Ancient pueblos dot red-rock outcroppings across miles of prairie. Flagstaff: Make your way to Walnut Canyon National Monument. Among the remarkable geological formations of the canyon itself, the former homes of ancient inhabitants are easily evident. Along the trails you can imagine life within Walnut Canyon, while visiting actual pueblos and walking in the steps of those who came before. Phoenix: Venture down the scenic trails at Papago Park before sitting down to enjoy a tasty picnic. Choose how you wish to spend your afternoon, slowing it all down with a bit of retail therapy in downtown Sedona, or hopping on an optional jeep ride leading deep into the rocky red surroundings. There’s even the option to discover Arizona on the back of a bike, so gear up for a mountain bike trek if this morning’s walk has inspired you to stretch your legs and ask your Travel Director for trail suggestions. Today’s encounter with the centuries-old history and culture of the Sinagua and the Verde Valley Pueblos will leave you feeling enriched as you Dive Into Culture during your visit to the Tuzigoot National Monument. Explore the Tuzigoot Pueblo at your pace admiring how these distinctive homes were built over 1,400 years ago against the backdrop of the Verde River and Tavasci Marsh. You’ll embark on a self-guided exploration, learning about the community’s incredible trade connections reaching as far as the jungles of Central America. You’ll also see remnants of their rich culture at the Tuzigoot Museum, with its incredible collection of ceramics, textiles and tools. Your next stop is the infamous town of Jerome which was founded in 1876 as a mining town but soon became known as the Wickedest City in the West, at the time housing 37 bars, 13 bordellos, and four churches. Once its copper, gold and silver riches waned in the 1950s, it became a ghost town before being restored in the 1960s and revitalized as an arts community, a distinction it still holds today, reflected in its multiple art studios and galleries. This is the very best of the Old Wild West and you’ll enjoy some time to explore the nostalgia of this historic town before settling in for one of the area’s most scenic drives through the colorful rock formations of Oak Creek Canyon. Your self-guided visit to The Citadel, Nalakihu and the Wupatki Pueblo reveals centuries of rich trading and agricultural history, as well as their cultural and religious traditions. Leaving with an in-depth understanding of the ancient culture and history of the clans that emerged from here, you’ll continue to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument where a short stroll will take you across a field of cinders to the epic views of Bonito Lava flow and the surrounding volcanoes. There’s plenty more to see so you may choose to take the mile-long Lava Flow Trail to the base of Sunset Crater Volcano or the 1.6-mile Lenox Crater Trail offering a glimpse between towering ponderosas. Get a deeper perspective on how the earth opened a thousand years ago to form Sunset Crater volcano with its distinct rim of red and yellow cinders when you visit the Visitor Center where interactive exhibits feature everything you need to know about volcanoes and the powerful forces behind them. We return to Flagstaff for lunch at leisure, then Dive Into Culture at Walnut Canyon National Monument where the former homes of ancient Sinagua inhabitants stand to this day.
