      Flight to Porto. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Porto, where you will spend the next two nights. At dinner in a restaurant you will get to know your fellow travelers as well as your tour guide and together you can get in the mood for the coming week in Portugal. (A)

  • Day 2 Day 2: Charming Porto

      Day 2: Charming Porto

      Situated on the hills at the mouth of the Douro River, you will get to know the city of Porto on a half-day guided tour (UNESCO World Heritage Site). The medieval city captivates with its historic buildings, remarkable monuments and famous port wine houses that dominate the hillside of Vila Nova da Gaia. You will be amazed by the famous Stock Exchange Palace (included), the Clรฉrigos Tower (exterior visit), one of the highest church towers in the country, the Romanesque Cathedral (exterior visit) and the S. Bento train station decorated with azulejos. Afterwards, you will visit a port winery and learn interesting facts about the production of the wine. Would you like to taste it? During a boat trip on the Douro (approx. 45 min.) you will get to know the silhouette of the city from the water. The rest of the day you have time to discover the city individually. End the evening in one of the typical pubs within walking distance from the hotel. (F)

      After breakfast you will drive to Aveiro, the "Venice of Portugal". The city is considered one of the most beautiful destinations in Portugal. Colorfully patterned moliceros (gondola-like boats) and natural lagoons provide a picturesque backdrop. In the afternoon, reach Coimbra, which became the capital of the kingdom in the Middle Ages and a place of learning during the Renaissance. Today it is the most important university city in the country. You will visit the old university (UNESCO World Heritage Site), which will impress you. 1 night in Coimbra. (F)

      The first Portuguese Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Gualdim Pais, founded the mighty castle in Tomar and built within its walls the now famous Monastery of the Knights of Christ (UNESCO World Heritage Site). The landmark of the city captivates with its different stylistic elements, which unite in this monastery due to centuries of changes. The large collection of cloisters is remarkable! Then you will drive to Fรกtima, one of the largest centers of the cult of the Virgin Mary in Portugal. Then visit the town of Batalha, with the largest monastic building in Portugal (UNESCO World Heritage Site). It was built in Gothic-Manuel style and is a monument to Portuguese independence. 1 night in Batalha. (F)

      On the occasion of the victory over the Moors, the Cistercian monastery of Alcobaรงa was built in 1178 (UNESCO World Heritage Site). In the Middle Ages it was one of the richest monasteries in Europe. Among the most interesting parts of the monastery are the cloisters, the refectory and the huge kitchen, through which a branch of the river runs. At noon you will walk through the beautiful fishing village of Nazarรฉ with its narrow streets and long beach. You will have the opportunity to dine in one of the local restaurants. Afterwards, you will visit the atmospheric town of ร“bidos. The picturesque streets and whitewashed houses decorated with flowers invite you to take a stroll. The entire town is still surrounded by a city wall. In the evening you will reach the capital Lisbon. 3 nights there. (F)

      Look forward to Lisbon, the white city on the Tagus. Located at the mouth of the Rio Tejo and on several hills, you will get to know the city under expert guidance. In the morning you will discover the statue of Marques de Pombal, the historic Rossio Square and the Alfama district with its narrow streets leading up to the famous St. George Castle. You can enjoy a unique view over the city from the Miradouro de Santa Catarina before having lunch in a typical restaurant. Then walk through the Belรฉm neighborhood, built to honor glorious years of Portuguese history. Youโ€™ll pass the famous Jerรณnimos Monastery (included) and the Belรฉm Tower (exterior visit) (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites) with Venetian decorated balconies. To finish the day, your path will take you under the Ponte 25 de Abril, Europeโ€™s longest suspension bridge, with views of the remarkable Christ statue. (B/M)

      Today you will explore the surrounding area of Lisbon, which impresses with a wonderful landscape and a variety of plant species. The town of Sintra (UNESCO World Heritage Site) attracts with its numerous palaces, villas and parks. The nobility and the wealthy preferred the town to the hot summer of Lisbon and could start from here to the hunts and rides in the beautiful nature. You will visit one of these residences, the Palacio da Vila, the former summer residence of the Portuguese kings. It is considered the landmark of Sintra. Your tour will take you through various halls with interesting ceiling paintings and coats of arms. The highlight is the Arab Hall, which is covered with white, blue and green azulejos. Finally, you will arrive at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point in Europe, with a fantastic view of the impressive, rugged landscape. After a panoramic drive along the "Portuguese Riviera" with the fashionable seaside resorts of Cascais and Estoril, retreats of the countryโ€™s wealthy upper class, you will return to Lisbon. In the afternoon you will have the opportunity for your own explorations in Lisbon. End your vacation in a typical fish restaurant. (F)
