Itinerary of your trip Namibia: Kaokoveld, Damaraland & Etosha

  • Day 1 Arrival In Windhoek, Pick Up From The Airport
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Arrival In Windhoek, Pick Up From The Airport

You will be picked up at the airport in Windhoek by 12 noon. If time permits, you will visit the small Daan Viljoen National Park with its large herds of zebra, wildebeest, blesbok, giraffe and ostriches.

In the afternoon, we visit the well-kept Windhoek with its slightly German small-town charm. However, the palm trees on Independence Avenue clearly convey that you are on vacation. In the evening, you can chat with your travel companions in a quaint Namibian steakhouse.

Overnight stay: guesthouse; (F), (approx. 50 km)

  • Day 2 Spitzkoppe
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Spitzkoppe

Our destination for the day is the Spitzkoppe, the "Matterhorn of Namibia". We will take a one-hour hike to view the local rock paintings and explore the area. You will learn everything you need to know about correct behavior in the bush. We will spend the night at the foot of the Spitzkoppe.

Overnight: tent, no accommodation; (F/M/A), (approx. 280 km)

  • Day 3 Burnt Mountain And Round Red Granules
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Burnt Mountain And Round Red Granules

After a two-hour drive, we arrive in Uis, a small mining village. We then pass the Brandberg. The landscape is hilly and dominated by red, round granite peaks. In the afternoon we reach a rustic camp in the Huab Valley. From here, you can hike along the Aba-Huab riverbed or climb one of the surrounding granite peaks. With a bit of luck, you might even spot the first desert elephants.

      Overnight: tent, S.v.; (F/M/A), (approx. 220 km)

  • Day 4 From Twyfelfontein To The Ongongo Waterfall
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

From Twyfelfontein To The Ongongo Waterfall

In the morning, you and your travel companions will visit the Twyfelfontein rock paintings (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Again and again you will come across free-roaming herds of springbok, oryx and mountain zebra, but giraffes are also not uncommon. In the afternoon, we leave the gravel road and work our way to the Ongongo Waterfall. The catchment basin of the Ongongo Falls is an ideal spot for a swim. As it is so beautiful here, we stay for the night. At the campfire, you can enjoy the starry sky above you and the aroma of dinner simmering away.

      Overnight: tent, S.v.; (F/M/A), (approx. 230 km)

  • Day 5 Off Into The Wilderness
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Off Into The Wilderness

We soon reach Sesfontein, our last opportunity for the time being to get water, fuel and food. Sesfontein is the end of what is generally referred to as a road in this country and for the next few days there are only off-road routes. We will drive southwest along the Ganamub riverbed until we reach the Hoanib. This dry area is not only rich in game, but also in sandy passages. Large herds of various antelope species can be found here, as well as giraffes, leopards, black rhinos and the rare desert elephants ... It is one of the last wild animal paradises. Camp is set up in a suitable spot and you spend the night in the absolute wilderness. The chain of hills running parallel to the Hoanib offers us an excellent opportunity to explore the course of the river on foot without being noticed by the game, as there is plenty of cover from elephants, rhinos and other animals.

Overnight: tent, no accommodation; (F/M/A), (approx. 150 km)

  • Day 6 Rich Wildlife Along The Hoarusib River
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Rich Wildlife Along The Hoarusib River

We follow the course of the Hoanib River a little further, because in the early morning hours you not only have the best opportunity to observe animals, but also the ideal photo light. The route leads through a flat desert area. In the afternoon we reach the Hoarusib. There is running water here all year round in places, and the wildlife is correspondingly rich. But what will overwhelm you is the unique landscape. In the afternoon we reach a wild and romantic bush camp (Purros), where we set up camp for two nights.

      Overnight: tent, S.v.; (F/M/A), (approx. 110 km)

  • Day 7 In Search Of Desert Elephants And Desert Lions
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

In Search Of Desert Elephants And Desert Lions

In the morning you go on a game drive through the Hoarusib and go in search of desert elephants and desert lions. You will be back at camp by lunchtime and have the afternoon at leisure.

      Overnight: tent, S.v.; (F/M/A), (approx. 80 km)

  • Day 8 Via Sesfontein To Opuwo
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Via Sesfontein To Opuwo

We travel along bumpy four-wheel drive tracks. We pass both inhabited and uninhabited settlements. Despite the desert-like habitat, oryx antelopes and springboks can always be seen. Ostriches occasionally race against our vehicle. We arrive in Sesfontein at lunchtime, where we replenish our supplies. Towards evening we reach a nice camp with a swimming pool near Opuwo.

      Overnight: tent, S.v.; (F/M/A), (approx. 250 km)

  • Day 9 Kunene River And Epupa Waterfalls
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Kunene River And Epupa Waterfalls

In Opuwo, you will experience a melting pot of different peoples. As we still want to reach the Epupa Falls today, the journey soon continues. We pass the villages of the Ovahimba people more and more often. We find a very nice campsite by the Kunene River and its unique waterfall. The waters of the Kunene thunder down 50 meters with a loud roar. The sun conjures up a fantastic rainbow effect in the clouds of water. We stay at this wonderful spot for two nights.

      Overnight: tent, S.v.; (F/M/A), (approx. 180 km)

  • Day 10 With The Himba
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      With The Himba

In the morning, you will get to know the area better. We visit a Himba village about 8 km away and gain interesting insights into the way of life of this nomadic people. In the afternoon, we take a one-hour hike up a mountain from where you can see the waterfalls in their entirety.

      Overnight: tent, S.v.; (F/M/A), (approx. 20 km)

  • Day 11 Drive To Etosha National Park
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Drive To Etosha National Park

Along the Kunene we follow the newly built road east to Swarbooysdrift and then on to the Ruacana Waterfalls. Today we want to get as far as Etosha National Park. The beautiful camp is so close to the park that at night the concert of hyenas, jackals and lions is unmistakable.

      Overnight: tent, S.v.; (F/A), (approx. 360 km)

  • Day 12 Etosha National Park
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Etosha National Park

We enter Etosha National Park through the western Otjivasondu Gate. Some animal species (e.g. mountain zebra) can only be found in this region of the park. Our camp for the next night is not far from Okaukuejo. Here the waterhole is illuminated by spotlights and the animals appear in large numbers every evening and can be observed and photographed in peace and quiet.

      Overnight: tent, S.v.; (F/M/A), (approx. 180 km)

  • Day 13 Cheetah Project On Okonjima
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Cheetah Project On Okonjima

We leave the national park to visit the cheetah project on Okonjima. We reach the AfriCat Foundation in the early afternoon and pitch our tents there for the night. In the afternoon we visit the cheetah/leopard sanctuary, learn about the keeping of the big cats and experience them up close.

Overnight: tent; (F/M/A), (approx. 250 km).

  • Day 14 Return To Windhoek, Return Journey Or Extension
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Return To Windhoek, Return Journey Or Extension

At the Okahandja timber market you have a good opportunity to buy some nice souvenirs. We will arrive in Windhoek around 2 p.m. and a return flight in the evening would be possible.

      (F), (approx. 250 km)

Individual return journey from Windhoek airport, arrival in Europe the next day.

Or end the trip at your leisure and book an extension on a private farm (game lodge).
