Day 6: Geysers El Tatio And The Laguna Tebinquinche

Another highlight: the geysers of El Tatio. Around midday, we return to San Pedro and in the late afternoon we finally reach Laguna Tebinquinche, a small salt lake in the desert landscape. In the Chilean summer, a white salt crust adorns the edge of the lagoon. The bonus: a breathtaking view of the Licancabur volcano and the surrounding desert. Take a walk around the lagoon and observe a wide variety of bird species in their natural habitat, including flamingos if youโ€™re lucky. The crowning glory of your time in San Pedro is the sunset against the magnificent natural backdrop.

  • Day 7 Day 7: Eduardo Avaroa National Park
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 7: Eduardo Avaroa National Park

The journey continues to the neighboring country of Bolivia, which is around three times the size of Germany but only has a population of around 10.7 million. Especially in the southwest of Bolivia, which you explore first, you will be amazed by the endless expanses. No houses, no street noise or crowded pedestrian zones. At the Chilean-Bolivian border, you first change vehicles, because the Altiplano - the namesake of this trip - is four-wheel drive territory. Shortly after crossing the border, you find yourself in the middle of the Reserva Eduardo Avaroa National Park, which offers a variety of attractive sights, mainly due to its many lagoons, active volcanoes, hot springs and geysers. The first stop in the park is Laguna Verde. The view of the turquoise-green lagoon with the almost 6,000-metre-high Licancabur volcano in the background is sure to keep your camera busy. Leave some space on your memory card, because the Chalviri lagoon with the hot springs of Polques, the Sol de Maรฑana geysers and the Laguna Colorada, home to over 30,000 flamingos, are also uniquely beautiful photo motifs. With a wealth of new images, you reach Villa Mar, your overnight accommodation for the night.

      Meals
Breakfast, a picnic lunch and dinner are included for you today.

      Accommodation
      Jardines de Mallku Cueva
The Hotel Jardines de Mallku Cueva is located directly on a rock face outside the small village of Villa Mar. Although the accommodation is very basic, it is one of the best places to stay south of Uyuni. Your room is furnished in a rustic style with warm colors and has a special flair thanks to the stone elements. From here you have an unobstructed view of the surrounding area with the mountains in the distance. Relax in front of the fireplace in the lounge and reflect on the day.

      Notes
The route covers approx. 270 km. The highest point of the day is around 5,000 m, Villamar is around 4,100 m above sea level.
The journey from the Chilean border to Uyuni (days 7 and 8) is made by four-wheel drive vehicles on unmade roads. Due to the altitude, you should always have something warm to wear in your hand luggage. It gets very cold, especially in the early morning and evening.
  • Day 8 Day 8: Uyuni Salt Lake And Incahuasi Island
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 8: Uyuni Salt Lake And Incahuasi Island

Photos saved and batteries charged? Then you can continue through the diverse country in the heart of South America. Past huge rock formations and through the small towns of Alota, San Agustin and San Juan, you finally reach the heart of the largest salt desert in the world. The subsoil of the huge salt pan is of volcanic origin. Bubbling salt springs occasionally break through the salt crust to the surface. The drive across the track made of pure table salt on the snow-white lake, which is completely covered in a thick layer of salt, is not an everyday experience. Like a mirage, an island suddenly appears in the white endlessness, densely overgrown with cacti up to ten meters high. With a bit of luck, nimble viscachas, which live on the island, will run past you. These rodents, which belong to the chinchilla family, were originally only found in southern Bolivia, western Paraguay and the northern and central regions of Argentina. The island of Incahuasi is also known as Isla del Pescado (Fish Island). You take in the otherworldly landscape for a while, then drive to your hotel, where you can enjoy the evening with a cozy get-together.

      Meals
The included meals are breakfast, a lunch picnic in the desert and dinner in the Palacio de Sal.

      Accommodation
      Hotel Palacio de Sal
The Hotel Palacio de Sal on the eastern shore of the Uyuni salt lake is around 25 kilometers from the town of Uyuni. The hotel was built entirely from salt bricks and salt also plays an important role in the furnishings. You will spend the night in comfortably furnished rooms with impressive desert architecture. From the roof terrace and lounge, you have a magnificent view of the salt desert. The restaurant serves delicious regional dishes.

      Notes
The driving distance is approx. 380 km. The island of Incahuasi is approx. 3,665 m above sea level.
Depending on the weather and the water level on the Uyuni, Incahuasi Island may not be accessible. In the rainy season from January to March, Lake Uyuni is only partially navigable. However, the water reflections that appear during this time are unique and a popular photo motif.

It is an important ruin of a pre-Inca culture on the Altiplano plateau and is one of the most important archaeological sites in Bolivia. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The most famous sight is the Gate of the Sun. It was carved out of a single block of andesite and is estimated to weigh between seven and twelve tons. It features a relief of a deity holding two snake sceptres in his hands. The mask-like face is framed by a radial headdress. After a detailed tour of the complex, we drive back to La Paz.

  • Day 10 Day 10: La Paz With Different Eyes
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 10: La Paz With Different Eyes

Today we get to know La Paz from a different perspective. The tour starts at the main cemetery. A shoeshine boy accompanies our tour. He will show you his neighborhood and the markets of La Paz. "Fish Street" and "Flower Market" are just two of the popular places we will discover today with a "Lustrabota", as the shoeshine boys are called here. On Eloy Salmรณn Street, a street full of stores and market stalls, the latest electronic devices are on sale. On "Shopping Cholitas", on the other hand, the "Cholitas", the indigenous women of Bolivia, buy their typical skirts and blankets. The tour ends at the famous San Pedro prison. Your tour guide will be happy to tell you the interesting stories. Afterwards, we take the most important means of transportation: the highest and most comprehensive cable car system in the world, which connects the lower-lying seat of government of La Paz with the city of El Alto, which was part of La Paz until 1985. We take one of the many cable car lines back. In the afternoon, we explore the historic city center of La Paz with the baroque Basilica de San Francisco and the Plaza Murillo, with the presidential palace and the congress building. A few streets further on, we are enchanted by the local market. In addition to colorful weavings and handicrafts, herbs and elixirs from traditional indigenous sacrificial ceremonies are also on sale here. We then marvel at the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) in the south of the city. Its bizarre erosion formations offer beautiful photo opportunities, donโ€™t miss them. The landscape here is characterized solely by desert and cacti. In the background you can see a rock needle, which is popularly known as the Muela del Diablo (Devilโ€™s Molar).

      Meals
Meals included are breakfast and lunch.

      Notes

The shoeshine boys of La Paz have to contend with many social difficulties and are excluded from society. This can sometimes make them appear a little shy. The shoeshine boys only speak Spanish. Your tour guide in Bolivia will be happy to translate your questions for you. You will also be served lunch today in the projectโ€™s restaurant. By taking part in the city tour and todayโ€™s visit, you are definitely making a contribution to improving their living conditions.

When building the lodge, the Andean architecture was preserved and combined with modern comfort. The lodge has a restaurant and a bar. Notes
The driving distance is approx. 180 km. Copacabana and Lake Titicaca are situated at an altitude of approx. 3,820 m.
