Day 1: Arrival

Stop At: Santa Marta, Santa Marta, Santa Marta Municipality, Magdalena Department
The trip starts wellcoming our clients in Santa Marta when they arrive with an overview of birdwatching in the Colombian Caribbean Coast. If you arrive early you have the option of an introductory area tour.

Day 2: Taganga

Stop At: Taganga, Taganga, Santa Marta Municipality, Magdalena Department
This area is located at 75 m.a.s.l. at 10km from Santa Marta and you can observe aquatic birds as well as Tropical Dry Forest dwellers. After a few hours of birding we will descend back to town and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon we will visit Puerto Vale to continue birdwatching. The following species can be observed in these areas: Black-crested Antshrike, Black-backed Antshrike, Slender-billed Tyrannulet, White- bearded Manakin, Barred Puffbird.

Day 3: Isla de Salamanca

Stop At: Parque Isla Salamanca, Km 11 via Santa Marta - Troncal del Caribe, Barranquilla Colombia
The day starts with an organic hot chocolate from the region. We head to Cerro Kennedy arriving at โ€œLa Laguna Encantadaโ€ (The enchanted waterspring). Itยดs the source of the Gaira River. It nestles a great number of endemic species (ej. Santa Marta Parakeet, Santa Marta Bush-Tyrant, White-lored Warbler) as well as some recently described species that lack basic information. (ej. Santa Marta Foliage-gleaner, Santa Marta Antbird y Sierra Nevada Brushfinch). Some species that can be observed after dark include: Santa Marta Screech Owl (Megascops gilesi), Rusty-headed Spinetail (Synallaxis fuscorufa), Rufous Antpitta (Grallaria rufula), White-tipped Swift (Aeronautes montivagus). Santa Marta Brushfinch (Atlapetes melanocephalus), Black-backed Thornbill (Ramphomicron dorsale). A picnic style lunch will be served at midday followed by a power nap to retake the trail to San Lorenzo trying to observe the endemics.

Day 4: San Lorenzo

Stop At: Cerro Kennedy, Santa Marta, Santa Marta Municipality Colombia
Early in the morning after a hearty breakfast we depart to reach the San Lorenzo ridge in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, (at 2.200 m.a.s.l.) to be surrounded by magnificent mountains and endemic species galore. Some of the species to observe include: Black cheeked Mountain-Tanager, Santa Marta Parakeet, Santa Marta Bush-Tyrant and White-tailed Starfrontlet among many. Weยดll stop at midday for a picnic lunch on site, followed by a short rest to continue observing in the afternoon. Our birdwatching will be extended in time depending on weather conditions. . After a delicious dinner, we will search for the Santa Marta Screech Owl birding after dark.

Day 5: Cerro Kennedy Ridge

Stop At: Cerro Kennedy, Santa Marta, Santa Marta Municipality Colombia
The morning starts with an award winning organic hot cocoa and a delicious regional breakfast. We drive up to Kennedy Ridge to find the Sacred Spring, the habitat for a large number of endemic species like: Rufous Antpitta, White-tipped Swift, Santa Marta Brushfinch, Black-backed Thornbill. The area offers panoramic views of the entire Sierra Nevada with mountain peaks all around. We take lunch on site and after a short break we will continue identifying and checking off endemic species from our bird lists. After birding all day and a hearty dinner we will observe nocturnal birds again.

Day 6: San Lorenzo - Minca

Stop At: El Campano, Santa Marta, Magdalena, Colombia
The last morning at the high mountain ridge, we can enjoy birdwatching in the surrounding area and then start our descent after breakfast. We will birdwatch all the way down to Minca. Along the way we can possibly enjoy species like Rusty-headed Spinetail, Santa Marta Brushfinch, Black-backed Thornbill. We will have lunch in Minca where we will enjoy the local scene including organic coffee, cocoa, handicrafts and a relaxed atmosphere to go over the check list for the day.

Day 7: Minca

Stop At: Minca, Minca, Santa Marta Municipality, Magdalena Department
Todayยดs breakfast will be surrounded by a variety of haliconias which attract hummingbirds inviting us to birdwatch the area towards Arimaka a hidden waterfall in a very peaceful setting. We will be able to observe species like the Santa Marta Woodstar, Bay-headed Tanager. After lunch in Minca, we will depart for the Mendihuaca - Don diego area, where we will stay for the night.

Day 8: Don Diego River's

Stop At: Taironaka Turismo Ecologico, Santa Marta Kilometro 56,6 Troncal del Caribe. Troncal del Caribe, Santa Ana Colombia
This morning we will walk up along the Don Diego Riverยดs edge till we reach a place called Tayronaka a replica of a Tayrona ancestral village. After a snack we will take a boat ride down the river to the sea to observe aquatic birds, besides howler monkeys and caimans (a small alligator). Some species we can observe include Black-crowned Antshrike, Lance-tailed Manakin, Olivaceous flatbill, Southern Bentbill, Bright-rumped Attila, Orange-crowned Oriole, Red-legged Honeycreeper, White-bellied Antbird. After sunset we will drive to Riohacha, the Guajiraยดs capital city.

Day 9: The Guajira Peninsula

Stop At: Los Flamencos Nature Sanctuary, Riohacha, La Guajira, Colombia
This morning weยดll visit the Los Flamencos Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, a beautiful place to observe aquatic and desert birds. There we can observe the Vermilion Cardinal, among others like the White-whiskered Spinetail, Tropical Mockingbird, Buffy Hummingbird, Tocuyo Sparrow and of course American Flamingo, the parkยดs emblematic bird. From here, we will cross the Guajira Penninsula to reach our rural accommodations.

Day 10: Pรกramo de Perijรก

Stop At: Manaure, Manaure, La Guajira Department
Early in the morning we will reach a peaceful place called Sabana Rubia surrounded by Golden hills that blend in with the Pรกramo de Perijรก landscape where we can observe the emblematic Andean Condor, Slaty Brushfinch, Perija Metaltail, Crested Guan. We can also observe rare species like the Yellow-throated Toucan and the Green Jay which also lives in this habitat . We will return to the small town of Manaure, Cesar for the night.

Day 11: Pรกramo del Perijรก

Stop At: San Josรฉ de Oriente, San Josรฉ de Oriente-Betania, La Paz, Cesar, Colombia
From Manarue, Cesar we will drive up to San Josรฉ de Oriente at 2800 m.a.s.l. to continue observing birds species like the Black-fronted Brush-finch, Perija Rufous Antpitta, Rufous-shafted Woodstar, Rufous Spinetail. Weยดll have a picnic lunch and drive down to Valledupar, capital city of Cesar, for a musical dinner and overnight stay.

Day 12: Los Besotes Natural Reserve

Stop At: Eco-parque Los Besotes, Valledupar, Cesar, Colombia
From Valledupar we will drive and then walk to the Besotes Private Natural Reserve to observe Dry Forest species like the Red-legged Tinamou, Chestnut-winged Chachalaca, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Rufous-tailed Jacamar. We will be treated to a succulent country lunch and return to Santa Marta late in the afternoon. Nigth at the hotel.
