Itinerary of your trip Wild Beauty In The Baltics - Moors, Forests, Baltic Islands

  • Day 1 Day 1: Arrival In Tallinn - Matsalu National Park
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 1: Arrival In Tallinn - Matsalu National Park

After arriving in Tallinn (by 3 p.m.), you will first travel to the west coast to Matsalu National Park. You will move into your guesthouse in a wonderful location very close to the Baltic Sea. This evening you can set off on your first short exploration tour of the national park. Look out for moose and native birds, such as the worldโ€™s smallest owl: the tawny owl. Overnight stay in the guest house. (Travel time approx. 1.5 hours, 125 km).

  • Day 2 Day 2: On A Seal Tour Through The Estonian Islands
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 2: On A Seal Tour Through The Estonian Islands

The Estonian archipelago includes over 2200 smaller, partly untouched and larger islands. The ferry takes you first to Estoniaโ€™s second largest island: Hiiumaa (Dagรถ). From here you continue by fishing boat to the smaller islands off the coast. With a bit of luck, you will be able to marvel at the rare ringed seals that can be found off the islands of Hanikatsi and Saarnaki. They curiously poke their heads out of the water as you slowly approach. On Saarnaki, after a short walk through dense, jungle-like juniper forests, you will visit a historic farmhouse. A leisurely picnic rounds off the excursion with typical delicacies. Overnight stay as on the previous day. (Travel time approx. 30 min; travel time ferry: 2 x 1h 15 min).

  • Day 3 Day 3: Exploring Matsalu National Park And Haapsalu
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 3: Exploring Matsalu National Park And Haapsalu

Today you will first roam the floodplains of Matsalu National Park on foot, on your way to the bird sanctuary in Haeska. From the bird tower on the northern shore of Matsalu Bay, you can enjoy a unique view of the flocks of birds cavorting in the shallow water - a favorite spot for many migratory birds. (Amateur) ornithologists will get their moneyโ€™s worth here: whooper swans, greylag geese, white-tailed eagles, mallards, great white egrets, sandwich terns, lapwings, wigeons, grey herons, mute swans and many more flock together here, creating a wonderful natural concert. This is a wonderful place to enjoy the moment by closing your eyes, listening to nature, feeling the wind on your skin and allowing yourself to slow down. Afterwards, devote yourself to the interesting Estonian culture (alternatively on the following day). The lagoon town of Haapsalu once served the Russian tsars and the composer Peter Tchaikovsky as a spa and resort. The imposing Bishopโ€™s Castle and the railroad station built entirely of wood are among your sightseeing destinations. In the evening, board a motorboat and cruise through the Kasari river delta in search of beavers and various bird species. Overnight stay as on the previous day. (Travel time approx. 1-2 hours).

  • Day 4 Day 4: Soomaa National Park And Bog Shoe Hike
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 4: Soomaa National Park And Bog Shoe Hike

Today you travel on to the next national park in Estonia. Your next destination is Soomaa National Park - Europeโ€™s largest rain moor national park. Here you will experience how the inhabitants have developed their own flood culture, as the snowmelt regularly causes huge floods here in spring. With moor shoes on your feet, you explore the ten thousand hectare Kuresoo raised bog with its peat layer up to seven meters thick. Without these special shoes, there would be no way of penetrating the bizarre landscape, where you will learn more about the local special flora and fauna. Your guide will be happy to show you cloudberry, dwarf birch and sundew. If you dare, you should pack your swimming gear today - because in the middle of the moorland there is a unique opportunity for a refreshing and (so they say) rejuvenating swim in a moorland lake! Overnight stay in the guest house. (Travel time approx. 2 hours, 150 km; walking time approx. 2.5 hours).

  • Day 5 Day 5: Canoe Tour And Sauna
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5: Canoe Tour And Sauna

You start the day with a canoe tour on the Raunda River, paddling past ancient spruces, oaks and trembling poplars as well as the odd beaver lodge. With a bit of luck, a small kingfisher will dart across the water in front of you and perch on one of the branches that reach far into the water. The river is calm and, depending on the groupโ€™s ambitions, the trip takes between 2 and 3 hours (approx. 10-12 km). Your guesthouse today has a wonderful sauna, as the Estonians celebrate their sauna culture in a similar way to the Finns. Optionally, you can use it today and cool off immediately afterwards by jumping into the river (possibly for an extra charge).

  • Day 6 Day 6: Bear Watching And Overnight Stay In A Hut
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6: Bear Watching And Overnight Stay In A Hut

Estonia currently has a population of around 1000 wild bears, half of which live in the forests and moors in the north-east of the country. Your route today takes you across the country to the protected Alutaguse forest area, where you will stay in a simple but cozy shared cabin. On the way, you stop in Rakvere, where you shop together for your evening picnic in the bear hut. From the parking lot in the forest, it is then a 30-minute walk to the hut, which was built especially for brown bear watching. The shy, majestic animals usually only dare to come out at dusk. Until then, keep an eye out for foxes, raccoon dogs or perhaps even a moose. Early risers also have a chance of spotting the rare capercaillie at dusk. Overnight stay in the Bรคrenhรผtte. (Travel time approx. 2-3 hours, 230 km).

  • Day 7 Day 7: Medieval Pearl Tallinn
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 7: Medieval Pearl Tallinn

From the wilderness, itโ€™s time for a leisurely breakfast in a cafรฉ in Rakvere. Here you can freshen up a little and talk about the experiences of the previous night over omelettes, pancakes and hot coffee. Continue to the capital Tallinn, which you will explore in the afternoon on a two-hour guided tour. You can really feel the charm of the Middle Ages here. The preserved original street system from the 13th century leads you past numerous original houses that have not changed in size or shape since the 15th century. A splendid end to your eventful journey and a real contrast to the diverse nature experiences of the last few days. Overnight stay at the hotel. (Travel time approx. 1.5 hours, 130 km).

  • Day 8 Day 8: Departure From Tallinn
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 8: Departure From Tallinn

Depending on your departure time, you can use the morning for an individual walk through pretty Tallinn. Transfer to the airport or individual extension.
