      Circumnavigation Of Spitsbergen 14ร—(F/M/A)

The days on board are determined by wind and weather. If the conditions allow it, the sails are set, otherwise the engine is used. The expedition leader determines the course of the day depending on the current ice conditions - flexibility is key! This allows you to react to wind, ice and exciting wildlife viewing opportunities at any time. Therefore, the landing sites described here are only examples of how the trip could go.

West Spitsbergen: The region is characterized by deep fjords, spectacular glacier abysses and a lot of history. Again and again you come across the remains of old whaling stations from the 17th century (e.g. in Smeerenburg or Tryghamna) or ruins of former Russian Pomor settlements from the 18th century. On the small island of Ytre Norskรธya you can still find many graves from the whaling era during a hike.

Exciting is a short hike to Alkhornet. Here at the bird cliff polar foxes are often seen searching the slopes for eggs and young birds. Reindeer also graze here frequently. In Forlandsundet, near Sarstangen, is a popular resting place for walruses, which can be observed at close range if you are lucky.

Along the north coast: the north is the habitat of polar bears and the rare ivory gulls and sightings are not unlikely in the region. Kittiwakes, black guillemots and guillemots raise their chicks on the bird cliffs. Worthwhile destinations in the north include Sorgfjord, where walruses are frequent, or Murchison Bay, on whose northern shore stretches a vast dry tundra, habitat to numerous reindeer. There are also the remains of an old Swedish research station to see. Once you reach the Hinlopen Strait, the views of the immense ice cap of Nordaustlandet, the massive front of the Brรฅsvell Glacier, or the semi-fossil whale skeletons along the beaches on Wilhelmรธya Island will impress you.

East Spitsbergen: The most spectacular section of the voyage is perhaps Heleysundet - a strait between the main island of Spitsbergen and the small Barentsรธya, which can only be passed against the current. If passage is not possible, a little further south you will cross Freeman Sound north of Edgeรธya. Barentsรธya and Edgeรธya offer many opportunities for short and longer hikes, e.g. to the beautiful Rosenbergdalen, where groups of reindeer almost always graze, or to Diskobukta. There, a large, noisy colony of kittiwakes inhabiting a gorge is impressive. Ancient whale skeletons lie on the elevated former beach lines far inland.

Southwest Spitsbergen: Finally, the journey leads to southern Spitsbergen. Two large fjords characterize the region. The more southern Hornsund with its labyrinth of side fjords and many spectacular glacier edges offers good chances of encountering polar bears or bearded seals. Rugged mountains and colorful geological formations frame the excursions in this fjord. You may have the opportunity to visit the Polish research station at Isbjรธrnhamna.

A bit further north lies Bellsund. Exciting geology contrasts here with the sad witnesses of whaling for the beluga (white whale) in the early 20th century.

Time permitting, on your return to Isfjord, visit the Russian settlement of Barentsburg, where coal is still mined. Finally, set course for Longyearbyen, where you expect to arrive on the evening of Day 15.

      14 nights on board.

  • Day 3 Journey Home 1ร—F
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Journey Home 1ร—F

In the morning disembarkation and individual journey home.
