Ålesund is internationally famous for its distinctive architecture in the “Art Noveau” style (Jugendstil) with towers, spires and imaginative decoration on the house facades. This particular style of architecture in the centre of Ålesund is a result of the catastrophic fire in 1904 that completely destroyed the centre of the town.

Day 4: Alesund: From Modern Life To Medieval Ages

Sightseeing tour around Ålesund + Visiting Medieval Village Sunnmore - the open-air museum with its vast collection of old houses. By car/minibus. Duration 3 hours.

While walking in between these houses you feel as if you are put back in time, and you will see how people lived in earlier times. In the main building the fascinating exhibitions on archaeology and culture in the Sunnmøre region will provide you with a unique insight into the life of the people who have inhabited this area for several thousand years. Take a look at the museum’s vast boat collection too, including replicas of Viking ships. The beautiful area surrounding the museum is also excellent for walks.

After visiting the museum, we drive to the Aksla mountain and then - Hessa island with a panoramic view over fjords, mountains, islands, and Ålesund port and downtown.

Day 5: Alesund - Geiranger, Day Of Adventures

Geirangerfjord is the jewel in the crown of the Norwegian fjords. During the Ice Age, the enormous power of the glaciers carved out this huge canyon between mountains 1600 meters high, and the fjord depth reaches 250 meters. This makes Geirangerfjorden as deep as the Grand Canyon.

We start at 9-00. The first photo-stop to admire Storfjord, where it divides into two sleeves as if embracing Strandafjellet Mountain. From here the famous Geirangerfjord begins.

Next, we proceed along the coastline, through the many mountain tunnels to the ferry pier. While we across the fjord, you will have 15 minutes to make memorable photos from the center of the fjord on the ferry deck!

From the ferry village Eidsdall, we head to our first observation platform Ørnesving — the Eagle road. At the top lies the Ørnesvingen viewing point, with its own waterfall. From here the view opens towards Geiranger, across the Geirangerfjord with its near-perpendicular mountainsides, the “Seven Sisters” waterfalls.

Next viewpoint is Flydalsjuvet, where you can sit on the throne of the Queen Sonya. This rest area lies near the steep mountainside at the inner end of the Geirangerfjord and is one of many locations that offer spectacular vistas over the fjord. From here you can see the 1,502-metre Laushornet peak and the 1,629-metre Eidshornet peak. Centuries-old timber was used in the construction of the service building and information point. The viewing platform at Flydalsjuvet gorge is designed with an upper and lower level connected by a walkway. Lunch.

Weather permitting, we board a ferry and sail down the Geirangerfjord towards Hellesilt village.

Afterwards we continue on through idyllic places, wild landscape of fjords, rivers and mountains before we will reach next ferry port in the village Sykkylven.

Despite we pointed Åndalsnes as our tour destination, we actually will go to explore Trolls country, which stretches from Åndalsnes to Bjorli through Romsdal valley.

The Romsdalen valley is long and narrow with majestic towering mountains on either side. Along the valley floor in a wild and beautiful setting runs the foaming salmon river, Rauma.

At the village Verma the Rauma runs through a 30-40 meter deep gorge, forming Slettafossen waterfall. The waterfall is secured by fences on either side and can be crossed by a bridge.

In many places in Norway, the mountains take spectacular shapes, but along the Romsdalen valley, nature took it to the extremes.

The wall features a vertical drop of more than 1000 m, which makes it the highest of its kind in Europe.
