However, the city was abandoned just a few years after its completion due to a lack of water. Today, it is a remarkably well-preserved collection of red sandstone palaces, pavilions and mosques. The complex presents a unique blend of Hindu and Islamic styles, and it includes the 40-metre-high victory gate, Jami Masjid, the tomb of Shaik Salim Chisti, Panch Mahal, a cloistered courtyard and Pachchisi, where the Emperor played chess using slave girls as figurines. Continue to Agra and check in to the hotel. Enjoy a full afternoon tour of the Taj Mahal, one of the wonders of the world and one of the greatest love stories ever told. On the death of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, Shahjehan built her this memorial which took 20,000 men and over 17 years. Stay at the Taj Mahal until sunset and watch the glittering white marble change colour as the sun goes down over its domed roof. It is a truly magical sight. Overnight in Agra.

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Shah Jahan later transformed it into a palatial fortress and the red sandstone bastions now protect the dozens of beautiful white marble palaces and courtyards that he constructed inside. Explore Diwan-i-Am, the Public Hearing Room, where the emperor received members of the general public and heard their grievances, and Diwan-i-Khas, the Private Hearing Room, where he dealt with foreign dignitaries.
