      Day 1: Drive To Hell Bourg

      Transfer from St. Denis to the mountaineering town of Hell Bourg in the heart of the Cirque de Salazie. The Cirque de Salazie is the rainiest of the three crater boilers in the interior of the island, and the vegetation is accordingly green and lush. You’re staying in a cozy hotel.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Drive To Le Belier

      Day 2: Drive To Le Belier

      From Hell Bourg you drive to Le Belier. This is the starting point of the first hiking stage in the Cirque de Mafate. Soon you will find yourself in a breathtaking, rugged mountain world. Here you will enjoy magnificent views of the volcanic basin below you, the small settlements, steeply rising crater walls and peaks. After the descent into the heart of the Cirque de Mafate, you will climb again until you reach the hut of Grand Place on a hill.

      Day 3: From Grand Place To Roche Plate

      You cross the wildest and most pristine of the three Cirques, which is still not accessible by road. Passing rustic settlements, you descend into the river valley of the Rivière des Galets. There you follow the picturesque river and reach the settlement of Roche Plate, which is situated as if on a panoramic balcony.

      Day 4: From Roche Plate To Marla

      In the cool of the morning you hike slightly uphill and reach the Trois Roches, a beautiful resting place on the banks of the here deeply cut Rivière des Galets. Then you will walk along the river valley through shady forests and in the face of mighty crater walls to a high plateau to the wonderfully situated mountain hut of Marla. There you will spend the next night.

      Day 5: Across The Col De Taibit To Cilaos

      From Marla, the trail leads you through a forest to the Col de Taibit at 2,081m. From here you have a beautiful view of the Cirque de Cilaos and for the first time the town of Cilaos. A long but leisurely descent follows. The river Bras Rouge shows you the way until you reach the beginning of the upcoming ascent to Cilaos. Through the alternating ascents and descents, you will pass through different levels of vegetation that will show you the diversity of endemic plant species in all its splendor.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Drive To Piton De La Fournaise

      Day 6: Drive To Piton De La Fournaise

      From Cilaos you drive via Bourg Murat to the Plaine des Cafres. From there, the road winds higher and higher. Gradually, the vegetation becomes more and more sparse until you reach the Plaine des Sables, where you enter a seemingly unreal landscape - on a sandy, volcanic plateau. Just below the huge caldera of Piton de la Fournaise, you will spend the night in the mountain hut Gite du Volcan. In the evening, you can take a short walk to the crater rim; the atmosphere is fantastic, especially during a full moon.

      Day 7: Hiking On The Volcano

      Descent into the caldera (2,150 m). Crossing of the crater floor. Ascent through lava to the massif of Volcan de la Fournaise (2,635 m) with bizarre lava formations and steaming craters.

  • Day 8 Day 8: From Fournaise To The Wild South

      Day 8: From Fournaise To The Wild South

      Hike through the lunar landscape and the desert sea of sand. Descent into the beautiful valley of the Rivière Langevin. The changing vegetation is impressive: at 1,500 m, the transition from low shrubbery to increasingly dense rainforest begins. Finally you hike past pineapple and banana plantations to the waterfalls of Grand Galet. By bus to the coast to St. Gilles - Here you will receive your luggage again. If the descent is too difficult for you, you can also take the bus from the hut to St. Gilles.
