After a few kilometers along the Saar, you will reach the Völklingen Ironworks. This World Heritage Site is the only ironworks in the world from the heyday of industrialization that has been completely preserved. The Saar makes a majestic loop shortly before Mettlach, enclosing Montclair Castle in its middle and proudly presenting itself in front of the Cloef viewing terrace. The Saar loop is one of the most impressive river landscapes in Germany. You could almost believe that the whole of Mettlach is made up of Villeroy & Boch. The ceramics museum is located in the former abbey. Here you will find ceramic treasures from the Villeroy & Boch collections from past centuries to the present day. Overnight stay in Mettlach.

  • Day 3 Mettlach - Trier | Approx. 42 Km - Easy Stage
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Mettlach - Trier | Approx. 42 Km - Easy Stage

You cycle along wooded slopes and mighty sandstone cliffs along the Saar. There may be time for a short stop in the pretty little town of Saarburg. The town is just as much on the way as the old hermitage in Kastel. With vineyards such as Ayler Kupp and Scharzhofberg, the most sought-after wines in Germany grow here. Wine pope Hugh Johnson calls the Scharzhofberg from Wiltingen a Riesling of the highest perfection. The Saar flows into the Moselle at Konz, and from here it is not far to Trier. There are no comparable magnificent buildings from Roman times north of the Alps. For a time, the entire Roman Empire was ruled from here. Come and get a taste of antiquity. The imperial palace has survived numerous wars and today serves as a Protestant church. It still impresses today with its imperial grandeur. Just how small and insignificant the supplicants on Constantine’s throne must have felt can only be appreciated by those who make their own way from the entrance to the altar. Overnight stay in Trier.

  • Day 4 Trier - Piesport | Approx. 48 Km - Easy Stage
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Trier - Piesport | Approx. 48 Km - Easy Stage

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Traben-Trarbach - Cochem | Approx. 55 Km - Easy Stage

Wine lovers in particular will get their money’s worth on this stage. Countless vine-covered slopes will delight your heart and whet your appetite for a wine tasting in one of the traditional wine taverns. Just after Traben-Trarbach, you reach the Moselle bend near Zell, the "Zeller Hamm". The 900-year-old Marienburg castle sits enthroned on the back of the hill, from where you have a view of the Moselle from both sides. The town of Zell, which was also once settled by the Romans, is one of the largest wine-growing communities on the Moselle with around 6 million vines. Look forward to Cochem with its picturesque center and the old imperial castle from the 11th century. Overnight stay in Cochem.

The route continues between the Moselle and steep vineyards via Winningen to Koblenz. Here the Moselle flows into the Rhine at the Deutsches Eck. An exhilarating panoramic view awaits you on the cable car ride to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress (incl.). The numerous sights allow you to immerse yourself in the city’s varied past.
