Day 2: Explore The Naval Tradition And Rural Landscapes

The first day starts with a circular hiking route exploring picturesque villages, rural landscapes, and the most important cultural monuments around the capital of the island, Chora.

This hiking route starts from Chora, following the coast of Neiborio and continues via the narrow uphill path to Gialia Beach, where the river forms a unique natural environment. The route crosses the riverbed and after a while the path leads up to โ€œFabricaโ€ Ebeirikos Watermill, an interesting derelict factory, which gave life to the area before the Second World War, producing pasta using a large watermill, and later a mechanized steam mill. The footpath follows the river, crosses the Leontos bridge, and after a few challenging uphill steps, we arrive at the impressive Bistis-Mouvelas Tower, dated from the 17thcentury, in Stenies Village.

Our hike follows a stepped path, across lush landscapes of oaks, olive and walnut trees, along the river, to reach Apikia Village and the famous Sariza Spring. We continue hiking, this time to Pythara waterfalls, where we stop for a while to rest and relax with the sound of the water. On our way back, we descend via a different excellent cobbled path and we enjoy the magnificent view to the capital city, the Venetian Castle and the Lighthouse โ€œTourlitisโ€™.

Hiking tour 12 km, walking time around 4,5 hrs. The evening is free for you to choose either to relax or try the beach. For your dinner try one of the local restaurants.

Day 3: Visit A Living Historical And Architectural Monument, The Panachrados Monastery

This magnificent hiking tour starts from the green village of Menites, and via an excellent trail under the shade of plane trees, will lead us to the settlement of Messaria, the old Byzantine center of the island. With our destination being the Panachrantou Monastery (alt.500m), a living historical and architectural monument (wooden carved temple 18th c, library, etc), we follow the paved path, crossing the legendary arched bridge of Stichiomeni (The Haunted). After a challenging uphill for some minutes, we arrive at the abandoned village of Petrias, a monument of Andros folk architecture. Upon our arrival at the monastery, the hospitable monks guide us around. After a short rest and a picnic in the monasteryโ€™s yard, we will start our way back to Chora.

This time heading to Livadia and through the โ€œPotamosโ€ stream we reach Andros Town to end our hiking tour.

Day 4: Dipotamata Little Gorge And Upper Castle

Today and after breakfast, we will follow the old way from Chora to Korthi, the central agricultural and commercial artery for South-East Andros until 1950. You will explore the most important structures in Dipotamata gorge, the watermills, consisting the basis of an open-air eco-museum!! Dipotamata is a small river of extreme natural beauty, crossing a long valley of environmental interest. The natural environment is unspoiled, a shelter to a variety of animals and birds. 22 watermills, survived in the entire gorge. Our trail continues to the Upper Castle which offers the most breathtaking view of the island. It is situated on an imposing plateau north, at an altitude of 600 meters. The high mountains of the area are steep and give the impression that the rocks spring up at the top. It was the largest medieval city of Andros, but signs of fortification from the Byzantine period have also been found.

Our hike continues to the traditional seamenโ€™s village of Kochylou with an excellent view to Korthi Bay, where we rest with a coffee or refreshment at the old local โ€œkafeneioโ€ of the village.

Then, via a downhill cobbled footpath we end up in Korthi Bay(Yialos).

Donโ€™t forget to bring your swimming suit. A refreshing dive is always the best after a long hike!

The walk continues towards the North-East, above the verdant Achla valley, officially nominated as a protected area of natural beauty.
