Cycling CPU Exclusively to self-guided tours our bikes come fitted with top of the range GPS navigation units. These biking computers have remarkable customisation capabilities and can easily be ported with all major biking software, such as Strava, RidewithGPS or Kamoot, for all fans of cycling data. Never fear if you are not technically minded, as weโ€™ve made them accessible to all riders. The device will be customised for you and we will upload the most accurate maps and routes. Furthermore, you will be well briefed on putting it to good use. You can download a free companion app and play around with its setup, download results of a dayโ€™s ride, or set yourself daily workout goals. Your Gifts A beautiful souvenir Grasshopper cycling jersey is yours to wear and take home. We also provide a Grasshopper drink bottle as an extra memento. Hopper App Our dedicated Grasshopper Self-guided Adventures app combines navigating technology with visual and audio descriptions of points of interest along your routes, and can be hosted on all Android and iOS devices. The app contains your detailed tour route, podcasts with background information on the regions you will pass through, plus an audio commentary describing points of interest along the way. It also provides dining suggestions along your routes as well in destination locations, with translated menu recommendations. Furthermore, it will provide a and voiced glossaries of common phrases and words, which you can use to find rapport with locals. On request we can provide iPads if you donโ€™t wish to use your own mobile device.

Accommodation

Great Sleeps We make use of the traditional Ryokan Inns on four nights of this tour, some with attached onsen (thermal hot spring) baths. These are atmospheric, family run guesthouses with, tatami matted floors, paper walls, futon beds, Yukata gowns and a traditional Japanese feast that awaits you at each one. We have selected these properties for their character, location and comfort. Note, double beds are not available in the Ryokanโ€™s as they are single futon mattresses on the floor.

      • Welcome to Kyoto! Today you can explore Japanโ€™s cultural epicenter of Japan on your own.  
      • Take your time during the day to get to Kyotoโ€™s key attractions including the mighty Imperial Palace and the shimmering Golden Pavilion set against a picturesque lake. 
      • Meet our self-guided tour representative in the late afternoon at your convenience for tour briefing, bike fitting and introducing our equipment.

  • Day 2 Kyoto - Explore By Bike

      • Embark on a fun riding adventure today around Kyoto  
      • Start along the river, heading north to Bamboo Forest - a must-visit for its serene beauty at certain times of the year the iconic cherry blossom gardens.  
      • Stop by Tenryuji Temple which is typical of the ancient architecture that has endured the passage of time. 
      • Soak in the beauty of renowned UNESCO favorite zen-style garden inside Roanji. 
      • Cycle to Kinkakuji

  • Day 3 Nara - Cycle Between Capitals

      Nara - Cycle Between Capitals

      • Pedal through the lush green of bamboo forests, corn crops and green tea plantations to Nara.  
      • Stop at a cyclist-friendly cafe and a viewing tower to see the vistas of the surrounding countryside. .  
      • Stay in a mixed Japanese โ€“ Western style hotel, conveniently located next to the main train station and within walking, biking or city bus distance of renowned Nara Park and neighboring Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji.

  • Day 4 Yoshino - Cycle Up To The Kii Mountain Range

      Yoshino - Cycle Up To The Kii Mountain Range

      • Ride through the remnants of the ancient city of Nara  
      • Ride among agriculture and small villages, then cycle uphill to Yoshino - a picturesque location set on a ridge with a collection of temples atop.  
      • Stay in Ryokan โ€“ a traditional Japanese Inn with signature tatami matting.  
      • Soak in thermal onsen  
      • A Japanese style dinner will be served today at your hotel

  • Day 5 Koyasan - Cycle To Mount Koya
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Koyasan - Cycle To Mount Koya

      • Start your day with a leisurely glide down the hill after breakfast. 
      • Cycle the route presenting a mix of undulations with some sharp little uphills at times.  
      • Opt for a challenge and ride up Japanโ€™s holiest mountain, climbing for 12km overall, or opt for the enjoyable and scenic train journey instead. Dinner will be served today at your hotel

  • Day 6 Wakayama - Descend To The Coast
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Wakayama - Descend To The Coast

      • Explore Koyasan  - the worldwide center of Shingon Buddhism by an early morning ride. Depending on the time of year, you will see moss and lush greenery spilling out from behind rock walls. Stop by a couple of main sites to visit: the 45-meter tall orange colored, Konpon Daito Pagoda and the memorial grounds before heading back to your Shukubo for in-room breakfast.   
      • Saddle up and get on your bike again for a descending ride off the mountain.  
      • Pedal through shady Cedar forests and along the river to Wakayama - a surprisingly interesting port city with a deep history for you to explore.

  • Day 7 Tour Conclusion In Wakayama

      • Your tour concludes today. There are a few options within walking distance of the hotel that are worth your visit on this last morning.  
      • Checkout time: 10am. Depending on how busy the hotel is, late checkout at 11am or 12pm can be requested.
