Day 3: Port Moresby - Wewak

Early morning arrival in the countryโ€™s capital: Port Moresby. The city is the countryโ€™s commercial center and accordingly an interesting mixture of modern buildings, numerous fortune hunters and the typical urban traffic chaos. However, Port Moresby also stands in stark contrast to many other regions of Papua, which are far less populated and where people try to preserve their diverse tribal cultures and rites. You are welcomed at the airport and fly on to Wewak. The settlement in the Sepik region is the starting point for the explorations of the next few days, which will take you far into the branched river network of the legendary Sepik Plain. The afternoon is at leisure to arrive in PNG. Overnight stay in a simple hotel.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Wewak - Sepik Plain
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 4: Wewak - Sepik Plain

You will be driven to Pagwi, which lies on the banks of the mighty Sepik. From there, you continue on the brown waters of the river in a simple motorized canoe. Dugout canoes and motorized canoes are the main means of transport in the region and represent the only possible access to modern civilization, towns and markets for many villages. Due to the high cost of fuel, however, river transportation is limited to larger shared cabs and traders, so that the majority of the Sepik population continues to live very close to nature and traditionally. You head for the village of Kanganamun, where you will meet representatives of the famous crocodile men. The Papuans, adorned with a crocodile-shaped scar pattern, are highly respected members of society and symbolize the special relationship between the riverside inhabitants and the spirit world of the Sepik. Overnight stay in the village in a simple hut. (Travel time approx. 4 hours, motor canoe approx. 3 hours).

  • Day 5 Day 5-6: Sepik Plain - Wewak
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5-6: Sepik Plain - Wewak

The next two days are dedicated to exploring life on the Sepik. Learn more from the villagers about the extraction of starch flour from sago palms, about fishing on the river and attend artistic dance performances in the villages of the region. Intricate carvings, elaborate body ornaments and magnificent spirit houses accompany you on your way through the branching labyrinth of river arms. You will meet men from the Yatmul people - the famous crocodile men. When the sun sinks behind the Prince Alexander Mountains in the evening, grey clouds of smoke rise from the green canopy of the jungle and hornbills fill the evening with their deep cries, you will realize how far you have strayed from the world we know. Overnight stay as on the previous day. Return to Wewak in the course of the sixth day. Overnight stay in a hotel in Wewak. (Travel times for the day trips depend on the water level, travel time to Wewak approx. 4 hours, motor canoe approx. 3 hours).
