Think of Tarangire National Park as part of a much larger ecosystem, and youโ€™ll understand why its game varies with the seasons. From November to May, much of the game leaves the park; herds of wildebeest and zebra head north-west onto the floor of the Rift Valley, whilst many animals disperse across the vast open areas of the Maasai Steppe. From around June to October, itโ€™s dry and the game returns to Tarangireโ€™s swamps, and especially, its river system. This is the best season for a game-viewing safari in Tarangire, which can be excellent.  Particularly large numbers of elephant herds congregate here, as do many wildebeest and zebra. There are also substantial populations of impala, giraffe, eland and buffalo. Thompsonโ€™s gazelle, Cokeโ€™s hartebeest, boors reedbuck and both greater and lesser kudu are found here. The localized and unusual gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx also occur here, though in our experience they are seen exceedingly rarely. There are still thought to be a few black rhinos in the park. Lions are common throughout Tarangire, as are leopards, whilst cheetahs seem to favour the more open areas of the south. Spotted hyena are always around, and whilst wild dogs do sometimes pass through; sightings of them are rare.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Serengeti National Park
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 3: Serengeti National Park

It is the migration for which Serengeti National Park is perhaps most famous. Over a million wildebeest and about 200,000 zebras flow south from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short rains every October and November, and then swirl west and north after the long rains in April, May and June. So strong is the ancient instinct to move that no drought, gorge or crocodile infested river can hold them back. The wildebeest travel through a variety of parks, reserves and protected areas and through a variety of habitat. Join us to explore the different forms of vegetation and landscapes of the Serengeti ecosystem and meet some of their most fascinating inhabitants.
