Itinerary of your trip Rijeka City Break

  • Day 1 Day 1: Rijeka
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 1: Rijeka

Arrival to Rijeka. Check-in in hotel/private accommodation. The gathering place the following days will be the same - the beautiful Kobler Square. Once Piazza delle Erbe, the green market and today favourite meeting point of Rijekans and their guests. We wish to make your first day in our town a relaxing one so we are taking you on a tour of Rijeka by touRIst bus. Besides viewing Rijeka and Opatija from a completely different dimension, if you put your headphones on you will find out, in several languages, some interesting facts from Rijekaโ€™s history. In case the bus is not available (which can also happen), we will go along the same route with our vehicle...and all those information that you would have heard in the bus - we literally hear from us. And reveal you how we got them smiley. On our return we will stretch the legs to the St Vitus Cathedral, visit the former City Hall on Kobler Square and pass under the famous Old Gate (Roman Arch) leaning on the City Hall. And then we will sit down for a coffee in our favourite bar in the front of the City Hall and listen to a story about the history of Kobler Square, about a fountain with the old โ€™kolodrobโ€™ (paper millstone) and about why the Town clock is adorned with a double-headed eagle. Free time for an evening walk around the town - we recommend Rijekaโ€™s Molo Longo pier from which you can enjoy in Rijeka from the sea perspective. And then take a drink โ€“ or as called by Rijekans cuga or pijaฤa  - in Boonker at the waterfront โ€“ once a boonker, today a coffee bar. Dinner. Overnight.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Rijeka
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 2: Rijeka

Breakfast. Gathering at Kobler Square.Today we will combine history and gastronomy so thatโ€™s why we start our journey from the former Piazza delle Erbe (the Green Square that is the Green market) towards the main Rijekaโ€™s market - placa and unavoidable fish market. It is said that every townโ€™s belly is its green market โ€“ so, letโ€™s check out the Rijekaโ€™s.After the green and fish market, we continue our ฤ‘ir (tour) along the town that flows because there are several sights eagerly awaiting for us โ€“ Adria palace at Rijekaโ€™s waterfront, the Capuchin Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, several valuable Baroque palaces complex Municipij and Stendarac - the stone town flagpole.  Governorโ€™s Palace, formerly lavish residence of Rijekaโ€™s governor, today the building of Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral and โ€™a neighbourโ€™ of Rijeka City Museum in which is almost always an interesting exhibition to view. We will now descend along the Palace of Justice and Rijeka prison Via Roma (โ€™nikad domaโ€™  - translated means never go home - will add Rijekans) to Leaning tower i.e. the bell tower of the church of the Assumption situated in the Old Town. It is 40 cm leaned so even Rijeka has its leaned tower in Europe. From Kosi toranj (Leaning tower) we continue toward the CNT Ivan pl.  Zajc, but meandering the streets to see the monument to Mlikarica (Milkmaid) at Mljekarski square and beautifully painted wall on the small square - painted by the famous Rijeka artist Vojo Radoiฤiฤ‡. We arrive in the front of the Croatian National Theatre, central cultural institution of this town on Rjeฤina. Several information about the theatre, a bit of history and some photos to be taken in the threatre park andโ€ฆit is lunch time. You are hungry, right? We too. We will have lunch in one of Rijeka taverns offering littoral dishes prepared just of those fresh ingredients which weโ€™ve seen this morning in the market. After the lunch a short break, and then direction dessert in Cacao Coffee&Sweets bar. All those calories should be burned, so is there anything better than stairs to do that!? Number 561 โ€“ the number of Trsat stairs - probably sounds scary - but believe that view on Rijeka from the top of Trsat is worth of each climbed stair. Take a breath and letโ€™s go. The first on our tour is one of the oldest Croatian Marian sanctuaries โ€“ the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat. The legend says that it originated in 1291, and how important it is for Vatican proves the fact that was even twice visited by Pope John Paul II. We will visit the Chapel of votive gifts, see the monument to the Pope and walk along the beautiful park. And as icing on the cake - Trsat Castle, medieval fortress on a 138 meter high hill - the brave guardian of the city of Rijeka. Here we will see the permanent museum exhibition and the gallery and then sit down to a well-deserved cup of coffee.

And enjoy a stunning night view of Rijeka. We can take the same way to go back to hotel/private accommodation - Trsat stairs or we can go by bus. It is up to you. Overnight.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Rijeka
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 3: Rijeka

Breakfast. Gathering at Kobler Square. Today we are going to enjoy a rich industrial heritage of the town. We will visit the former building of paper factory - "Hartera", located in the river Rjeฤina valley, then Rikard Benฤiฤ‡ โ€“ former sugar factory and Sugar Refinery Palace that is considered the most famous baroque masterpiece in Croatia.  We will not miss neither the Lazaret, kind of quarantine hospital of maritime towns, decades later, the biggest tobacco factory in the Habsburg monarchy, and then the engine factory. In Industrijska Street we will see the house in which was invented and the factory in which was produced the worldโ€™s first torpedo. Within the former factory is still located launching ramp, a world example of industrial heritage. In Rijeka was also the Chocolate and Cocoa factory, the first industrial plant for producing the chocolate in Croatia. At Kantrida will see the "3. maj" shipyard. We will make little shift away from industry and visit the stadium under the rocks, Kantrida, which CNN ranked the third weirdest stadium in the world. Lunch after sightseeing. After lunch we are going to visit Rijekaโ€™s mosque, one of the most beautiful European mosques. An unusual beauty and Mediterranean flair make it absolutely particular. After the sightseeing, free time for individual activities. Return to hotel/private accommodation. Overnight.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Rijeka
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 4: Rijeka

Breakfast. Free time until departure. Do not forget to drink a glass of Rijeka water from one of its taps placed at Korzo as this water is well known for its purity and high quality. There is an old saying about Rijeka water that says: "Whoever drinks the Rijeka water once will eventually come back again".
