Day 2: Old Delhi, Qutub Minar And Sikh Temple Bangla Sahib

Namaste! - A warm welcome. After landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport, we transfer to the hotel and then immerse ourselves in the capital of India. Welcome by your tour guide and tour start at 10 am at the hotel. First we head to old Delhi, to the Jama Massjid and walk through the narrow alleyways and bazaars. Afterwards, we will marvel at the hustle and bustle of the Sikh temple Bangla Sahib. With a short stop at todayโ€™s government district and India Gate, we travel to the southern outskirts of the city to the Qutub Minar complex, in the middle of which is a 73-metre minaret. We use the modern and efficient metro to get through the dense city traffic and return to the hotel. Depending on how we feel (jet lag) and how much time we have left, we can also go on an evening excursion to Counnaught Place and round off our first day in India there. Note on arrival: If you arrive late the evening before, at midnight or in the early hours of the morning, we recommend an extra night in Delhi. (-/-/A)

  • Day 3 Day 3: Fantastic Himalayan Flight To Ladakh
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 3: Fantastic Himalayan Flight To Ladakh

We fly from Delhi to Leh, the starting point for most tours in Ladakh. We fly over the western Himalayas. In good weather, you can even make out K2 in Pakistan or Kamet to the east in the distance. The two peaks of Nun and Kun are also clearly visible in the west. As we approach the Indus Valley, we pass Stok Kangri (6,153 m), a popular mountain for summiteers. At an altitude of 3,500 m, the air is already quite "thin", so that we can rest after arriving at the hotel and take a leisurely walk to the market in the afternoon. (F/-/A)

  • Day 4 Day 4: Thiksey Monastery &Amp; Short Hike To Shey
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 4: Thiksey Monastery &Amp; Short Hike To Shey

Today, too, we take it easy and give our bodies the opportunity to acclimatize. After a good breakfast, we visit the most beautiful monastery in the Indus Valley, which is not far away. Thiksey sits high up north of the banks of the Indus and offers us a wonderful introduction to Tibetan Buddhism, which can be practised freely and untouched here in Ladakh. A large assembly hall with statues of the Shakyamuni and Maitreya Buddhas, among others, is just one of the jewels of this complex, which belongs to the Tibetan Gelugpa order and is architecturally similar to the Potala in Lhasa. Afterwards, our guide will take you on a short hike (approx. 1 hour). From Thiksey Monastery we walk to Shey, passing fields fed by the waters of the Indus. The monastery and palace complexes of Shey date back to the first kings of Ladakh and are under special protection for archaeological research and restoration. A visit is not planned. The thin air at an altitude of 3,500 m is particularly noticeable during our first few days here in Ladakh. With a healthy mix of short and light activities and enough time to rest, our bodies can acclimatize optimally. (F/-/A)

  • Day 5 Day 5: "Morning Prayer" With Tibetan Monks, Hemis Monastery &Amp; Ladakhi Cooking Class
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5: "Morning Prayer" With Tibetan Monks, Hemis Monastery &Amp; Ladakhi Cooking Class

The monksโ€™ day begins early and usually with morning prayers in the monasteryโ€™s large assembly hall. We also follow the call of the friendly lamas. In the Matho monastery on the south side of the Indus River, we can attend the morning ceremony. Matho, and the neighboring Stakna Monastery, are only visited by a few travelers and thus offer us a great inspiring atmosphere. We take this with us to the Dukpa monks of Hemis. Well hidden and situated at an altitude of just under 4,000 m, we let ourselves drift inside and outside the religious complex. We can actively explore the lovely surroundings on foot and experience the thrill of a new altitude. Return journey back and "down" to Leh. In the evening, we immerse ourselves in Ladakhi cuisine during a cooking class. (F/-/A)

  • Day 6 Day 6: Over The Khardun La (5.359M) To The Nubra Valley, Camels, Desert &Amp; Diskit Monastery
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6: Over The Khardun La (5.359M) To The Nubra Valley, Camels, Desert &Amp; Diskit Monastery

The highest point of our journey takes us up to Khardung La (5,359m). During a short stop here at the top of the pass, we can feel the thin air. Half an hour later and around 1,000 meters below, we set off on another short and easy hike along the small river (approx. 2 hours). Now we are in the beautiful Nubra Valley, through which the caravans once traveled from Leh to Kashgar. The riverbed of the Shyok is at its widest at the small village of Hunder. White snow-capped mountains, golden sand dunes and green poplar groves characterize the unique landscape. We can cross the sand hills on foot or between the humps of Bactrian camels. A little way back, we see the monastery complex of Diskit, built over 350 years ago, perched imposingly on the mountain slopes. During our visit, we have a fantastic view to the north of the Saser Kangri (7,671 m), which is already one of the eastern foothills of the Karakoram Mountains, along with many other high snow-capped mountains visible to us. At the foot of this range flows the Nubra and is the village of Sumur (3,170m), where we spend the night today. (F/M/A)

  • Day 7 Day 7: Village Walk &Amp; Return To Leh
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 7: Village Walk &Amp; Return To Leh

After a leisurely breakfast and a charming village walk in Sumur (approx. 1.5 hours), we leave the Nubra Valley and drive back to Leh. The rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight stay in a hotel in Leh. (F/M/A)

  • Day 8 Day 8: Tso Moriri In Changthang Area
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 8: Tso Moriri In Changthang Area

We follow the Indus upstream to Mahe and then turn south to Tso Moriri. The 8-hour drive is long but beautiful. We make numerous stops to stretch our legs in the magnificent landscape. The huge Changthang region stretches from here far into Tibet. It is home to the white and reddish-brown wild donkeys, which are usually found in small herds. If you are incredibly lucky, you may also come across wild yaks, which are much larger than the domesticated animals. We reach our destination in the afternoon, the crystal-clear and deep blue Tso Moriri salt lake at an altitude of 4,521 meters. Salt was once mined here to sell at the markets in Leh. Nomads have lived here for generations and have adapted their way of life to the harsh winters. We recommend stretching your legs in the afternoon on an easy hike along the lake (approx. 1.5 hours). Overnight stay near the village in a simple guesthouse or tented camp with comfortable tents, each with 2 beds and a private bathroom. (F/M/A)

  • Day 9 Day 9: Tso Kar &Amp; Taglang La
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 9: Tso Kar &Amp; Taglang La

Enjoy the quiet morning hours by the lake, breathe in the clean air and let your eyes and thoughts wander. If you like, you can visit the small Korzok Gompa and watch the monks perform their daily rituals. Our return journey to Leh first takes us to Tso Kar, another smaller salt lake, on whose shores we can spot various bird species such as the black-necked crane. Shortly after the "White" lake, we reach the main road between Manali and Leh. Following this road we cross the Taglang La, a 5,328m high pass, and reach our well-known Indus valley again. Overnight stay in a hotel in Leh. (F/M/A)

  • Day 10 Day 10: Activity On The Water &Amp; Drive To Likir
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 10: Activity On The Water &Amp; Drive To Likir

The Indus has its source in the north of Kailash, the Tibetans call it the "river from the lionโ€™s mouth" (Singhe Khababs). For water lovers, there are various activities in the cool water (optional). Back on four wheels, we first reach the place where the Zanskar River flows into the Indus, pass the small village of Basgo (optional visit to the unique monastery ruins) and drive up a side valley to Likir (3,651 m). There we move into our accommodation. Afterwards, free time to relax, go for a walk or visit the monastery. Note: As an alternative to rafting, the route can also be covered in a vehicle. If the water level is too low, rafting can also take place on the Zanskar River. (F/M/A)

  • Day 11 Day 11: Hike, Alchi Monastery &Amp; Lamayuru Lunar Landscape
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 11: Hike, Alchi Monastery &Amp; Lamayuru Lunar Landscape

After breakfast and check-out, we walk through a small village, through Ladakhโ€™s high mountain desert and reach a lovely valley, where our vehicle is already waiting by the river (approx. 2 hours). A short distance takes us to the other side of the Indus to Alchi. In this idyllic village, lined with apricot trees, we meet the inhabitants as they work in the fertile fields. They lead a simple and contented life here. Sheep and cows wander through the small alleyways. From the lower part of the village with the main monastery, we hike up a short distance. With a bit of luck, the guardian of the small, tranquil gompa will open the doors for us. Although the monastery complex of Alchi, which is around a thousand years old, is no longer actively used for religious purposes, it is of unique cultural and historical significance and beauty and gives our visit a special touch. A spectacular drive further west along the Indus now lies ahead of us. We make our way through narrow gorges up to the lunar landscape of Lamayuru. We stop wherever we like and reach the village of the same name to check in at a simple guesthouse. We still have enough time to walk around the village and the monastery grounds. In the meantime, there are always magnificent views of the surrounding scenery. (F/-/A)

  • Day 12 Day 12: Half Day Hike To Wanla &Amp; Continue To Kargil
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 12: Half Day Hike To Wanla &Amp; Continue To Kargil

Lamayuru is a frequent starting point for the heavily frequented treks through the Zanskar and Markha valleys. We also follow in these footsteps for at least half a day and hike over the Prinkti La (3,800m) to the beautifully situated village of Wanla. The landscape is almost surreal and amazes us with its beautiful formations and narrow, dry gorges (approx. 4.5 hours). We continue on four wheels. Arriving in Kargil (2,676m), we can marvel at the Nun, at 7,135m the highest mountain in the Himalayan range in the state of Jammu-Kashmir. Right next to it, a little more rugged, is its smaller brother Kun at 7,077 meters. We are greeted with joy by the locals, who are delighted to welcome visitors to their town. We stroll along the bazaar street and stop for dinner. Incidentally, we are now in Kashmir and will experience both a cultural and scenic contrast. The next few days will be characterized by dense green forests. (F/M/-)

  • Day 13 Day 13: "Road Trip" Over The Zoji La To Sonarmag
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 13: "Road Trip" Over The Zoji La To Sonarmag

The early bird catches the worm. Immediately after breakfast, we set off for our destination for the day, Sonarmag. The route to get there is characterized by indescribable beauty and variety, comparable to the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan, among others. Up to Zoji La (3,529m) after about 100 kilometers, the landscape is barren. We stop at the war memorial in Dras and pass small villages with beautiful mosques. 5,000m mountains and deep gorges characterize this section. The road is the only overland route connecting Kargil with Srinagar, our destination for tomorrow, and from fall to spring the Zoji La is closed due to the weather. Immediately after the pass, the vegetation changes abruptly. Dense coniferous forests, lush green meadows and clear mountain streams brighten our spirits. Around midday we reach Sonamarg, a popular vacation resort for Indians and a welcome stopover for us too. Use the rest of the day to complete your travel diary or to explore the surrounding area. (F/-/A)

  • Day 14 Day 14: Hike To Thajwas Glacier &Amp; Drive To Srinagar
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 14: Hike To Thajwas Glacier &Amp; Drive To Srinagar

You could call it Sonarmagโ€™s local mountain. The Thajwas towers above the village and offers us a great hike. We hike across green meadows lined with conifers to its glacier. If you wish, you can also complete this shallow route on a pony. After returning to Sonarmag, we can now pack our hiking boots. After about three hours on four wheels, we reach the lively little town of Srinagar. Our boatman is already waiting for us on the promenade of the famous Dal Lake. We load our luggage onto his shikara, as the typical means of transportation on the lake are called. We lean back and let ourselves be sailed leisurely to our houseboat. We check into our room for two nights and enjoy the service of our friendly host. (F/-/A)

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 15: Dal Lake &Amp; Old Town Tour

The day on the lake starts early. Before breakfast, we also head to the vegetable market, drifting in the shikara again. We return to the houseboat, where the table is already laid. Afterwards, we take a walking tour of Srinagarโ€™s old town to get a taste of Kashmiri culture. Handicrafts, walnut wood carvings, copperware, carpets and pashmina wool shawls are famous not only in India but all over the world. Try the Kashmiri cuisine, which is known for its variety of spices. Drink a glass of Kawa tea, which is particularly soothing in winter, or bite into a delicious Kashmiri apple. We cross back over to our floating hotel on the Shikara and end the day at sunset. (F/-/A)
