Day 4: On Old Trade Routes Through Eastern Bhutan

We are now south of the Himalayas and cross beautiful valleys and small passes. We pass villages where the golden roofs of Buddhist monasteries catch our eye. Khaling, bordered by a fertile and green valley, offers an opportunity for a stop where we gain an insight into the production of textiles. Trashigang (1,150m), our destination for the day, was once a trading center on the busy route between Tibet and Bhutan and is still used today by the semi-nomads from Merak and Sakteng as a marketplace for their famous traditional costumes. On arrival, we pay a visit to the dzong (fortress) of Trashigang. Built in 1659, it serves as the administrative center of the monk community and rewards us with a fantastic view! Hotel, 6-7h / 180km drive (F/M/A)

  • Day 5 Day 5: Drametse Monastery &Amp; Mongar Dzong
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5: Drametse Monastery &Amp; Mongar Dzong

We remain in subtropical climes today and follow in the footsteps of a nun called Choten Zangmo on a short detour. As the granddaughter of the famous Buddhist master Terton Pema Lingpa, she founded the Drametse monastery in the 16th century, which is one of the largest and most important in Eastern Bhutan. It provides the people of the region with inspiration for their faith, which is reflected in many facets of everyday life for the Bhutanese. On this trip, you too will be able to delve deeper into the religious and cultural peculiarities of this fascinating country, both during visits to monasteries and, above all, through contact with the locals. A relatively young dzong, built in 1930 using time-honored methods, awaits us in Mongar (1,620 m). It is an impressive example of how Bhutanโ€™s traditional architecture has been handed down and preserved over the centuries. Hotel in Mongar, 3-4h / 96km drive (F/M/A)

  • Day 6 Day 6: Scenic Delights &Amp; Sacred Sites Of Guru Rinpoche
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6: Scenic Delights &Amp; Sacred Sites Of Guru Rinpoche

One of the most scenic sections of our journey is about to begin. We pass the 4000 meter high Thrumsing La ("La" means pass). Bubbling waterfalls cascade down from steep cliff edges, flowers bloom in vibrant colors and our eyes are treated to an incredible variety of vegetation. Quite atypical for Bhutan, the houses in the villages in the Ura Valley are neatly grouped together. We stretch our legs and see for ourselves. We also pay a visit to the monastery dedicated to Guru Rinpoche. The region has truly blossomed since this monastery was built. Our next detour, the village of Membartsho, which is lined with many prayer flags, is also closely associated with the Indian master. He left numerous "termas" here, so-called hidden treasure texts, about which our tour guide will provide you with exciting details. Believers offer small offerings made of clay ("Tsa Tsas") here, usually in the form of a small chorten, which is said to commemorate Buddha Shakyamuni. Continue to Bumthang (2,600m). Hotel, 7-8h / 196km drive (F/M/A)

  • Day 7 Day 7: Monasteries Of Bumthang
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 7: Monasteries Of Bumthang

In keeping with the importance of this place, there are 108 chortens surrounding the three monasteries of Kurje. They date back to the work of the Indian master in the 8th century. Even before that, the influential Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo, who had a Nepalese, a Chinese and a Tibetan wife at his side, had the Jambay monastery built. Among many other things, it was intended to tame the evil forces of the country. Delve deeper into Buddhist history and culture and pick out your personal highlights each day, which you can organize in your travel diary. Our morning visits also include the Jakar Dzong. Somewhat elevated with typically massive walls and beautifully painted wooden constructions, it is another good example of Buddhist monastery architecture in Bhutan. We fortify ourselves with a hearty lunch and continue our exploration of the Bumthang region: Tamshing and Lhodrak Kharchu monasteries. The latter is known for its great commitment to the preservation and revitalization of Tibetan culture. Hotel (F/M/A)

  • Day 8 Day 8: Seclusion In The Beautiful Phobjikha Valley
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 8: Seclusion In The Beautiful Phobjikha Valley

At midday we reach Trongsa, from where the first two kings of Bhutan ruled. We spend the night in the beautiful, somewhat remote valley of Phobjikha. This place is popular as the winter home of black-necked cranes. They fly over the Himalayas and escape the dry and cold regions of Tibet to stay here in a milder climate. Free time on arrival. Hotel in Gangtey (3,000m), 7-8h / 198km (F/M/A)

  • Day 9 Day 9: Gangtey Monastery With Hike &Amp; Punakha Dzong
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 9: Gangtey Monastery With Hike &Amp; Punakha Dzong

Immediately after breakfast, we listen to the monks in Gangtey Monastery, which belongs to the ancient Nyingmapa order and is the largest monastery in Bhutan. The families in the surrounding houses all contribute to the upkeep of the monastery and the care of the monk community. We now hike from this complex along a beautiful path here in the Phobjikha Valley across meadows, through coniferous forest, along fields and past farmhouses. Actively enjoy nature at an altitude of around 3000 meters (approx. 2h / 6km). Continue eastwards to a very prominent point on the Mo River. The imposing Punakha Dzong is located where the river is fed by another body of water. Until 1955, this was the capital of Bhutan. Nowadays, it still serves as the winter residence of the monastic order. Hotel in Punakha (1,300m), 3h / 70km (F/M/A)

  • Day 10 Day 10: Hiking Through Travel Terraces Or Activity In The Water? Himalayan Delight On Dochu Pass &Amp; World Peace Stupa
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 10: Hiking Through Travel Terraces Or Activity In The Water? Himalayan Delight On Dochu Pass &Amp; World Peace Stupa

After breakfast, we hike through rice fields up to the Khamsum Yuley Namgay Chรถrten (= stupa). The pleasant sound of the Mo River is always in our ears and we can enjoy the view of the beautiful landscape with the mountains of the Gasa region. This tour takes about 1.5 hours. For water lovers, there are various activities in the cool water (optional). Back on four wheels, we continue our journey: this is not the usual pass crossing. In any case, we stop up here on the Dochu La (3,088 m) and can enjoy an unforgettable panorama of six 7,000-metre-high mountain giants on a clear day. It is one of the most spectacular in the entire Himalayan region and is lined up from left to right with the following peaks: Masagang (7,158m), Tsendagang (6,960m), Terigang (7,060m), Jejegangphugang (7,158m), Kangphugang (7,170m), Zongphugang (7,060m) and of course Gangkar Puensum (7,497m), the highest mountain in Ladakh. With these impressions in our luggage, we reach Thimphu (2,320m) and can move into our rooms straight away. A little later, at the Thimphu or Memorial Chรถrten, we watch the devotees circling the monument, turning prayer wheels and listening to the murmur of mantras. It was the idea of the third king of Bhutan (1929-1972) to commemorate peace and bliss with this chorten. Named Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, he is also revered as the father of modern Bhutan. We also devote our attention to the Trashi Chhoe fortress. It is the religious and political center. The King of Bhutan has his seat here. In the evening, we pay our respects to Buddha Shakyamuni at Kuensel Phodrang. Hotel, 3h / 75km drive (F/M/A)

  • Day 11 Day 11: Life As A Monk &Amp; Thimphu Sightseeing
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 11: Life As A Monk &Amp; Thimphu Sightseeing

What does the life of a Buddhist monk actually look like? The monks themselves give us answers in the Pangri Zampa monastery, which is only a short distance from Thimphu. Here they learn Buddhist philosophies and live their daily lives according to basic Buddhist values. We use the rest of the day to visit the textile museum, a school of painting and Bhutanโ€™s national library. The Simply-Bhutan Museum is also worth a visit, where old and almost forgotten traditions are presented interactively. A stamp with your own picture? This is available here in Thimphu and can be made possible on request during a stopover. Your family and friends back home will be amazed! Hotel (F/M/A)

  • Day 12 Day 12: Paro: Visiting Farmers &Amp; Lesson In Bhutanโ€™S National Sport
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 12: Paro: Visiting Farmers &Amp; Lesson In Bhutanโ€™S National Sport

Today, the trail leads us along the course of the river and through spectacular landscapes to our last stop in Bhutan, Paro (2,280 m). This small town also has fantastic religious and secular experiences in store for us. The two dzongs Ta and Rinpung are home to beautiful ancient thangkas, old weapons and armor as well as murals of samsara (the wheel of life), the four friends and the exciting life of Milarepa. We have already learned about the life of the monks. Now we take a look at the everyday life of a Bhutanese farming family and marvel at the colorful and decorative design of their houses and the fact that they are built entirely without nails. Do you know the national sport of the Bhutanese? During a lesson under professional guidance, we can try our hand at archery! With a bow, traditionally made of bamboo, you aim at a circle with a diameter of 30 centimetres, which is 120 meters away. Have fun! Hotel, 2h / 55km (F/M/A)

  • Day 13 Day 13: Hike To The "Tigerโ€™S Nest" &Amp; View To Chomolhari (7.326M)
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 13: Hike To The "Tigerโ€™S Nest" &Amp; View To Chomolhari (7.326M)

The most famous monastery in Bhutan - Taktsang - is perched 900m above the valley floor on a steep rock face. Our tour guide will tell you why the locals call it the "Tigerโ€™s Nest". The fact is that every Bhutanese is said to have visited this place once, the significance of which goes back to Guru Rinpoche, among others. So we join in and make a pilgrimage on foot up and back down (about 5 hours) to this important and imposing site. In the afternoon, we find out which place symbolizes the introduction of Buddhism here in Bhutan. Before that, however, we drive to Drukgyel Dzong and are treated to views of the sacred snow mountain Chomolhari (7,326m, also known as Chomo Lha Ri, Tibetan mountain of the goddess). Our final tour dinner is culturally accompanied by Cham dances, in which the artists wear masks and each movement is consciously performed and has its own specific meaning. Hotel (F/M/A)
