      Day 2: Muscat

After arrival at the airport you will be transferred to your hotel. After a hearty breakfast, you will start the day invigorated and full of anticipation! A city tour of Muscat awaits you, the capital of the Sultanate, which lies picturesquely by the sea, gleaming white and surrounded by barren brown mountains. Impressive modern Arabic architecture contrasts with the oriental hustle and bustle in the souk. Impressive is the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, the largest and most worth seeing mosque in the country. This architectural gem impresses with a hand-knotted carpet measuring almost 4,300 meters and with an enormous chandelier. After visiting the mosque, you will continue to Nakhl and visit the impressive fortress, which has recently been extensively renovated and is located directly in front of the gigantic backdrop of the steep and barren mountain massif of Jebel Nakhl. Before returning to Muscat, there will be some time to relax at the Nakhl hot springs. Back in Muscat, you will now check into your hotel and continue your sightseeing program after a short breather. Look forward to the magnificent Sultanโ€™s Palace (exterior visit), which is flanked by two 16th century Portuguese forts. Get an insight into Omanโ€™s art and culture at the Bait-al-Zubair Museum. Afterwards, stroll through the winding alleys of the traditional and old Muttrah Souk, where the air is filled with the scent of fine spices and incense. Be enchanted by the range of goods on offer and haggle with the merchants. 1 night in Muscat. (F)

Today you will continue your journey through a rugged coastal mountain landscape to the seafaring city of Sur. During the drive you will pass the coastal village of Quriyat and Bimah Sinkhole, a limestone crater with turquoise waters. Afterwards, you will reach Sur, once an important maritime trading center, via Wadi Tiwi. 1 night in Sur. (F)

  • Day 4 Day 4: Wahiba Desert
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 4: Wahiba Desert

A visit to a dhow shipyard will give you an insight into shipbuilding, the old traditional craft in the Sultanate. Only in Sur you can still see the making of these traditional wooden ships. Afterwards you will leave Sur and continue to the beautiful Wadi Bani Khalid. The large natural pools with their turquoise waters are a wonderful invitation to take a refreshing swim and let the scenery wash over you. A highlight of any visit to the Sultanate of Oman is the Wahiba Desert. At the edge of the desert you will change into a four-wheel drive vehicle. The drive through the spectacular desert landscape with its golden sand dunes to your desert camp is a unique experience. Look forward to the sea of sand and with a little luck enjoy a beautiful sunset over the dunes as well as a sparkling starry sky in the evening. 1 night in a desert camp. (B/A)

On the way you will visit the colorful womenโ€™s market in Ibra, which takes place every Wednesday. Here, Bedouin women price their wares. Afterwards, continue to the Hadjar Mountains to the Palace of Jabrin, which is one of the most beautiful and interesting buildings in Oman. The palace got back its old, fairytale-like state with the impressive ceiling paintings after a comprehensive renovation in 1984. Here you also get, thanks to the furnishings with traditional objects and antique furniture, a particularly vivid insight into the courtly life of medieval Oman. After a short drive, you will finally reach the ancient capital of Nizwa. 2 nights there. (F)

Here coffee is roasted, flour is ground, bread is baked and other everyday activities are shown. After a detour to the mountain village of Misfah with its beautiful terraced fields on steep mountain slopes and the ancient Falaj irrigation system (UNESCO World Heritage Site), you will continue your journey by off-road vehicle to Jebel Shams. From a plateau located at 2,000 meters above sea level, you will have a gigantic view of a 1,000 meter deep gorge, which is rightly called the "Grand Canyon" of Oman. In the late afternoon, make your way back to your hotel in Nizwa. (F)

A short tour then takes you through the oasis town of Nizwa with its historic buildings, which was the capital of Oman in the 6th and 7th centuries. You will visit the fort, which can be recognized from afar by its monumental fortress tower. Then visit the souk, famous for its traditional silver and copper works.
