Day 2: Exploring St. Petersburg. Visit Peter & Paulโ€™s Fortress. Boat Trip. Departure to Moscow

Stop At: St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg, Northwestern District
Panoramic city tour. St Petersburg is known as the Venice of the North so what can be better than seeing the city from its waterways? Weโ€™ll travel by boat (during navigation period, otherwise by car) along the River Neva and the cityโ€™s many canals past palaces, parks and cathedrals.

Stop At: Peter and Paul Fortress, Petropavlovskaya Fortress, 3, St. Petersburg 197022 Russia
Visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress. Occupying a commanding position on tiny Hare Island, the fortress was built by Peter the Great in 1703 to protect the land near the River Neva from attacks from Sweden. However, it didnโ€™t see combat until 1917. Recently this fortress prison has had many of its buildings converted into museums and features a splendid cathedral containing the tombs of the Romanov monarchs.

Day 3: Highlights of Moscow: Kremlin, Armoury, Red Square. Departure to St. Petersburg

Once the residence of the Tsars and now the base for the Russian president, the Kremlin is a fascinating place to explore. You can almost feel the ghosts of Tsarist Russia in Cathedral Square. Day 4: Catherine Palace & Amber Room. Hermitage Museum. Departure to Helsinki

Stop At: The State Hermitage Museum, Palace Emb., 30-38, St. Petersburg 191055 Russia
Perhaps the most famous of St Petersburgโ€™s many historic sights, the Hermitage is the focus for todayโ€™s tour. Once the home of the Russian Tsars and now a world-class art museum, this spectacular building would be a draw for its architecture even without the three million works of art that form its extensive collection. Dating from the Stone Age to the 20th century, there are paintings, sculptures, icons, coins and jewellery waiting to be admired, from just about every famous name you could imagine.

We will visit the Catherine Palace, another of Royal St Petersburgโ€™s architectural masterpieces, located 25km south of the city at Tsarskoe Selo (Pushkin). Itโ€™s a delightful baroque building designed by the Italian Bartolomeo Rastrelli and inside youโ€™ll be wowed by the fabulously decadent Amber Room and its sumptuous interior decor.
