      Day 1: Drive To Hell Bourg

      Transfer from St. Denis to the mountaineering village of Hell Bourg in the heart of the Cirque de Salazie. The Cirque de Salazie is the rainiest of the three crater basins in the interior of the island, accordingly the vegetation is green and lush. You will stay in a cozy 3-star hotel.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Entering Cirque Du Mafate

      Day 2: Entering Cirque Du Mafate

      From Hell Bourg you drive to Le Belier, starting point of the first hiking stage in the Cirque du Mafate. Soon you will find yourself in a breathtaking, rugged mountain world and can enjoy magnificent views of the volcanic basin below you, of small settlements and steeply rising crater walls and peaks. After descending into the heart of the Cirque du Mafate, you will again climb a bit until you reach the hut of Grand Place on a hill.

      Day 3: From Grand Place To Roche Plate

      You cross the wildest and most pristine of the three cirques, which is still not accessible by road. Passing rustic settlements, you descend into the valley of the Rivière des Galets, follow the picturesque river and, after a steep climb, reach the settlement of Roche Plate, which looks like a balcony with a view.

      Day 4: From Roche Plate To Marla

      In the cool of the morning you hike slightly uphill and reach the Trois Roches, a beautiful resting place on the banks of the here deeply cut Rivière des Galets. Then you walk along the river valley through shady forests and in the face of mighty crater walls to a high plateau to the beautifully situated mountain hut of Marla, where you spend the next night.

      Day 5: Across The Col De Taibit To Cilaos

      The first stage of today leads steeply uphill to the pass Col de Taibit, there we can enjoy magnificent views: Behind us the magnificent mountains of Mafate, in front of us the cauldron of Cilaos. After a steep descent, which you can also shorten with a public bus, you finally reach the charming village of Cilaos. There you can again enjoy the comfort of a cozy 3-star hotel. Here your luggage is already waiting with fresh laundry.

      Day 6: Climb To Caverne Dufour

      In the morning you have enough time to stroll through the village and stock up on food. In the afternoon you will tackle the steep climb to the mountain hut Caverne Dufour. The higher you get, the more impressive the view of the Cirque de Cilaos and the steep crater walls. At the simple Caverne Dufour you prepare for a short night and the ascent to the highest mountain of Reunion.

  • Day 7 Day 7: Sunrise At Piton Des Neiges

      Day 7: Sunrise At Piton Des Neiges

      The ascent begins while it is still dark. Halfway up, the last bushes give way to the rubble of the volcano, which has been extinct for more than 20,000 years. After about 2 hours you will experience the sunrise on the 3,070 m high Piton des Neiges. Enjoy the 360 degree panoramic view. After breakfast long descent along the crater rim to the high alpine pastures of Plaine des Cafres. From there, with your main luggage already on board the vehicle, you will drive to Cambourg, where you will spend two nights at the beautifully located Lodge Diana Dea.

  • Day 9 Day 9: Drive To Piton De La Fournaise

      Day 9: Drive To Piton De La Fournaise

      Drive to the Plaine des Cafres. From there, the road winds higher and higher, the vegetation gradually becoming more and more sparse, until you reach the Plaine des Sables, where you are immersed in a seemingly unreal landscape on a sandy, volcanic plateau. Just below the huge caldera of Piton de la Fournaise, you will spend the night in the mountain hut Gite du Volcan. In the evening you can take a short walk to the crater rim, especially during full moon the atmosphere is fantastic.

  • Day 10 Day 10: Walk On The Volcano

      Day 10: Walk On The Volcano

      Descent into the caldera (2,150 m). Crossing of the crater floor. Ascent through lava to the massif of Volcan de la Fournaise (2,635 m) with bizarre lava formations and steaming craters. Return to the hut in the afternoon.

  • Day 11 Day 11: From Fournaise To The “Wild South”

      Day 11: From Fournaise To The “Wild South”

      Hike through the lunar landscape and the desert sea of sand. Descent into the beautiful valley of the Rivière Langevin. The changing vegetation is impressive: at 1,500 m, the transition from low shrubbery to increasingly dense rainforest begins. Finally you hike past pineapple and banana plantations to the waterfalls of Grand Galet. By bus to the coast to St. Gilles, here you will receive your luggage again. If this descent is too strenuous for you, you can also be picked up at the hut by the transfer and drive comfortably to St. Gilles.
