Day 1: Let’S Go To Colombia

The suitcase is ready, the budgie is in the neighbor’s care, off you go! Today you fly to Bogotá. When you land, your tour guide will be waiting for you, full of anticipation to introduce you to your home country over the next few weeks. You drive to your hotel, where you can relax after the long flight. To get you in the mood for Colombia, you meet up in the evening for a welcome drink and typical finger food.

Casa Deco is just a few minutes’ walk from the colonial and tourist attractions of Bogotá. Each of the 21 rooms is painted in a different color and elegantly and understatedly decorated with Italian furniture. Day 2: The Capital City Of Bogotá

Time for the first exploratory tour in Colombia. We visit the central square of the Colombian capital, the Plaza de Bolívar with its impressive cathedral and the parliament building. At the Paloquemao market, we sample exotic fruits and taste delicious fruit juices. Strengthened, we follow in the footsteps of one of Colombia’s most important artists: Fernando Botero. In a colonial villa in the La Candelaria district, over one hundred of Botero’s sculptures and paintings are on display alongside international works. The tour continues with a visit to the Gold Museum, which houses the world’s most important collection of pre-Columbian gold jewelry, including the famous golden Muisca raft and the heart-shaped chest of the Calima culture. In good weather, it is worth taking a short cable car ride up the hill of Montserrate. From up here, the size of Bogotá, which has more than eight million inhabitants, will surprise you.

In Colombia, there is no traditional apprenticeship training as you know it in Germany. The Taller training project helps young people to find employment opportunities and preserve intangible cultural heritage in connection with traditional professions. The school currently offers various technical training programs and short courses. By visiting today, you are helping to support the trainees.

Day 3 Day 3: Flight To San Agustín

Day 3: Flight To San Agustín

You fly from Bogotá to Pitalito. From here, it is only a short drive to the small town of San Agustín. The region around San Agustín is the most important archaeological site in Colombia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will encounter the Río Magdalena for the first time on this trip. The strait here is considered the narrowest point of the river.

Day 4 Day 4: San Agustín

Day 4: San Agustín

First, you will visit the archaeological park in San Agustín, which is the most important archaeological site in Colombia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spanish missionaries first reported on the mysterious statues of a lost culture in the forests around San Agustín. You can see a cross-section of this culture in the park. You can linger at each of the mysterious statues and ask yourself whether it represents a human or an animal, whether it is threatening or calming. Then it’s time to put on your hiking boots as you hike to the La Chaquira archaeological site, high above the valley of the Río Magdalena. Indigenous sculptors have carved several reliefs into the natural rocks here. Enjoy the fantastic panoramic view. The journey then continues to a narrow section of the river, where the roaring water forces its way through an impressive rocky landscape.

Day 5 Day 5: The White City Of Popayán

Day 5: The White City Of Popayán

On the way to Popayán, you cross the central mountain range of the Andes and drive through the Paramo, the typical high moorland landscape of the Andes. On the way, you take a short walk and take a close look at the frailejones plants, which can grow up to three meters high. These can only be found at high altitudes in Ecuador and Colombia. Four of Colombia’s largest rivers originate in this water-rich region and flow in a star shape towards the Pacific, Caribbean and Amazon. Enjoy the landscape and, if the weather is fine, the view of the Puracé volcano. In the afternoon, you will reach Popayán, also known as the white city. It was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1983, but the reconstruction was based closely on the colonial architecture. See for yourself on a short tour of the city.

Day 6 Day 6: Visit To The Guambianos

Day 6: Visit To The Guambianos

You visit a Guambiano family. The indigenous people still live relatively traditionally in the highlands and wear their typical costume, a black skirt and a bright blue cloak. The blue color is a symbol of the cosmos and black symbolizes the earth. With a bit of luck, you will also have the opportunity to speak to a shaman in person. You will have lunch with the village chief in a nearby settlement and learn a lot about the life of the indigenous people caught between tradition and modernity. In the afternoon, the tour continues to the Colombian coffee region.

In the cloud forest of the Cocora Valley, you can’t miss Colombia’s national tree, the wax palm, which can grow up to 50 meters high. You hike through the valley with its unique ecosystem. On a clear day, you can see as far as the snow-capped volcanoes of the Central Cordillera. Afterwards, you will visit a colonial village with the typical architecture of the coffee zone. Here you will be introduced to the secrets of the Tagus game. This sociable game, a mixture of boules and bowling, was already very popular with the indigenous people 500 years ago and is the national sport of the Andean population. Stroll through the alleyways of the village and treat yourself to a typical lunch at one of the stalls.

Day 8: Coffee - Surprising Variety

The morning is all about coffee. On a coffee plantation, you will learn about the entire process of coffee processing, from harvest to export. You walk around the plantation and can watch the coffee pickers at harvest time as they skillfully pick only the ripe coffee cherries. You can also try it out for yourself. The processing of the harvested fruit is then explained. Finally, the best part, because now you have the opportunity to taste the hacienda’s coffee. You then fly from the coffee zone to Medellín. One of the most dangerous cities in the world more than 20 years ago, the "City of Eternal Spring" is now one of the most innovative metropolises in the world.

You stroll through the hustle and bustle of the city center to the famous Plaza Botero and marvel at the statues of Fernando Botero, which have since become the city’s landmark. Afterwards, discover Medellín’s innovations to improve the quality of life: take the cable car up to the Santo Domingo district, once notorious for its gang violence. Open-air escalators then take us to Comuna 13, where you will learn more about the moving history of this neighborhood, especially at the time of the "Orión" military operation in 2002, and how the residents are coming to terms with their experiences today. One form of processing is street art. Street art in Medellín is much more than just modern art. It sees itself as a form of political expression. On a graffiti tour with a local artist, you will learn more about the history and social present of the district and the significance of street art for the social communication and cultural identity of the Paisas.

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city in the morning. The Parque Arví is waiting for you! But first, enjoy the view of the boomtown from the cable car. Once you’ve arrived in the green oasis, take a walk along one of the hiking trails in the ecological nature reserve. Afterwards, visit a farm with a Silletera tradition. Every summer, the Feria De Las Flores takes place in Medellín, where hundreds of flower farmers take part with their colorful and wonderfully fragrant silletas, a kind of flower cart. The traditional farm is just as colorful and fragrant. Here you will learn more about the silleta tradition and how a silleta is made. You will then fly to Cartagena in around an hour.

In the morning, you will explore the colonial old town of Cartagena on foot, with its magnificent mansions, narrow streets and old churches. You then make your way to the San Felipe fortress, which was built by the Spanish to protect wealthy Cartagena from attacks from the mainland. Feel like you’ve been transported back to the time of the pirates in the winding corridors of the fortress. Visit the La Popa monastery and enjoy the view of the Caribbean city. In the afternoon, we discover Cartagena’s art scene. In the charming Getsemaní district, colorful colonial houses line the streets and colorful paintings adorn the facades. In addition to the local art scene, the Museum of Modern Art showcases the city’s multifaceted history and cultural wealth.

Today we follow in the footsteps of African culture. Just south of Cartagena, we are greeted by San Basilio de Palenque, the first free city in America. The village was founded in the 17th century by fugitive slaves. The statue of Bioho Benkos, the founder of Palenque and foreman of the liberation of slave labor in Cartagena, bears witness to this in the Plaza Central. On our excursion, we learn about their culture and a few words of their unique language, Palenquero. For lunch we enjoy a traditional lunch cooked on wood.

Day 13 Day 13: On The Way To Taironaka

Day 13: On The Way To Taironaka

The route continues along the coast towards the east. At Barranquilla, you meet up with an old friend again: the Río Magdalena. However, it has become much wider here at its mouth. The new cable-stayed bridge, which spans the longest river in Colombia, is over 3 km long. Just one of the beautiful photo opportunities on the way towards Santa Marta. Once you arrive in the Tayrona region, you have time to relax in the midst of paradisiacal nature.

Villa María is beautifully located in the Tayrona National Park, on a hill and just 10 minutes from the beach. Taironaka, an authentic paradise, lies on the idyllic banks of the Don Diego River, surrounded by the gentle foothills of the majestic Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. As a former indigenous settlement, it preserves the ancient paths and terraces of the Tayrona civilization and is now inhabited by the fascinating Kogi descendants. A scenic drive along the coastal road takes you to the nature reserve. There you will be led by a local guide through the impressive protected area, which will enchant you with its breathtaking flora. After enjoying the view from the vantage point, you will hike down to the river and return to the entrance of the reserve by boat. After lunch in a typical restaurant, there is still some time to relax on the beach before returning to your accommodation. The evening ends with a farewell dinner together.
