Itinerary of your trip Heart Of Alaska Inn Based Tour

  • Day 1 Anchorage
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Anchorage

      Drive Time: 4.5 hours

      Hiking Mileage: 8.5 miles

      Elevation Gain/Loss: 2000 feet

Today we will launch our exciting journey from Anchorage by heading north into Alaskaโ€™s โ€˜Interiorโ€™. We will first stop in the nationโ€™s third largest state park, experiencing the Chugach Range that Anchorage locals amazingly call their backyard. Weโ€™ll have breakfast and stretch our legs with a walk along a gorgeous lake before driving into the Great North. Along our drive we will start to see the landscape change as we get farther from the coastal ecosystems around Anchorage and into the stunning Alaska Range, where Denali towers above everything else at over 20,000 feet in elevation. We will explore Denali State Park with a hike through breathtaking country to kick off the week and get our legs warmed up. Then weโ€™ll settle into our lodge near the banks of the Nenana River on the edge of Denali National Park and enjoy our first dinner in the land of the Midnight Sun.

  • Day 2 Denali
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Denali

      Drive Time: 1 hour

      Hiking Mileage: 6 miles

      Elevation Gain/Loss: 1600 feet

This morning we will wake long after the sun has risen, but it may still be early. We will make our way into Denali National Park for a hike on the tundra. If the skies are clear, we will tailor the hike for the best views of โ€˜The Ancient Oneโ€™ โ€“ Denali. If the mountain is hidden, we will hike along the creeks and tundra trails of the park in search of moose, caribou, Dall Sheep and grizzlies. In the evening we will return to our lodge for a hearty dinner after a long day in one of Americaโ€™s largest and most breathtaking national parks.

  • Day 3 Denali
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Denali

      Drive Time: 4 hours

      Hiking Mileage: 6.5 miles

      Elevation Gain/Loss: 1000 feet

On our third morning we depart our lodge and make our way back towards the coast. We will stop for one last, very memorable hike in the Alaska Range, shooting for views of Denali, which is visible less than 1 in 10 days throughout the year (but more in the summer). Our lodge for the evening sits in a massive glacial river valley that downstream feeds the Cook Inlet estuary near Anchorage.

  • Day 4 Kenai Peninsula
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Kenai Peninsula

      Drive Time: 3.5 hours

      Hiking Mileage: 6.5 miles

      Elevation Gain/Loss: 800 feet

Continuing south to the coast, we will hike once again in the Chugach Range, where we will be reminded of the contrast between the salmon fed coastal forests and those of the interior. The trees will get bigger as we make our way to the Kenai Peninsula โ€“ nicknamed Alaskaโ€™s Playground. Our lodge this evening will again be nestled in a glacially carved valley, but the mountains will feel closer than ever as we experience the origins of what form a glacial fjord.

  • Day 5 Kenai Fjords National Park
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Kenai Fjords National Park

      Drive Time: 1.5 hours

      Hiking Mileage: 5 miles

      Elevation Gain/Loss: 2000 feet

Today will be our closest experience with a glacier yet. As we approach the coastal town of Seward, we will head back up into the mountains and enter Kenai Fjords National Park. Here will hike along the lateral moraine of Exit Glacier, the only glacier in the park that is accessible by foot trail. After hiking, we will settle in our final lodge in the hills above Resurrection Bay where dinner awaits. For seafood lovers, this is a great opportunity to try the freshest halibut, salmon and crab anywhere in the world.

  • Day 6 Fort Mcgilvray
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Fort Mcgilvray

      Drive Time: 30 minutes

      Hiking Mileage: 9 miles

      Elevation Gain/Loss: 600 feet

To beat the tides weโ€™ll make an early start at our hiking destination on the south side of Seward, just a few minutes away. We will hike along the coast to the historic site of Fort McGilvray, where we will learn about a big piece of Alaskaโ€™s history as a strategic military location for the United States. Next weโ€™ll enjoy lunch on the beach and watch for Humpback Whales, sea otters and bald eagles. Because the tides will be too high for us to return on the trail that brought us here, we will return to our trailhead at Millerโ€™s Landing with a short water taxi boat ride. This evening we will celebrate our final night of a week long journey in โ€˜The Great Landโ€™.

  • Day 7 Anchorage
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Anchorage

      Drive Time: 3 hours

      Hiking Mileage: 4 miles

      Elevation Gain/Loss: 1400 feet

Leaving Seward and Resurrection Bay, we return through the valleys and canyons of the Kenai Mountains to the Cook Inlet, where will hike towards views of one of the many glaciers that feed this massive estuary. After our last hike we will drive along the scenic Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet, keeping an eye out for Beluga Whales to our left and Dall Sheep on the cliffs to our right until we arrive once again in Anchorage. We will drop you off at your hotel of choice and say our fond farewells. What a week itโ€™s been!
