Transport

Transport to and from arrival / departure points not included. Arrival and departure day is Sunday. Bikes are delivered Monday after breakfast. Groups of 4 or more can choose any start day at no extra cost. The closest airport for arrival is San Sebastián Airport, with connections only to Barcelona and Madrid. From the airport you can use public transport or taxi to reach the city. Biarritz Airport (France) is around 50 km away. Bilbao Airport is 100 km away and has good international flight connections. From Bilbao Airport there is a good bus service with PESA to San Sebastián with regular departures. San Sebastián has direct buses from many departure points and also the national RENFE train network. The tour ends in Santander. From here departure is by plane from Santander Airport, by bus, or by intercity RENFE train (there is also a direct train to Bilbao which takes around 3 hours! – bus is the better option). Personalised transfers are also available. Prices on request.

Guide

Self-guided tour. Iberocycle transports luggage to the next hotel. Cyclist do not travel as part of a group or with a guide, although they may coincide with other cyclists on the same trip. Our "IberoCycle On Call" service means we are always available for help or advice. Cyclist are provided with our own detailed Route Guide and maps. Fitter cyclist may extend stages at will.

Lunch and dinner are not included. Bike hire not included. Clients may bring own bikes – this will incur a 60 € bike case transfer supplement Tandem under request. Non-standard start dates charged at 99 € per person from 1-3 persons. Non-standard start date for 1 person – 300 €

Insurance

Personal insurance not included. Possession of holiday insurance is a booking condition. All travelers must take out an adequate insurance policy before begginning the trip. Proof of adequate insurance must be provided to be able to confirm the booking. This insurance should cover health and accident (if necessary), luggage loss or damage,departure delay or failure, trip cancellation. Any insurance claims are the liability of the insurance company and not Iberocycle.

  • Day 1 Day 1: Arrival Point To San Sebastián

      Day 1: Arrival Point To San Sebastián

      Arrival in San Sebastián. Tapas and txakolí wine in the Old Quarter. The beautiful promenade and beaches. It is worth spending an extra day here to enjoy this marvellous city.

  • Day 2 Day 2: San Sebastián To Deba

      Day 2: San Sebastián To Deba

      Bikes arrive after breakfast. The route leaves San Sebastián via Monte Igeldo, with magnificent views of the city. As we ride, we have the txakolí vineyards between us and the sea. Then the elegant seaside resort of Zarautz, the "Mouse" of Getaria, fishing villages such as Deba and finally the beautiful harbour and beach of Lekeitio on the shores of the Bay of Biscay. You may like to shorten the ride (to 48 km or 38 km) by taking the train to Zarautz or Zumaia. 71 km


  • Day 3 Day 3: Deba To Mundaka (Gernika)

      Day 3: Deba To Mundaka (Gernika)

      Along the coast again past unique geological flysch formations. The coastline is impressive, the fishing village of Elantxobe is beautiful and shortly after we turn inland along the Urdaibai Estuary Nature Reserve to the town of Guernica, sadly famous due to the Spanish Civil War bombing and the painting by Picasso. Accommodation in Guernica or the nearby village of Mundaka on the estuary with its world-famous surfing wave.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Mundaka To Getxo (Bilbao)

      Day 4: Mundaka To Getxo (Bilbao)

      Visit the fishing village of Bermeo. A climb then offers a fantastic view of the famous chapel on the island of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (Game of Thrones). Past the coastal villages of Bakio, Armintxa and Plentzia to reach Getxo, with magnificent villas built by the Basque industrialists. Our hotel is at the mouth of the estuary of the River Nervión by the famous 19th century bridge Puente de Vizcaya. Metro allows easy access to the city centre and the Guggenheim Museum.

  • Day 5 Day 5: Getxo To Castro Urdiales

      Day 5: Getxo To Castro Urdiales

      Cross the River Nervión using the Puente de Vizcaya transporter bridge, an experience in itself. Then follow the estuary to the fishing village of Zierbena and turn west again along the beautiful coastline. Then we say goodbye to the Basque Country and enter Cantabria with only a short distance to the charming fishing town of Castro Urdiales with is pretty harbour and striking gothic church.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Castro Urdiales To Santoña

      Day 6: Castro Urdiales To Santoña

      From Castro Urdiales, we head west along the magnificent coastline. We shortly reach Sonabia with the impressive cliffs home to a colony of majestic griffon vultures which we should see soaring above us as we ride. We then reach the fishing port of Laredo and head out along its enormous beach towards Santoña and the backdrop of the Monte Buciero. A short ferry crossing takes us across the river estuary. Santoña is famous for its anchovies, a local delicacy. From here it is only a short ride to our hotel on the beach of Berria.

  • Day 7 Day 7: Santoña To Santander

      Day 7: Santoña To Santander

      From Santoña our route takes us westwards, parallel to the coast, with beautiful green scenery, beaches, cliffs. Finally we reach Somo with its beaches and surfers. A short ride takes us to Pedreña, with its world famous golf course where Severiano Ballesteros was raised and learned to play golf. From here we take a boat across the Bay of Santander, to reach the elegant capital of Cantabria.
