Days 2-16: Yukon River Canoe Tour

Our canoe trip on the legendary Yukon River starts today. Over the next two weeks, we will paddle on the Yukon, roam the wilderness and spend wonderful, eventful days. In total, we cover over seven hundred river kilometers on this large river. The starting point of our tour is right at the mouth of the Takhini River into the Yukon River. After just a few minutes on the river, we have left the hustle and bustle behind us. After about half a day of stretching the river, we reach Lake Laberge, a natural lake around 50 kilometers long through which the Yukon flows. If there is no wind, you can expect relaxed paddling past picturesque bays with small sandy beaches or steep cliffs. Due to the latent wind susceptibility of this section of water, we always stay close to the shore here for safety reasons. The first section of the river after the lake is called the โ€œ30 Mile Riverโ€. Here, a fairly fast current carries us forward quickly and there are numerous opportunities here in the clear waters of the Yukon to fish for Nordic grayling or even on Northern Pikes, how the pikes are run here. In this section, the Yukon is still narrow and the chances of getting bears or elks in front of the camera are correspondingly high. We pass the tributaries of the Teslin and Big Salmon River and reach the small Indian settlement of Carmacks on day 8. The small settlement is a modern community with all amenities and the last place to connect to the highway before reaching Dawson City. Here you can spend a day off and have the chance to shop for forgotten or lost items, enjoy a hot shower and do laundry. Just behind Carmacks, the famous 5-finger rapids await us, alongside the ring rapids, the only rapids on the entire route. With the paddling techniques we have learned so far, we can conquer the standing waves without any problems. High steep banks line the Yukon in this area for long distances. The following tributaries such as the White River, Stewart River and Pelly River bring a lot of water and widen the Yukon visibly on the way to Dawson City. From kilometer to kilometer, the river is getting more and more powerful. We pass through islands where we might set up camp one time or another, and we also reach the abandoned Fort Selkirk. Not only here, but everywhere we can still find relics and remnants of the glorious old gold-digging and trapper era in the Yukon.

      Day 18: Dawson City

Today we roam the city, drive with our maxivan up to Midnight Dome, the local mountain of Dawson City and enjoy a magnificent view over the city and the river, which we have finally mastered the day before. Then we continue directly into the goldfields at Eldorado and Bonanza Creek. Even today, as over a hundred years ago, people are still actively digging for gold. We also visit the workers in an active mine at Hunker Creek and will try our luck with the gold pan ourselves. We visit the Jack London Cabin and also the Goldgraeber Museum in Dawson. In the evening we meet at Diamond Tooth Gertieโ€™s casino for can-can dancing, gambling and lots of good humor. Those who have not had any luck panning for gold during the day will get another chance at roullette or card games! Hotel overnight stay in Dawson City.

  • Day 5 Day 19: Dawson City - Whitehorse
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 19: Dawson City - Whitehorse

With our maxivan we drive on the Klondike Highway back to the starting point of the tour in Whitehorse. Of course, we also stop at the 5 Finger Rapids, which can be photographed very well from the road. In the evening in Whitehorse we let the tour end comfortably and spend the night in the hotel for the last time.
