After breakfast you will head to the east side of the Central Valley. Our first visit will be to Irazรบ Volcano National Park. Irazรบ is the highest volcano in Costa Rica and one of Costa Rican first National Parks. Due to its altitude, most TV and Radio networks have their antennas here. Last major eruption in 1963, threw ashes all over the central valley for months, causing big health problems among the population, especially with respiratory problems and eye irritation. Later on, youโ€™ll visit the colonial capital of the country, the city of Cartago home of the countryโ€™s Patriot Saint, Our Lady the Virgin of Los Angeles, and her beautiful Basilica. Then continue to Lankester Gardens known for its vast collection of plants, great opportunity to capture the Neotropical flora. Then, transfer to Dota.

In route, you will visit an indigenous community called Rey Currรฉ, known for its famous โ€œFiesta de los Diablitosโ€ (little devilโ€™s party) held in January commemorating the resistance of the indigenous people against the conqueror Spaniards. This is a stop not many people know about: but you can find a great craft store, with the famous original Boruca Masks. Finally, you will reach your next destination in Costa Rica, Drake Bay.

Caรฑo Island is a gem of the South Pacific of Costa Rica! Not only do the waters surrounding this island contain some of the most abundant and varied marine life in the world (sea diving), but the island also possesses several pre-Colombian archeological artifacts. Caรฑo Island is believed to have once been a pirate hideout and some go as far as to claim that the island was the inspiration for Robert Stevensonโ€™s Treasure Island. The journey to the island will give you the opportunity to see dolphins, sometimes whales, sea turtles, rays and other animals! You will go with a local guide, from the only tour operator owned and managed by locals.

The Savegre River provides Class II, III and IV rapids that are manageable in sturdy rafts that accommodate 2 to 6 people. You will stop at swimming spots and waterfalls, if the rafters want a break from paddling. There is always time to enjoy the abundant variety of wildlife along the river (egrets, osprey, toucans, parrots, kingfishers, cormorants, etc.). After a 13 mile trip down the river, we wind our way back to the little village of โ€œSilencioโ€ to enjoy lunch and then head back to the hotel
