To experience the full beauty of New Zealand’s oldest national park, lace up your hiking boots and go on a day hike on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Active volcanic craters, solidified lava flows and lakes that glow an unreal emerald green promise a spectacular trekking backdrop! Between cooled lava flows, you climb up to the Red Crater. The growing smell of sulphur is an impressive reminder that the crater is still active. You feed your camera with photos every second, because the view is almost too good to be true. It’s just a few minutes’ walk to Lake Mangamahoe, which offers a beautiful view of Mount Taranaki. Ready for mystical rainforests? Then the Kamahi Loop, also known as the "Goblin Forest", is just the thing for you. You almost expect a forest elf to appear at any moment among the moss-covered trees. At least it seems possible with all the mystical vibes. But enough exercise for today - let’s go to the beach! The Back Beach is only about 10 minutes from the city center and is an absolute beauty. How about a visit to Te Papa? The free national museum on the waterfront is definitely worth a visit. To top it off, treat yourself to a waffle from "The Little Waffle Shop" on Courtenay Place. You can see the lighthouse from afar: one step at a time, you walk towards your destination. Finally done - 250 steps later you are standing in front of the lighthouse. Enjoy the view, breathe in the salty air and then it’s on to Napier! The art deco town will make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time, as the buildings look like they were built in the 1930s! Be sure to check out the area around Emerson Street - the historic buildings here are particularly beautiful. Saving the best for last: Te Mata Peak is the perfect place to watch the sunset. At first glance, it looks like an ordinary beach, but there’s something special about it: millions of years ago, volcanoes were at work here. Wondering why so many people are digging holes in the sand? There are still hot volcanic rocks under the surface, which in turn provide warm water just a few centimetres below the sand. Ready to surface again? The perfect view over the offshore islands brings you back to the here and now, with the next destination already firmly in sight: the sandy beaches of Cathedral Cove. The natural rock arch that connects the two beaches rises majestically before you. Ready to step through? The fine sand between your toes, the bright blue water in front of you - simply perfect! Let’s head north! After all, the far north is still missing from your North Island bucket list! Get in your van and off you go. Did you know that you can see wild dolphins in the Bay of Islands? You won’t want to miss out on that. The best place to go is Paihia, a beautiful little town right on the coast. Clear water, a golden sandy beach and, with a bit of luck, a few dolphins frolicking in the water and jumping out of the waves again and again. A unique experience! And when you’re not looking out for porpoises, you can sink into the warm sand and simply enjoy doing nothing. Want to experience the Bay of Islands in all its glory? Then book a guided tour (optional, bookable on site). You will be fascinated by the numerous islands: the green of the islands, the white sandy beaches and the turquoise blue water. Today’s must-see: Cape Reinga! Take the wheel and head north along the coast. The further you drive, the more remote the landscape - it’s beautiful up here! How about a stopover at 90 Mile Beach? The beach, which despite its name is ’only’ 55 miles long, is the perfect spot for a lunch break with a sea view. Strengthened, we continue north. Next stop: the Te Paki Sand Dunes! Hire a board and surf (optional, payable locally), or would you prefer to jump straight into the sea from the dunes? Just a little later, you will see the bright white lighthouse, which marks the northernmost accessible point in New Zealand. While the tea water simmers away, you greet the morning with a short yoga session in front of your camper. You breathe in and out deeply, feel the warming rays of sunshine on your skin and are completely relaxed. You haven’t felt this free in a long time. Have you finished breakfast and stowed everything in the camper? Then you’re ready to get going! You roll down the windows, turn up the music and steer your camper from the campsite back onto the road. On the way towards Auckland, you make a short stop at Waipoua Forest, home to New Zealand’s largest tree.
