  • Day 1 Day 1: Arrive At Chengdu

      Day 1: Arrive At Chengdu

      Our guide and driver will pick you up from Chengdu airport and then send you to the hotel in Chengduโ€™s city area for you to refresh and relax. In the evening, we will hold a welcome dinner โ€“ here we can discuss any final questions you may have about this trip, whilst sampling some of the best dishes that Sichuan cuisine has to offer and looking forward to the upcoming journey.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Chengdu-Maoxian-Songpan

      Day 2: Chengdu-Maoxian-Songpan

      After breakfast we will start our journey to Songpan. And we will first head northwest of Chengdu Plain before reaching the mountainous areas. The altitude will rise from 500 meters gradually to over 1,500 meters above sea level when we arrive at Wenchuan and Maoxian areas. Besides great valleys and the enormous Minjiang River, you will also see some Tibetan and Qiang minority villages along the way.  

      Our destination today is Songpan Ancient Town, which is a historic old town inhabited by Tibetans and Muslims. Before checking in at the hotel, we will first visit Mounigou Park in the countryside of Songpan. We will take a walk in the park, and enjoy the breathtaking scenery of forests, streams and waterfalls. The highlight of Mounigou is Zhaga Waterfall, which is about 100 meters high and 35 meters wide, and we will walk around it to take a close look.  

      When getting back to the town, we will walk around and explore. There are ancient city walls and souvenir shops in the old town of Songpan. The altitude here is about 2,800 meters above sea level.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Songpan-Huanglong-Jiuzhaigou

      Day 3: Songpan-Huanglong-Jiuzhaigou

      Today we will visit Huanglong National Park, which is located about 37 kilometers from Songpan. It takes about 45 minutes to get there. After arriving, we will take the cable car up, and then walk towards the highest lake known as Five-Colored Pool. Th highest place we could arrive is about 3,570 meters above sea level, and then we will walk around the Five-Colored Pool and take some pictures. After that, we will slowly walk down and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the other pools as well as the mountains around the park. In total we will spend 3 to 4 hours exploring Huanglong National Park.  

      In the afternoon we will drive to Jiuzhaigou, and it takes about 2 hours to get there. Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong are both UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites, and Jiuzhaigou National Park is much bigger than Huanglong National Park. We will stay overnight at a hotel outside Jiuzhaigou National Park.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Whole Day Exploration Of Jiuzhaigou National Park

      Day 4: Whole Day Exploration Of Jiuzhaigou National Park

      Jiuzhaigou National Park is very big, and the hiking trails around the lakes and waterfalls as well as in the forests are in total more than 50 kilometers long. We will take the sightseeing bus to the different lakes and waterfalls scattered in the park, and then start our exploration by walking around them.  

      There is an old saying that goes like this, โ€˜You will never want to see any water views after visiting Jiuzhaigouโ€™. There are over 100 lakes scattered in the valleys, and some of them are crystal clear. You could see fishes swimming inside.  

      Besides enjoying the beautiful scenery of the lakes, waterfalls and forests, we will also walk to one of the Tibetan villages for a visit. Jiuzhaigou literally means Nine Village Valley, because there used to be nine Tibetan villages here, hence the name. After it became a national park in early 1980s, most of the villagers moved out, and those who still lived inside no longer did farming but run souvenir shops instead. In this way, the ecosystem of this beautiful park has been protected. 

      We will take the sightseeing bus to go out of the park in the late afternoon.

  • Day 5 Day 5: Jiuzhaigou-Ruoergai

      Day 5: Jiuzhaigou-Ruoergai

      Today we will head toward north of Sichuanโ€™s Tibetan area to the beautiful endless grassland of Ruoergai. This is Amdo Tibetan area, and many locals live a traditional nomadic lifestyle. You will see yaks, horses and tents on the grassland.  

      We will visit Flower Lake in the north of Ruoergai. Itโ€™s a beautiful high-plateau lake on the grassland, and in summer there are many beautiful flowers blooming, hence the name. Ruoergai has the second largest grassland in China, and the wetland on the grassland is also home to some birds, including the famous black-necked crane.The black-necked cranes fly south to Yunnan province in winter and fly back in spring. Then they breed and the young ones grow up at the wetland on Ruoergaiโ€™s grassland.  If you are interested in horse-riding, you could also pay some money to the locals and ride a horsP on the grassland.  

      In the late afternoon we will get back to Ruoergai and stay overnight there.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Ruoergai-Hongyuan-Marerkang

      Day 6: Ruoergai-Hongyuan-Marerkang

      After breakfast we will drive to the border areas of Sichuan, Gansu and Qinghai provinces and visit the First Bend of the Yellow River. It takes about 1.5 hours to drive there and on the way you will still see beautiful grassland. The Red Army of the Chinese Communist Party passed the grassland here during their Long March in 1935.  

      The upper reaches of the Yellow River flow and wind on the beautiful grassland at the border area of the three provinces. We will walk around to enjoy the scenery here. Then we will head for Maerkang, which is the capital of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province. We will drive from Amdo Tibetan area to Gyalrong Tibetan area.  

      After arriving at Maerkang in the late afternoon, we will take a walk to explore the town.

  • Day 7 Day 7: Maerkang-Taoping Qiang Minority Village-Chengdu

      Day 7: Maerkang-Taoping Qiang Minority Village-Chengdu

      In the morning we will visit Zhuokeji Chieftainโ€™s Office in the suburb of Maerkang. It is the place where the chieftain used to live and work. Chieftains were the rulers of the different parts of Sichuanโ€™s Tibetan area in the Ming and Qing dynasties (14th to early 20th century AD). You will learn some details about the history, culture and lifestyle of Gyalrong Tibetans at this place.  

      In the afternoon we will visit Taoping Qiang Minority Village on the way back to Chengdu. Qiang ethnic group are known as โ€™People Living above the Cloudsโ€™, because many of them used to live in the great mountains between Tibetan Plateau and Chengdu Plain. The village has a history of almost 2,000 years, and it is famous for its watchtowers, which were used in the past to store weapons, food, as well as defend themselves from invading enemies. We will visit the traditional houses and watchtowers in the village and learn about their culture and life.  

      We will drive back to Chengdu in the late afternoon and check in at the hotel. After some time to refresh we will hold a farewell dinner to reminisce on our journey and have a final feast on the delights of Sichuan food.
