Arrival In Bali, Transfer To The Hotel In Denpasar, Introduction To The Trip

Once we arrive in Bali, we are taken to our hotel. There we meet in a tropical ambience and look forward to the adventure that lies ahead of us. Depending on the time of arrival, we can still enjoy a touch of the Balinese exotic, perhaps the beach at Kuta Beach will entice us? We spend the night in a hotel near Denpasar and get to know each other over dinner (optional).

  • Day 3 Flight From Bali To Dili / East Timor, City Tour
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Flight From Bali To Dili / East Timor, City Tour

The excitement builds! The flight to Dili (included), the capital of "Timor Leste", as the country is usually called, takes around two hours. Once there, we first go to the hotel, but we are curious about this completely unnamed country. After a short break to relax, we explore the city with its numerous monuments from the civil war period at the end of the 20th century. Since its independence, first from Portugal and then from Indonesia, the population has grown proud of its desire for freedom, which is why we intensively follow in the footsteps of this rocky road to independence. Various memorials, museums, but also a weaversโ€™ cooperative and the lively Taibessi market for fruit and vegetables are on offer today. Then itโ€™s off to the Cristo Rei statue and, if thereโ€™s still time, a detour to Areia Branca beach could round off the day. Our first day in East Timor comes to an end with a variety of first impressions.

  • Day 4 Dili - Atauro Island
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Dili - Atauro Island

Today we take the boat to the offshore island of Atauro, a unique island in a dreamlike South Sea setting. We explore the main town of Vila on foot and settle down for lunch at Baryโ€™s Place, where we will also spend the night. In the afternoon, we go on another boat tour with the opportunity to discover the legendary underwater world of East Timor while snorkeling. Swimming and relaxing under palm trees, simply magical. Dinner again at Bary and certainly a fantastic starry sky under the palm trees.

  • Day 5 Atauro Island - Dili
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Atauro Island - Dili

We enjoy the morning on the idyllic island with swimming and snorkeling or a walk on our own, then we take the ferry back to Dili. Here we have time to inspect the city beyond the "highlights", namely pure East Timorese life.

  • Day 6 Dili - Seloi Lagoon - Aileu - Maublisse - Short Hike - Luktei Village - Hatobuiliko / Mt. Ramelau
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Dili - Seloi Lagoon - Aileu - Maublisse - Short Hike - Luktei Village - Hatobuiliko / Mt. Ramelau

Now itโ€™s time to really get going: we start our island exploration on East Timor with a trip to the Seloi lagoon with its surrounding rice fields and traditional houses. We then continue towards Maublisse, where we visit a traditional pousada. A short hike takes us to the hidden waterfall of Ersali Buti before we head for our destination for today, Hatobuilico, at an altitude of around 2000 meters above sea level, right next to the highest mountain in East Timor, Mt. Ramelau (2986 meters). At dinner, everyone can decide whether they want to venture up the mountain early the next morning or sleep in and go on a short excursion.

      (F/M/A)

  • Day 7 Hatobuilico / Mt. Ramelau Ascent Or Excursion To Blehitu Village - Dokomali Waterfall - Ainaro
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Hatobuilico / Mt. Ramelau Ascent Or Excursion To Blehitu Village - Dokomali Waterfall - Ainaro

For the sporty among us, today we have the opportunity to climb the highest mountain in East Timor. The ascent begins early in the morning at 3 a.m. and takes us almost 1000 meters uphill on wonderful paths through lush flora, for which we take 2-3 hours to enjoy the sunrise with the magnificent view over this fantastic island scenery, before descending again. (Walking time approx. 4-5 hours). Those who prefer a more relaxed approach have the option of taking a trip to the traditional village of Blehitu instead of the ascent. Afterwards, together again, we take a short hike to the Dokomali waterfall at the village of Lebolau with its traditional archaic wooden houses, where we enjoy a traditional lunch and get to know the villagers. It is hard to say goodbye, but we set off for our destination today, Ainaro, where we enjoy the sunset with delicious cocktails.

  • Day 8 Ainaro - Aitutu - Same
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Ainaro - Aitutu - Same

Today we drive south through the picturesque mountains via the village of Ainaro to Same, which was once the center of a Timorese kingdom. On the way, we are on the lookout for exciting encounters, as we realize time and again that we are almost the only tourists in this country, giving us the opportunity to experience the culture and everyday life in its purest form. We finally arrive in Same, where after lunch we explore the dilapidated old Portuguese colonial buildings, such as the former post office building, walk around the market and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the town. There will also be time to stroll around on your own, if you like.

      (F/M/A)

  • Day 9 Same - Betano - Wailakurini/Loihuno
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Same - Betano - Wailakurini/Loihuno

On the one hand, we dedicate todayโ€™s stage to the magnificent landscapes around and on the south coast of East Timor. On the other hand, we immerse ourselves in the history of World War II, in which East Timor was involved in the fighting between the Allies, represented by the Australians, and the Japanese. Some sites tell of the drastic events, e.g. the shipwreck at Betano or the Portuguese ruins. And we are always fascinated by the culture and villages of the locals with their characteristic house shapes, which are somewhat similar to those of Papua New Guinea, which is not far away. It really is a clash of very different worlds in these remote areas at the end of the world. Our destination lies to the north, back inland: Loihuno at the foot of the Mundo Perdido mountain, the "forgotten world", how fitting. The place hardly ever sees tourists, which makes our encounters all the more exciting. We watch our dinner being prepared: tukir, the traditional meat and rice dish, eaten from bamboo plates, will be delicious.

      (F/M/A)

  • Day 10 Loihuno - Ossu - Baucau
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Loihuno - Ossu - Baucau

In the morning, a short hike takes us to the Lekiraka cave, a hideout of the resistance fighters of the time. We continue our journey and drive along scenic roads past the Mundo Perdido via the village of Ossu to Baucau. On the way, we experience the variety of wild mountainous terrain, rice paddy crops and other caves used by the Japanese occupying forces. Baucau is located on the north coast and was the second largest Portuguese settlement in East Timor. We explore the town on foot and also have time to go our own way again.

      (F/M/A)

  • Day 11 Baucau - Tutuala/Lautem - Valu Beach - Hike
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Baucau - Tutuala/Lautem - Valu Beach - Hike

Today we travel from Baucau along the north coast to the outermost tip of the island in the east. On the way, we pass some rice farming villages and enjoy the spectacular view of the Mt. Matebian mountain range. Our destination is Valu Beach opposite Jaco Island in the village of Lautem, where we spend a relaxing time swimming and snorkeling. Before that, however, we go on a short hike to the Lenehara cave; if you like, you can also cover the distance in our vehicle. Our bungalow guesthouse is right on the beach. The temptation is great, but we canโ€™t swim to the South Sea island of Jaco directly opposite, a stoneโ€™s throw away, because the current doesnโ€™t allow it. For today, the view there in the evening sun is enough for us.

      (F/M/A)

  • Day 12 Valu Beach - Jaco Island - Com
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Valu Beach - Jaco Island - Com

After breakfast, we set sail on fishing boats to the beautiful island of Jaco. There we experience a real Robinson feeling! The dream beach invites you to relax and swim, but if you like, you can also venture into the islandโ€™s interior. We return to the main island for lunch and then continue our journey through the tropical mountain landscapes, past the lakes of Iralalaro and archaic-looking villages with their architectural eye-catchers. Along the way we come across ancient cemeteries and graves, then we cross the Nino Coni Santana National Park. Finally, we reach the fishing village of Com, where we may experience some "danced culture" after dinner.

      (F/M/A)

  • Day 13 Com - Baucau - Dili
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Com - Baucau - Dili

Our way back to the capital Dili leads via Baucau again, where we will have lunch. On our new route directly to Dili is Manatuto, where the remains of a Portuguese fort from the 16th century can still be seen. We visit the old church and continue via the village of Laleila, the birthplace of one of East Timorโ€™s first heads of state, Xanana Gusmao. We then reach Dili and have some free time before we devote ourselves to our last evening on this enchanting island.

      (F/M/A)

  • Day 14 Flight Dili - Denpasar/Bali
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Flight Dili - Denpasar/Bali

Today itโ€™s time to say goodbye to East Timor. What a fascinating world we have got to know. Early in the morning we are taken to the airport, check in and fly to the island of Bali (flight included), our last stop before our journey home. Once there, we enjoy a little Hindu culture or, if you like, the legendary Kuta Beach. Our farewell evening makes us wistful, and we look for a suitable restaurant (dinner optional).
