Day 3: Jaipur โ€“ Celebrate Holi Festival Of India

      About Holi Festival:

Holi is is a festival of colours & is one of the greatest festivals of India mainly of Hindu religion. It was at first known as โ€˜Holikaโ€™. The Holi festival finds a complete depiction in early religious works such as Jaiminiโ€™s Purvamimamsa โ€“ Sutras and Kathaka โ€“ Grhya โ€“ Sutras. Historians too consider that Holi was famous by all Aryans but more so in Eastern part of India.

The Holi festival gets its name from the Puranic ( Very Old ) & vedic tale of Holika. Holika was the sister the demon โ€“ king Hiranyakashipu. The king was very selfish and wanted that everyone in his sovereignty worship him alone. Much to his anger, he found that his son, Prahlada, was a worshipper of Lord Vishnu. It was then that Hiranyakashipu determined to kill Prahlada in support with his sister.

Holika had been fixed with a boon that gave her the control to remain unaltered by fire. To lure Prahlada into a fire, Holika sat him on her lap and conjured to play with him while Hiranyakashipu ordered his men to set the place where they sat on fire. It was then that Holikaโ€™s boon failed her.

In her menacing mission to kill the Lordโ€™s devotee, Holika was burned to ashes while Prahlada came out unharmed.Holi symbolises triumph of our privileged aspirations over our lower, base desires. It is the burning of our unimportant, material desires at the altar of our goal of self-development.

It arises for the victory of good over evil, a thesis that runs throughout every Indian festival. For it is impossible that those who live their lives by truth will ever be overcome by the corrupt.

Hence people wake up early in the morning to play and celebrate Holi with coloured powder ( Gulal ), drink bhang, fill there pichkaris ( water guns ) with coloured water to throw on other people celebrating around, dance on dholak beatings and on ritual songs, exchange and eat Gujia ( a traditional food of Holi ).
