Te Wฤhi Pounamu (which means โ€˜the place of greenstoneโ€™ in Mฤori) is the name given to this part of the West Coast because of the abundance of pounamu (greenstone/jade) to be found here. Included in your tour today is a special opportunity to carve your very own pounamu pendant at a local gallery. There are heaps of ways to enjoy Franz Josef Glacier; weather permitting, to get up onto the bluest ice you can take a scenic helicopter flight and hike onto the glaciers. From the decks of the ferry, you'll enjoy beautiful views of the Marlborough Sounds before heading out into the open waters of the Cook Strait. The city skyline of New Zealand's capital will stretch out in front of you for the final stretch through Wellington Harbour. If you'd prefer to stay inside, the ferries have amenities to enjoy โ€“ from TV and cinema rooms to free Wi-Fi to various food and drink options . New Zealandโ€™s capital is famous for its bars and eateries, and is a paradise for lovers of craft beer โ€“ youโ€™ll be spoilt for choice tonight! • Day 10 Day 10: Wellington To Taupล
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 10: Wellington To Taupล

In the morning your tour guide will give you a tour of Wellington city and the surrounding bays. This can include a trip to Weta Workshop, where films like Lord of the Rings have been made. We also may visit the parliament buildings, cable car and Mount Victoria. On the way to Taupล we drive along the Desert Road that divides the Rangipo Desert (an area with poor vegetation because of bad soil conditions and drying winds). The climate is harsh and in winter it is not unusual to see snow. However, the biggest attractions on this road are that of Mount Ruapehu, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, the volcano better known as Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings. On the other side of the road is the lesser noticed Kaimanawa Range, home to a breed of wild horses that can be spotted on rare occasions. We arrive at the accommodation by evening. With a whole day to explore Taupล tomorrow, feel free to relax at the hostel or go out to experience some of the townโ€™s best nightlife! INCLUDED - Breakfast - Mt Victoria Lookout - Scenic drive through Tongariro National Park Download your tour itinerary here
  • Day 11 Day 11: Taupล
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 11: Taupล

A full day in Taupล... are you in the mood for peaceful lakeside tranquility or unlimited adrenaline and adventure? Either way, Taupลโ€™s got you covered. For many, the ultimate adventure on offer here is the hiking (or tramping, as we Kiwis know it). New Zealandโ€™s most famous day hike is also in the area. The 19.4 km Tongariro Crossing is an alpine crossing around Tongariro, one of the countryโ€™s most famous and most beautiful volcanoes. Itโ€™s a serious leg workout, but itโ€™s worth every minute for the incredible views and landscape. Turquoise and green lakes greet you at the top, along with vistas that stretch all the way to the coast. If youโ€™re looking for a thrill, we suggest skydiving over the lake or bungy jumping over New Zealandโ€™s longest river (and, for the really brave, getting dunked in). There are heaps of other activities on offer such as quad biking, cruising the lake to see Mฤori rock carvings, hiking along the shores, mountain biking and even the chance to soak in some of the local geothermal pools. INCLUDED - Breakfast Download your tour itinerary here
  • Day 12 Day 12: Taupล To Murupara

      Day 12: Taupล To Murupara

After our morning in Taupล we head to Kohutapu Lodge in Murupara where you'll get fully immersed into the Mฤori culture. Here youโ€™ll also have a chance to learn the world-famous haka dance, and weave your own dinner plate using flax (a type of plant). Tonightโ€™s dinner is a traditional hฤngi meal. Cooked in an underground earth oven you can expect tender meat and delicious vegetables infused with a smoky, earthy fragrance โ€“ it will fill your puku (belly) right up! The best part about spending the evening at Kohutapu Lodge? The majority of proceeds from this activity go back to the local community. INCLUDED - Breakfast - Find natural hot springs - Learn the haka - Learn to weave flax - Dinner (a hฤngi cooked in an underground oven) Please note: Private accommodation upgrades are not available for this night of the tour due to the limited availability of accommodation in the area. • Day 13 Day 13: Murupara To Rotorua
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 13: Murupara To Rotorua

While the majority of the North Island is volcanic in some way, Rotorua is exceptional for its geothermal activity. With neon blue and red lakes, steaming rivers, active volcanoes and geysers galore, there are more unique natural wonders to be found in Rotorua than many other places in the world. On the way to Rotorua, we stop at what really makes the town famous, along with giving it its unique smell: one of several extraordinary geyserlands and thermal parks. This evening we include a visit to Te Puia - a well-known Mฤori culture centre. At Te Puia you can explore Whakarewarewa geothermal valley, visit New Zealandโ€™s native kiwi birds, and learn about Mฤori history & culture. INCLUDED - Breakfast - Visit Te Puia Mฤori Village - See kiwi birds - See the Pohutu Geyser Download your tour itinerary here
  • Day 14 Day 14: Rotorua
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 14: Rotorua

Today is a free day to explore Rotorua and its surrounding area. Talk to your guide for the best free things to see and do in the neighbourhood (Kuirau Parkโ€™s steaming and hissing mud pools are a great option). There are also a number of optional activities you can choose from: If adrenaline is your thing, the highest commercial waterfall drop in the world, on the Kaituna River, is begging to be conquered on an exhilarating rafting trip. Perhaps youโ€™d like to try thundering down grassy hills in a giant air-cushioned inflatable ball (aka ZORB)? Alternatively head deep into one of New Zealandโ€™s most ancient forests and let the fun begin on a 3- hour eco canopy adventure. Experience over 600 meters of ziplines and swing bridges, plus learn about the native wildlife and ecology as you zipline from tree to tree. Or take a guided kayak trip across scenic Lake Rotoiti to the spectacular Manupirua Springs Hot Pools, which are only accessible by boat. Have a leisurely soak while your guide cooks an appetising Kiwi BBQ Dinner. After dinner enjoy a sunset paddle across the lake and a visit to the glow worm caves. However you spend today - be sure to get a good nightโ€™s sleep as there are more Rotorua adventures tomorrow! INCLUDED - Breakfast Download your tour itinerary here
  • Day 15 Day 15: Rotorua To Coromandel
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 15: Rotorua To Coromandel

Today we leave Rotorua behind to continue our adventures. Much to the delight of Lord of the Rings fans, we start today with a visit to Hobbiton Movie Set which is an absolute must-do on the way through Matamata. On this fully guided tour of the 12- acre Middle-earth set you will see Hobbit Holes, the Mill, and even enjoy a drink at the Green Dragon Inn! Itโ€™s no secret that many blockbuster hits have been filmed in New Zealand due to our incredible landscapes. Around lunchtime, we head off to the Coromandel to discover more of them first-hand. Weโ€™ll walk together out along the cliffs down to Cathedral Cove (which you might recognise from the Chronicles of Narnia films). Beautiful in its own right, with perfect beaches and massive rock arches and columns itโ€™s one of the most popular spots in the Coromandel and for good reason! Special note: Due to severe damage caused by extreme weather in early 2023, the Cathedral Cove walking track is closed until further notice. You can still opt to kayak from Hahei to Cathedral Cove, or you can simply relax at Hahei Beach. Many roads on the Coromandel Peninsula also remain impassable. For this reason, some route adjustments will take place to ensure you are still able to experience New Zealand safely. Your leader will inform you of any further details regarding the daily itinerary as you travel. INCLUDED - Breakfast - Hobbiton Movie Set Tour Download your tour itinerary here
  • Day 16 Day 16: Coromandel To Auckland
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 16: Coromandel To Auckland

Beautiful remote beaches, dense wooded forest and clear blue waters make the Coromandel one of New Zealandโ€™s favourite getaways. At low tide, weโ€™ll make our way out to the world-famous Hot Water Beach. When the tideโ€™s out, you can dig a hole in the sand where natural hot springs bubble up to create your own personal hot tub! Finally, we head to Auckland, New Zealandโ€™s biggest city. Auckland sits on the narrow sliver of land where the Northland peninsula tapers south to meet the rest of the North Island. So the sea is always nearby, and it isn't difficult to guess the origin of its nickname โ€˜City of Sailsโ€™. We arrive around 5pm, where we'll say our final farewells and your tour officially ends. But remember your final night of accommodation is included. INCLUDED - Breakfast - Visit Hot Water Beach Download your tour itinerary here
