The Valley of the Kings is one of ancient Egypt's top tourist destinations. Located on the west bank of the River Nile, the isolated valley is dominated by a great pyramid-shaped mountain. The area has been the site of royal burials for almost 4,000 years and includes the tombs of Seti I and II; Ramesses III, IV, VII, and IX; Siptah; Tausert-Setnakht; and Merenptah. You'll be able to visit three with your entry ticket, including the well-preserved tomb of Seti 1. The final resting places for these great pharaohs remain one of the most impressive sites to visit in the world. Further along, dominating the eastern bank, sits the 59-foot high (18 m) Colossi of Memnon—faceless effigies sitting on thrones that are the ruins of the entrance to the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III. We'll also visit the Karnak Temple Complex. At the heart of this site stands the colossal Precinct of Amun-Re, enclosing a sacred lake that priests used in purification ceremonies before performing rituals in the temple.

This exceptional museum, located in an impressive neoclassical building, opened its doors in 1902. At that time, it only contained about 12,000 pieces. Today, the museum owns the greatest collection of Egyptian archaeological history in the world. Among the objects you'll discover are rare statues, paintings, and funeral elements. Its mining history means excavations have unearthed unique collections of artifacts.OROptional full-day excursion: Masada and the Dead Sea (lunch included; approx. 11 hours total, including five hours round-trip travel). The ancient fortification of Masada sits on a plateau on the edge of the Judaean Desert overlooking the Dead Sea. The natural fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of the ancient kingdom of Israel. Herod the Great built two palaces on the mountain in the last century BC. Jewish zealots conquered the site in 68 AD at the beginning of the revolt against the Roman Empire. In 73 AD, the zealots fought back against a siege. They eventually lost, but their battle remains a modern symbol of the struggle for freedom. Join us for a full-day optional excursion to Petra (lunch included; approx. 10 hours total, including four hours round-trip travel). Petra is unquestionably one of the greatest marvels ever constructed and is considered one of Jordan's national treasures. Carved into the pink and red stone by the Nabataeans—an Arab people living in Jordan over 2000 years ago—Petra, meaning "rock" in Greek, was strategically located at the junction of the silk and spice trade routes. To enter the city, we will follow the "siq," a narrow gorge approximately one kilometer in length, delimited by sharp cliffs on either side—ending at Al Khazneh, the "Treasury." This Nabataean tomb has an impressive Hellenistic facade carved directly into the pink stone at the beginning of the 1st century. It is a masterpiece of refinement and symmetry, which on its own makes a visit to Petra worthwhile. You will also discover the Roman-style Nabataean theater carved into the rock over 2,000 years ago. We'll enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before returning to the ship in Aqaba.
