Itinerary of your trip Sweden’S Wonderful Cities And Landscapes

  • Day 1 Day 1: Stockholm - Uppsala
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 1: Stockholm - Uppsala

Individual arrival in Stockholm. The first leg of the journey takes you from Arlanda Airport to the university city of Uppsala. The impressive Gothic cathedral can be seen from afar. It took 50 years to build. With a good 200,000 inhabitants, Uppsala is the fourth largest city in Sweden. "Upp sala" means "upper market" - the market square to the north of the capital. The city is criss-crossed by small waterways and many green spaces. Uppsala has been a university city since 1477 and is characterized by its very young population. Other sights include the huge Gamla Uppsala burial complex, which is located 4 km outside the city and comprises around 300 mounds. The most famous are certainly the three large burial mounds in which famous Viking kings are said to lie. Another highlight is Uppsala Castle, which was built in the 16th century by King Gustav Wasa. The massive, pink-colored building houses the Uppsala Art Museum in the south wing, where exhibitions on the last 500 years of art history are shown. Below the castle wing is the Botanical Garden, where you can admire over 10,000 plant species. A special feature is the tropical house with its own rainforest. One night in the Elite Hotel Academia (middle class). Approx. 40 km/travel time approx. 30 minutes.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Uppsala - Sundsvall
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 2: Uppsala - Sundsvall

From Svealand, which gave Sweden its name (Land of the Sveas - Svea Rike = Sverige), we head to the largest of the three parts of the country, Norrland. The vast land of the north begins in Gavle, as around 90% of the Swedish population lives south of Gavle. Stockholm is also geographically part of southern Sweden. The railroad museum in Gavle is well worth a visit. Without the railroad, Norrland and Lapland could not have been developed so easily. Follow the E4 or the old route of the Europastrasse parallel to the Baltic coast to Sundsvall. We recommend driving mainly on the old road sections, as they give you a better impression of the region. The central point and main attraction of Sundsvall is the market square Stora Torget. From the harbor, the pedestrian zone leads past old burgher houses built of red bricks. There are many shops, cafés and hotels here. Particularly worth seeing is the Hotel Knaust from 1888 and the Herbergska Huset in neo-Gothic style from 1890, which belonged to a wealthy industrialist. Visitors can enjoy a very beautiful view from Sundsvall’s local hill, Norra Berget, which is 155 meters high and also forms the town park. The hill is also home to an open-air museum and a craft and maritime museum. The museums are well worth a visit and provide a cultural and historical insight into people’s lives from the Stone Age to the present day. One night in the Elite Hotel Knaust (middle class). Approx. 325 km/driving time approx. 5 hours (breakfast).

  • Day 3 Day 3: Sundsvall - Lake Siljan
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 3: Sundsvall - Lake Siljan

While Sundsvall stands for the urban region of Norrland, country roads and the wild nature of Lapland characterize the route to Mora on Lake Siljan. The different landscapes of your round trip form a magnificent kaleidoscope of Sweden! As you drive through Halsningland, you will come across the special Halsingland farms again and again, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In Orsa Finnmark, the particularly dense forests are home to Sweden’s largest Baren tribe. Mora, with its 20,000 inhabitants, is beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Siljan. On the first Sunday in March, Mora is briefly the center of Sweden as the finish line of the 90 km long Vasalauf. The Zorn Museum is also worth a visit. The famous painter Anders Zorn was not only born here in Mora, but also spent most of his life in the small town until his death. Anders Zorn died in 1920 at the age of 60. He bequeathed his entire estate to the Swedish state with the proviso that a museum be established. Not only his own works are on display here, but also his impressive collection of international art. 2 nights at the Mora Hotel & Spa (middle class) on Lake Siljan. Approx. 275 km/driving time approx. 3.5 hours (breakfast).

  • Day 4 Day 4: Around Lake Siljan
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 4: Around Lake Siljan

Look forward to a tour around Lake Siljan. On the north side is the small village of Nusnas, which is famous for its craftsmen, as this is where the famous, original red Dala horses are carved and made. They are a true symbol of Sweden! The well-known traditional costumes, the midsummer tree and the typical Swedish paintings (Carl Larsson, Anders Zorn) as well as the Falun red also come from the region. This is why it is known as the heart of Sweden. Via Rattvik you reach the picturesque village of Tallberg, which embodies a kind of Bullerbu and the red house facades in particular exude an incredible charm. On the south side you pass Leksand and the villages of Siljansnas and Gesunda before reaching Mora again via the island of Solleron. Approx. 125 km (breakfast).

  • Day 5 Day 5: Lake Siljan - Orebro
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5: Lake Siljan - Orebro

The route takes you through the southernmost wilderness of Sweden through the province of Varmland to the crispbread town of Filipstad and to Orebro. The town’s landmark is Orebro Castle. The extensive lake areas in the immediate vicinity were used as locations in several films by Inga Lindstrom and made the region around the lakes Hjalmaren and Malaren famous. On the banks of the river Svartan in the center of Orebro is the open-air museum Wadkoping with historic wooden houses and farms. The town street runs right through the middle, lined with houses on both sides. On one side are low, red-painted buildings from the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries, on the other side of the street you will see buildings built after the great fire of 1854. One night in the Elite City Hotel Orebro (middle class). Approx. 270 km/driving time approx. 3.5 hours (breakfast).

  • Day 6 Day 6: Orebro - Jonkoping
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 6: Orebro - Jonkoping

The day’s stage takes you to the Gota Canal and the fortified town of Karlsborg on Lake Vattern. The picturesque village of Hjo and the wooden church of Habo are on the way to Jonkoping. Habo church is one of the most unusual and beautiful churches in Sweden. It is made entirely of wood. That in itself is nothing special, as such churches are more common in Sweden. Inside, however, the church is spectacular: Magnificent paintings and ornate carvings can be seen everywhere. Even though the church dates back to 1723, almost everything is original. The day’s destination is the town of Jonkoping on the shores of Lake Vattern, which is one of the ten largest towns in the country with a population of 120,000. The provincial capital of Smaland is beautifully situated on the shores of the lake and offers a number of attractions, including theaters, art galleries and museums. 2 nights in the Elite Stora Hotellet (upper middle class). Approx. 245 km/approx. 3 hours (breakfast).

  • Day 7 Day 7: Astrid Lindgren’S Smaland
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 7: Astrid Lindgren’S Smaland

Travel to Vimmerby (approx. 120 km from Jonkoping), because this is where dreams come true! Meet Pippi Longstocking, Madita, Lotta from the Noisemaker Street, Karlsson from the Roof, the robber’s daughter Ronja, the brother Lowenherz and Michel from Lonneberga. Visit the museum and birthplace of Astrid Lindgren on the farm Nas. Astrid Anna Emilia Ericsson, who later became the world-famous author Astrid Lindgren, was born in Vimmerby. It was here that she climbed the lemonade tree and played in the woodshed. This is where her literary work originated. Visit Astrid Lindgren’s childhood home, take a look at the large experience exhibition about Astrid Lindgren’s life and her literary work. You also have the opportunity to visit Sweden’s most popular theme park, Astrid Lindgren’s World. An experience for all those who grew up with Astrid Lindgren’s stories! In Sweden’s largest open-air theater with many stages, specially written plays from the author’s work are performed every day. Alternatively, you can visit Eksjo (approx. 60 km from Jonkoping). Many towns call themselves "Sweden’s best preserved wooden town", but only a few actually are. The wooden town of Eksjo is, because the entire town center is a listed building! Stroll along the cobbled streets from the bridge over the river up to the church and get a feel for times gone by! Another attraction is the Store Mosse National Park (approx. 80 km from Jonkoping) in the northwest of Smaland. The peat layer of Sweden’s largest bog has been growing for around 5,000 years. The almost 8,000 hectare area of Store Mosse is very rich in birds. Some of the species that can be observed here are otherwise only found in the far north of Sweden. As they feed from November to March, it is said that even golden eagles and sea eagles can be seen here. In addition, moose, deer, foxes, badgers and weasels can be found in Store Mosse. The moor has been a national park since 1982. There are around 40 km of hiking trails. At least five kilometers of these paths and trails are even accessible for wheelchairs and baby carriages. The center of the national park is the "Naturum". Magnificent panoramic windows allow a view of the moor and Lake Kavsjon. The building hovers like a bridge over the moor. (Breakfast).

  • Day 8 Day 8: Jonkoping - Norrkoping
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 8: Jonkoping - Norrkoping

You leave Jonkoping on the panoramic highway E4 in the direction of Stockholm to Granna, the town of "Polkagrisar" candy canes. In the sun-drenched capital of the county, with its steep streets and colorful gardens, you have a magnificent view over Lake Vattern and the island of Visingso. It is worth taking a stroll through the charming old town, where most of the original wooden houses have been preserved. In the town you will find small stores, craftsmen, restaurants, cafés and the popular candy cane kitchens. You can also visit Visingso, at 25 km² the largest island in Sweden’s Lake Vattern. It takes about 25 minutes by boat from Granna to Visingso. Three ferries run between 5 a.m. and about 1 a.m.; during the day, especially in the high season, there is a 30-minute frequency between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Your journey continues on the tourist route of the old Imperial Road 1 along the shores of the lake to Vadstena. The old town is well worth a stroll. Continue to the Gota Canal town of Motala. Along the canal you will find a vintage car museum and the Gota Canal Museum. The route continues along the canal to the striking locks at Berg and Borensberg. The day’s destination is the former industrial town of Norrkoping. Norrkoping is located on the Baltic Sea ford Braviken on the Motala Canal and has around 100,000 inhabitants. Trade, seafaring and the textile industry dominated the town. Norrkoping has had city rights since 1384 and flourished particularly in the 17th century, when a paper factory, armories, clothing factories and a shipyard were established here. At that time, Norrkoping became the second largest town in the country. The textile industry dominated life in the town in the 19th century, when around 70% of all textiles in Sweden were produced here. This continued until the 1960s. Pompous administrative buildings and directors’ villas were also built during this period. Marvel at the imposing facades! The streetcar, which is a trademark of the city, catches the eye. Today, the city is home to state institutions such as the national weather service SMHI. One night in the Elite Grand Hotel Norrkoping (middle class). Approx. 200 km/driving time approx. 3-4 hours (breakfast).

  • Day 9 Day 9: Norrkoping - Eskilstuna
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 9: Norrkoping - Eskilstuna

The day’s stage takes you through Sormland, also known as Stockholm’s Countryside. The beautiful cultural landscape is characterized by many gardens, castles and parks. The Swedish nobility once resided here, close to the royal capital. You cross the Braviken ford by boat and visit the towns of Nykoping, Trosa and Mariefred with Gripsholm Castle. The rest of the day gives you a taste of Bullerbu. In the middle of Eskilstuna’s town center, you can visit craftsmen working in a craft environment from the mid-17th century. The so-called Rademacher smithies, Rademachersmedjorna, is the oldest surviving craft district in Sweden. The blacksmithing tradition was brought to Eskilstuna by German blacksmiths, among others. Today, the Rademacher smithies are both a museum and a cultural-historical site where the tradition of various small craft businesses is kept alive. Here you can watch coppersmiths, goldsmiths, cutlers and gilders at work. One night in the Elite Stadshotellet Eskilstuna (middle class). Approx. 225 km/driving time approx. 4 hours (breakfast).
