      Hiram Bingham Train

The Hiram Bingham Train is a luxury train service in Peru, specifically between the city of Cusco and the town of Aguas Calientes, located at the base of the ancient Incan citadel of Machu Picchu. The train is named after Hiram Bingham III, the American explorer who discovered Machu Picchu in 1911.

The Hiram Bingham Train is operated by PeruRail, which offers train services to various destinations in Peru. The train is considered one of the most luxurious trains in South America, with elegant carriages decorated in the style of the 1920s Pullman carriages.

Passengers on the Hiram Bingham Train are treated to a gourmet dining experience, with brunch served on the outbound journey and dinner on the return journey. The train also has an observation car, where passengers can enjoy panoramic views of the Andes and the Urubamba River.

The Hiram Bingham Train is designed to provide a luxurious and unforgettable travel experience for passengers who want to explore the ancient Incan ruins of Machu Picchu in comfort and style. The journey takes around 3 hours each way, and passengers can explore Machu Picchu on a guided tour before returning to Cusco.

      Hiram Bingham III

Hiram Bingham III was an American archaeologist, historian, and politician best known for discovering the ancient Incan citadel of Machu Picchu in 1911. Bingham was born in Hawaii in 1875 and grew up in Connecticut. He attended Yale University, earning a degree in Latin American history and a Ph.D. in the same field.

In 1906, Bingham made his first trip to Peru as part of a Yale University expedition. He became fascinated by the ancient Incan civilization and continued to explore and document the ruins of Machu Picchu over the next several years.

In 1911, Bingham led an expedition to Machu Picchu and discovered the ancient ruins, which the Inca had abandoned over 400 years earlier. Binghamโ€™s discovery brought international attention to the site and helped to fuel a renewed interest in Incan history and culture.

Bingham continued to explore and document other Incan sites in Peru and published several books and articles on his findings. He also served as a US Senator from Connecticut from 1924 to 1933.

Binghamโ€™s legacy has been somewhat controversial, as some historians have criticized his methods and accused him of looting artifacts from Incan sites. However, he is still recognized as a pioneer in Andean archaeology, and his discovery of Machu Picchu remains one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century.
