On the way back to Yerevan, you will stop at the ruined site of Svartnoz Cathedral, a palace church built in the 7th century, and at the ruins of the medieval fortress of Amberd, one of the few witnesses of Armenian military architecture. Haghpat was one of the largest religious and cultural centers of education in medieval Armenia.

On the way, you will visit a copper mine in the small mining town of Alaverdi. Around 1900, Alaverdi already covered 25 percent of the copper demand in Tsarist Russia. In the late afternoon, you will reach the spa town of Dilijan in "Armenian Switzerland". Check in at your hotel in Dilijan.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Dilijan - Sevan - Noratus - Selim Pass - Karahundsh - Goris
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 4: Dilijan - Sevan - Noratus - Selim Pass - Karahundsh - Goris

Todayโ€™s journey first takes you to Lake Sevan (1900 m above sea level) in the high mountains, the "blue pearl" of Armenia. Visit the Sevanavank Monastery (9th century), picturesquely situated on a peninsula in the lake, and enjoy the view of the lake and the surrounding mountain ranges. Afterwards, visit the Noratus cross stone cemetery. Here, hundreds of cross stones from several centuries defy the sea wind and the sabre-wielding enemies of Christianity like stubborn, unyielding soldiers. In the village, you will visit a stonemason who still carves these cross stones today.

The route continues over the Selim Pass to Goris. You stop at the old caravanserai, which is still relatively well preserved and was once a rest stop on the legendary Silk Road. The Karahund megalithic culture is located on the rugged plateau near Sisian (area 7 ha). You will also see the archaeological site "Karahundsch Observatory". According to some enthusiastic archaeologists, it is one of the oldest observatories in the world. It is often compared to the English Stonehenge. You spend the night in Goris.

  • Day 5 Day 5: Goris - Day Trip Tatev - Khndzoresk - Goris
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5: Goris - Day Trip Tatev - Khndzoresk - Goris

Today you will go on a day trip that first takes you to the Tatev Monastery (9th-13th century). It is one of the most important architectural monuments in the country and lies high above the deep gorge of the rushing Vorotan. Not only will you visit the beautifully situated monastery, but you will also travel on the worldโ€™s longest cable car (5.7 km), which was built in October 2010 and connects the monastery with the village of Halidzor via the Vorotan Gorge.

Another highlight is the cave town of Khndzoresk. In a picturesque valley with bizarre rock formations, there are numerous caves, some of which were inhabited until the 20th century. An approximately three-hour hike, which is moderately difficult due to the ups and downs of the terrain, takes you through this impressive cave town landscape. (Sturdy shoes required).

Afterwards, return to your hotel in Goris.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Goris - Noravank - Areni - Yerevan
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 6: Goris - Noravank - Areni - Yerevan

Drive to the Noravank Monastery. The 13th century complex is picturesquely situated at the end of a gorge carved into the rock by the Darichay River. It consists of 3 churches, burial chapels and secular buildings surrounded by a defensive wall. At the mausoleum church you will see a detailed elaborated figure of God, the only representation of this kind in Armenia. You will stop in the town of Areni, the cradle of Armenian wine. There you will taste different wines made from local grape varieties. You will continue towards Chor Virap Monastery, which is located near the Armenian-Turkish border just in front of the imposing biblical Mount Ararat (5,165 m) reaching to the sky. The monastery is inextricably linked with the Christian history of Armenia, as it was here that Grigor the Illuminator was imprisoned in a hole in the ground for thirteen years by King Trdat III. The healing of the hopelessly ill king through Grigorโ€™s prayers made Christianity the state religion in 301. Arrival in Yerevan in the late afternoon and check-in at your hotel.

Your journey continues to the Geghard rock monastery, situated in a picturesque rocky gorge at the end of the Asat Valley. For lunch, you will visit a local house where you will have the opportunity to watch the preparation of the typical Armenian bread "Lavash".
