Fez is divided into distinct parts: the typical old walled city (Fez-el-Bali) and a French-built new town area (Ville Nouvelle). The old town enjoys World Heritage status and has an entirely car-free centre, as the twisting streets and alleys are too narrow for cars. Walking through this area youโ€™ll pass spice markets, food stalls, tanneries, guilds and souks. During your time in Fez, youโ€™ll visit the University of al-Qarawiyyin, the oldest existing, continually operating university in the world. Afterwards, stop in at Bou Inania, an educational institute which also doubles as a mosque.
