  • Day 1 Day 1: Arrival In Kathmandu & Transfer To Hotel.

      On arrival at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be met by a representative from Sherpa Expedition and Trekking and taken to your respective hotels in Thamel followed by a briefing about your Upper Dolpo Trek. 

  • Day 2 Day 2: Sightseeing Around Kathmandu Valley And Trip Preparation.

      Today we will spend sightseeing in the Kathmandu Valley with our guide. We will visit Pashupatinath, which is considered the holiest Hindu temple in Nepal and a place where pilgrims worship Lord Shiva (situated on the banks of the holy Bagmati River); Bouddhanath, a Buddhist temple known as โ€˜Little Tibetโ€™ and then on to Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple). After leaving Swayambhunath we head to Kathmanduโ€™s famous Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site opposite the former royal palace.

      Today we will fly to Nepalgunj and stop for a meal break. Nepalgunj is situated on the plains in the southwestern part of Nepal and is known as one of the hottest places in Nepal. We will visit Bageshowri Temple, significantly important to Hindus. 

  • Day 4 Day 4: Fly To Jhupal (2,320M) & Trek To Dunai (2,150M) Duration 3-4 Hours.

      In the morning we take our flight to Jhupal in Dolpo and after arrival has a short drive to Dunai where we stay the night. Dunai is a major town in the district and has markets and shops to wander around in the afternoon.

  • Day 5 Day 5: Trek To Chhepka (2838M) Duration 6-7 Hours.

      This morning we head down to the Thuli Bheri River and then cross a suspension bridge that will take us to the entrance of Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepalโ€™s largest National Park with an area of 3,555 square kilometers. We continue on the trail following the Suli Khola (river) and can see the might Dhaulagiri Range in the distance. The trail heads through pine, spruce, fir, juniper, Cyprus and bamboo forests. We finally arrive at Chhepka where we will set up camp for the night.

      Today we head through a forest and follow an undulating trail where we may come across merchants transporting their goods by mule and Dzopas (a cross between a yak and cow). We then pass through Reecho and Chunuwar villages. At Chunuwar there is a traditional Tibetan doctor at the local Amchi Hospital who has a background in Tibetan medicine. You may wish to pay a visit and be treated to a natural herb treatment. We will camp here overnight.

      Today we have a steep climb to Phoksundo Lake. Along the way, we can see Nepalโ€™s highest waterfall at 107 meters high. We will then descend to Ringmo Village a quaint place where the people here practice the Bonpo religion, closely related to, but older than Buddhism. The religion was founded by Buddha Lonpa Shanrab Miwo. Dolpo is said to be the home of the former Bon Kingdom called Zhang. We will set up camp here tonight near the lake.

      Today we can relax and enjoy the quiet while sitting around the lake and take in the delightful views of the lake and nearby peaks, such as Kagmara. We can also wander around the nearby Ringmo Village.

      Today we enter the restricted area of Upper Dolpo and follow the trail made famous by the movie โ€˜Caravanโ€™. The trail is a popular trading route for the people of Dolpo and Tibetans. We then head down through a valley and enjoy views of Kanjirowa Himal (6612m) on the trail.  We will soon arrive at Thaneba or Lakeside camp where we will establish our camp for the night.

      Today the trail passes through some narrow rock walls and across several rivers before arriving at our overnight campsite. At this higher altitude we must be aware of the possibility of altitude sickness, hence the need to move in steps as we head higher.

  • Day 11 Day 11: Trek To Shey Gompa (4320M) Duration 7-8 Hours.

      This morning we will head to Kang La Pas (5350m), also referred to as Ngadra La Pass. We will head through this snow-covered pass and then descend to Shey Gompa that has an 11th century Gompa (temple). This is also the spiritual heart of Dolpo. Pilgrims visit this Gompa to make Kora (a clockwise circuit) of Crystal Monastery. We will camp here overnight.

      This is a beautiful place for a rest day in this mountainous region, in complete accord with nature and relaxing with the local monks chanting. We will take a tour of Shey Monastery also known as Crystal Monastery. This is the area described by Peter Matthiessen in his classic novel โ€œThe Snow Leopardโ€. We will camp here overnight.

      Today we cross the Shey La Pass (approx. 5000m) from where we have vast views of the Tibetan plateau. In the east, we can see Mustang. Descending from the pass we head down to the pastures of Namgung where we will set up our camp for the night.

      Our day begins by ascending to 4700 meters before head down a steep slope to the village of Saldang situated on a plateau above Nam Khong Nala, the biggest village in the lower Dolpo area. It is a thriving village is prosperous due to agriculture and its location on the trade route to Tibet.

      Our trail today takes us along the Nang Chu River and along the way we pass the Nangdo river. We continue on until we reach Rakyo where we stay at the night.

      Today we follow the trail back in the direction of Dachun Khola and then on to High camp. where we stay overnight.

      After leaving High Camp we follow the trail for Six to Seven hours alongside the Jyangla Khola to reach Tokyu where we stop for the night. It is not uncommon along the trail to see yak and mules transporting goods from Tibet.

  • Day 18 Day 18: Trek From Tokyu Gaon To Dho Tarap (4,040M) Duration 2 Hours.

      Our trail today descends to Tarap Chu located in a large green valley scattered with many small yaks and sheep herderโ€™s huts. The trail continues until we reach Dho Tarap where we stay the night. The people here are a mix of Tibetan and Magar castes.

  • Day 19 Day 19: Trek From Dho Tarap To Nawarpani (3470M) Duration 6-7 Hours.

      Our trek today is about six to seven hours through the valley and then through a more confined gorge with sparse vegetation. This area is home to Blue Sheep and other wild animals. We continue along the trail until we reach the junction of the Tarap Chu and Nawarpani where we stay the night.

      A four to five-hour trek today takes us through the Jeep Road. We continue along the trail until we reach Laina Odart. It is here that we will camp for the night.

      A four to five-hour trek today takes us through Lalberi Village and along the river to Tarakot. Tarakot has an ancient fort on the edge of the village. We continue along the trail until we reach Sandul Gomba situated where the Barbung Khola and Tarakot rivers intersect. It is here that we will camp for the night.

  • Day 22 Day 22: Trek From Tarakot To Dunai & Drive To Jhupal Duration 5-6 Hours.

      Our final day on the trail leads through several villages along a broader trail over some hills and through valleys heading to the Thulo Bheri River until we reach Dunai. If time permits we will stop here for lunch and then take a jeep to Jhupal where we will spend out last night in the Dolpo region and celebrate our fascinating journey in this spectacular Dolpo region.

  • Day 23 Day 23: Fly From Jhupal To Kathmandu Via Nepalgunj & Transfer To Hotel.

      Today we have two flights ahead of us, firstly a very short flight to Nepalgunj and then on to Kathmandu. On reaching Kathmandu we will take you to your respective hotels.
