This is where the emperors once prayed to the Sons of Heaven once a year for a good and bountiful harvest.       You start the day today on the historic Tiananmen Square, from where you can see the Imperial Palace, the so-called "Forbidden City" (UNESCO World Heritage Site) (exterior tour). Then itโ€™s up to Coal Hill, which offers a fantastic view over the sea of houses in the Forbidden City. The tour continues to the Great Wall (UNESCO World Heritage Site), probably the longest building in the world. You will experience this masterpiece in a relaxed and pleasantly peaceful atmosphere at sunset, when most tourists have already returned to Beijing. Stroll along the wall and enjoy the atmosphere!       You start the day with a visit to the imperial gardens: the new Summer Palace. You then stroll through the old residential areas, the hutongs. The narrow alleyways of the old town are typical of old Beijing. In the afternoon, you can sit back and relax. You will travel in a modern 2nd class high-speed train to Xian, the next ancient imperial city on your journey, where you will spend the next two nights. (F/M)

      After breakfast, you will discover the modern and traditional metropolis. The old city wall with a length of almost 12 kilometers and its massive watchtowers looks mighty. Take a walk over this imperial bulwark! In the lively city center, the impressive Bell Tower and Drum Tower still bear witness to Chinaโ€™s past. Also impressive are the grounds of the Great Mosque with its extensive gardens and the small Wild Goose Pagoda. During the evening stroll through the alleys of the old town and the night market, your senses are challenged: There is a smell from the various cookshops and the colorful stalls sell souvenirs and useful utensils.       In the morning you will browse through one of the local markets and get an insight into the daily life of the local people of Xian. Afterwards, the world-famous Terracotta Army (UNESCO World Heritage Site) awaits. For more than 2,000 years it lay underground until 1974, when farmers accidentally uncovered the first parts of the huge complex. The proud looks of the lovingly restored warriors will make you believe that they are still watching over their emperor. The afternoon is at your leisure. In the evening, you will travel by overnight train in a comfortable 4-bed compartment (soft sleeper) to Shanghai. (F)
