Itinerary of your trip Extremadura (On E-Bikes) Guided Cycling Tour

  • Day 1 Fairytale Segovia
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Fairytale Segovia

Individual arrival in Madrid, where your tour guide will be waiting for you at the airport at around 16:00 (subject to change) and will take you to Segovia (95 km). In the late afternoon you will reach the old royal city of Segovia. In the Middle Ages, Segovia became rich through the wool trade! Twenty Romanesque churches from the 12th and 13th centuries, numerous noble houses and Renaissance palaces in the Mudejar style still reflect the wealth of this period today. The late Gothic cathedral is the last representative of its style. Only begun in 1525, it once again reflected all the wealth of an era that had long since passed. A veritable symphony of angular porches and towers. Only the Alcazar at the other end of the old town is more playful. It sits enthroned on a rocky promontory like the prow of a ship above the confluence of the Eresma and Clamores rivers. With its many slate-roofed turrets and battlements, it has nothing in common with the other austere castles of Castile.

In the evening, take a stroll through this fairytale town to a romantic restaurant on the townโ€™s most beautiful square. Here you will spend the first evening of your trip together. Overnight stay at the Plaza Acueducto Hotel****, Segovia.

  • Day 2 Segovia &Amp; Avila - Middle Age As In A Picture Book - Bicycle: 48 Km, Easy Stage
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Segovia &Amp; Avila - Middle Age As In A Picture Book - Bicycle: 48 Km, Easy Stage

When you step out of the hotel after breakfast, Segoviaโ€™s largest monument is right in front of you. The over 700 m long ancient Roman aqueduct (World Heritage Site) dates back to the 1st/2nd century AD, when Segovia was already an important settlement at the intersection of two important Roman military roads. Until the 1970s (!), it supplied the city with water from the Rรญo Frรญo, over 18 km away. The simple elegance of the building bears witness to the skill of the Roman engineers.

The day begins with a tour of the UNESCO-protected old town. This is followed by a transfer (45 km) to the cycle start in the solitude of the Castilian plateau. From here we cycle towards รvila, the highest provincial town in Spain. รvilaโ€™s "skyline" of church spires, gables and roofs looks monumental even from a distance. The three-meter-thick city wall with its 88 towers appears as unreal as a mirage in the lonely Castilian steppe. Since the 11th century, this wall has constricted รvila into a hermetic fortress - a stone monument to the Reconquista, the Christian reconquest of Spain (World Heritage Site). The city seems to have sunk into a centuries-long slumber, almost as if the walls could still block out the spirit of the times and any change! Of course we also spend the night here in historical style! Either in the 4-star Parador, an old convent building, or in the noble palace Palacio de los Velada in the middle of the old town (dinner).

  • Day 3 To The Sierra De Gredos Nature Park - Bicycle: 45 Km, Easy Stage
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

To The Sierra De Gredos Nature Park - Bicycle: 45 Km, Easy Stage

At the gates of รvila, you get on your bikes after a 1.5-hour guided tour of the city. The cycle route first leads through a park-like river valley out of the city and into the rural foothills of the Sierra de Gredos. You cycle through small villages and hamlets - mostly relatively flat - with views of the mountains of the Sierra, which are often still covered in snow in spring. Our stage destination, the Parador de Gredos, lies at an altitude of almost 1,600 meters. For this reason, the last few kilometers into the rugged mountains are covered in an accompanying bus (32 km). The Sierra de Gredos is a protected natural park and home to such rare animals as the Iberian ibex and the imperial eagle, as well as black vultures and griffon vultures.

The Parador de Gredos was the first accommodation of the newly founded state hotel chain "Paradores" in 1928. Before that, there was only a small royal hunting lodge on this site. The founding of the Paradores chain had several objectives: First and foremost, it was to serve the preservation of the national historical heritage: A great many impressive and historically significant buildings throughout the country could be saved from decay and preserved through this tourist use. In addition, these high-quality accommodations should attract guests to areas with little tourism and less economic power, and should lead Spainโ€™s image away from mass tourism on the beaches towards more sustainable cultural and nature tourism. Dinner and overnight stay at the Parador de Gredos*** / Sierra de Gredos.

  • Day 4 From Castilia To Extremadura - Cycle: 57 Km, Medium Stage
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

From Castilia To Extremadura - Cycle: 57 Km, Medium Stage

With views of mountain peaks over 2,000 m high, you set off in the morning directly from your hotel and follow breathtaking mountain roads and tracks. The mountain slopes are covered in chestnut and oak forests and an old Roman road leads right through this mountain solitude. What follows is probably the most strenuous stage of the journey up to a pass. Here you will particularly appreciate the pedal assistance of your e-bike! Before the lunch break, however, you can look forward to an almost 20 km long downhill section with fantastic panoramic views!

We leave Castile and reach the south side of the Sierra de Gredos in the green valley of the Rรญo Tiรฉtar, which is already part of Extremadura. The landscape becomes gentler and the climate milder. In the valley, our mountain road becomes a dual carriageway, which is why we bridge the last 50 kilometers to our overnight destination with a transfer. We spend the night in the pretty little town of Jarandilla de la Vera, where we are once again accommodated in a historic Parador hotel: The Jarandilla Palace, which was built in the 15th century, was once home to Charles V for a few months after his abdication. The German emperor spent the last two years of his life in a monastery in this region. It was probably the more pleasant climate, which was good for his gout-ridden body, that prompted him to flee the more humid north here. Dinner and overnight stay at the Parador de Jarandilla****.

  • Day 5 In The Monfrague National Park - Cycle: 50 (Or 57) Km, Medium Stage
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

In The Monfrague National Park - Cycle: 50 (Or 57) Km, Medium Stage

Today you cycle through the green, fertile valley of the Rรญo Tietรกr in the morning. Before we reach the Monfragรผe National Park, the landscape slowly changes. Stone and cork oak meadows - the so-called dehesas - accompany our route. The dehesa is the typical - and aesthetically very appealing - landscape form of Extremadura. Every now and then you can spot a few black (fighting) bulls on the pastures.

A highlight of the trip is the landscape of the Monfragรผe National Park: this impassable terrain with its many caves and hiding places was already inhabited in prehistoric times, as evidenced by numerous rock carvings. The Romans called the area "Mons fragorum", wild, rugged mountains. Today it is home to Europeโ€™s largest variety of birds. With a bit of luck, you can spot various species of vultures, eagles, cranes and storks in the park. One of the largest birds is the black-feathered black vulture. Thanks to traditional cattle herding and extensive livestock farming, the balance between man and nature has been largely preserved here for centuries. Dinner and overnight stay at the Hospederรญa de Monfragรผe****.

  • Day 6 To The Town Of Conquistadores - Bicycle: 53 Km, Easy Stage
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

To The Town Of Conquistadores - Bicycle: 53 Km, Easy Stage

On the way south from the Monfragรผe National Park, the countryside seems particularly lonely and barren. Dehesa pastures accompany us today on the longest cycling stage of the trip. In a small village halfway along the route, you stop for lunch in a quaint little bar. The cycle route ends in the village square of a small town, where you can order a "cafรฉ con leche" or "cafรฉ solo" and watch the tranquil hustle and bustle in this lonely, rural region before transferring to your hotel (23 km). Your destination today is the small town of Trujillo, which seems romantically sleepy and completely insignificant. Nevertheless, this place had far-reaching, world-historical significance! Trujillo was already known to the Alexandrian geographer Ptolemy in the 2nd century, but the big moment came with the discovery of the New World: many famous conquistadors came from this provincial town. Their thirst for adventure and daring (and no inhibitions about using a sword) drove the conquest of the New World for Spain. The most famous of them was Pizarro, whose bronze effigy dominates the Plaza Mayor today. He conquered and destroyed the huge empire of the Incas in South America! Almost all the venerable palaces in the old town bear the names of famous explorers and conquerors. This evening is at leisure (no dinner included). Just a few steps from the hotel on the main square you will find a large selection of lively bars and restaurants. 1st overnight stay in the historic Hotel Palacio de Santa Marta****, Trujillo.

  • Day 7 World Cultural Heritage Caceres - Cycle 46 Km, Easy Stage
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

World Cultural Heritage Caceres - Cycle 46 Km, Easy Stage

From tranquil Trujillo, you cycle towards the provincial capital of Cรกceres on the last day of cycling. After Segovia and รvila, Cรกceres is the 3rd World Heritage Site on this tour! Once again, you will experience this wonderful, slightly hilly Dehesa landscape and rest at an idyllic lake, which is a waterfowl paradise (transfer to cycle start: 12 km). The city tour of Cรกceres begins at the venerable city walls on the Plaza del General Mola, which is decorated with arcades and coats of arms. Under the Moors, the city was called Qazris and even today you can still imagine a mounted warrior of the Reconquista storming through one of the city gates in the historic ensemble of buildings. It is not churches but palaces that give the city a very special touch. The Plaza des Generals is the vestibule of the city and after passing through the wide-span city gate Arco de la Estrella, you reach a veritable ballroom in the Plaza de Santa Maria. Surrounded by palaces and towers from the 15th and 16th centuries, the square is one of the most impressive in Spain. Similar to San Gimignano in Tuscany, the casas have mighty towers that try to outdo each other as symbols of aristocratic prestige. The return journey to Trujillo in the afternoon is comfortably covered by coach (46 km). Final dinner in the old town and 2nd overnight stay in the Hotel Palacio de Santa Marta****.

  • Day 8 Departure To Madrid
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Departure To Madrid

The tour ends after breakfast. Your tour guides will drive you back to Madrid in the morning. The drive to the airport is 270 km long and takes approx. 3 hours.

For this reason, we ask you not to book your return flight too early (not before 14:30).

      Program subject to change.
