Day 6: Flying Fox Watching And Safari In Kasanka Np

You explore the unique landscapes of Kasanka National Park. You will go on two half-day game drives in the park, accompanied by an additional local guide. At sunrise and sunset, you can experience the absolutely fascinating spectacle of the "Fruit Bat Migration" from wooden observation towers at various locations, when palm flying foxes swarm out from their roosting trees at dusk or fly back in at dawn. Every year from mid-October to the end of November, around 10 million palm fruit bats from the forests of the Congo arrive in Kasanka National Park and settle down for an unbridled feast in the swampy forest along the Musola River. Here, the purely vegetarian flying foxes devote themselves to a large meal of ripened fruit and berries such as mangoes, masuku and water berries. This is the worldโ€™s highest density of mammal biomass in one place and the largest known migration of mammals on our planet - even before the great wildebeest-zebra migration in Tanzania! Overnight stay as on the previous day.

There is plenty of time for extensive photography. The Luangwa Valley offers a little bit of everything: river landscapes, tree-covered savannahs, palm groves and the prospect of lots of exciting animal encounters. The density of animals near the river and on the tributaries of the Luangwa is incomparable: elephants, antelopes, giraffes, hippos, zebras, lions, leopards - they are all at home here.
