The town is considered one of the five sacred dhams (pilgrimage sites) for devout Hindus.  The centerpiece of Pushkar is the holy Pushkar Lake. According to legend, the lake was created when Lord Brahma dropped a lotus flower from his hand, and the spot where it fell became the lake. It is believed that taking a dip in the sacred waters of the lake during the Kartik Purnima festival can cleanse sins and provide spiritual liberation.
