Opatija is frequently also called the beauty of the Adriatic, Old Lady, or Queen of Tourism. In 1844 Hignio Scarpa, a patrician from Rijeka built the bay tree and oak forests of the villa Aangiolina (it was the beginning of tourism in Opatija).

Like nowhere else in Europe, laurels, chestnuts, and palm trees grow here, and kiwis, tangerines, and lemons grow in private gardens. Opatijaโ€™s parks are the result of centuries of care and donations made by the sailors who came to its port.
