Kasuga Taisha Grand Shrine, known not only for its historical and cultural importance but for its photogenic architecture and setting. It was built in 768, and is another of Naraโ€™s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The numerous lanterns lining the shrineโ€™s paths, which number in the thousands, are lit all at once twice a year; once in February for the last day of winter, or Setsubun, and once in August for the Obon Festival.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Private Tour Of Osaka
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6: Private Tour Of Osaka

Start your tour at 9am by taking train to Osaka Castle.  Built in the late 1500โ€™s, it was (at the time) the largest castle in Japan. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a prominent historical figure, intended for Osaka Castle to become political center of a newly unified country, but unfortunately for the Toyotomi family their rule was ended by the Tokugawa family in the early 1600โ€™s.

Next, visit Tsuruhashi, home to Osakaโ€™s largest Korean population and Korea Town.  Explore the local markets and shops, and enjoy a Korean lunch.

In the evening visit the Namba and Dotonbori River areas. The extensive shopping and nightlife area has many distinct districts, including Kuromon Food Market and Sennichimae Doguyasuji Street.  There is even a small shrine nestled among the crowds and neon signs, Hozenji Temple.  You will have no shortage of thngs to do here. End your tour in the evening at your hotel.
