West Coast, Ghost Towns And Isfjord System 6ร—(B/M/A)

Depending on the weather and ice conditions, the expedition leader determines the route of the next days. At the beginning of autumn, the tours can still lead along the west coast north to Ny ร…lesund or into the large fjord systems on the southwest coast of the island. As winter approaches, the tours become more focused on the numerous glaciers, bays and settlements in the central Isfjord system.

      Possible landing sites could be:

Alkhornet: An arctic fox family has its den at the foot of the bird rock. Nearby, at Trygghamna, are the remains of a 17th century English whaling station and the ruins of an 18th century settlement of Russian Pomors.

Bellsund: The fjord system with its large tributary fjords offers fascinating geology and beautiful scenery, such as the long narrow island of Akseloya. Fridtjofhamna is home to the often calving Fridtjofbreen glacier, surrounded by gorgeous peaks. You walk in the historic footsteps of hunters, whalers and coal miners. Polar bears are occasionally found in Bellsund and you will try to track them down. Belugas (white whales) also come to the area regularly.

Ny ร…lesund: The northernmost railroad in the world used to run in this former mining settlement - you can still admire the locomotive and some of the wagons of the coal railroad there. Ny ร…lesund has since been transformed into a modern research station. A stroll through the town is worthwhile and should also take you to the old anchor mast where Amundsen (with the Norge, 1926) and Nobile (with the Italia, 1928) moored their airships on their way to the North Pole.

Isfjord system: On cloudless nights, you will experience air temperatures as low as -10 ยฐC here. This already leads to the formation of new sea ice in some fjord zones. These nights offer high chances to observe the mysterious northern lights. Numerous bays and glacier fronts can be visited like the impressive Sveabreen or the Nordenskiรถld glacier.

Barentsburg: The only settlement on Spitsbergen inhabited by Russians and the second largest town in the archipelago is also worth a visit. A walk through the streets feels a bit like a time travel to the Soviet Union. Meet the very friendly locals over a beer at the worldโ€™s northernmost brewery, visit the Pomoren Museum, which is well worth seeing, and wave at the historic statue of Lenin.

Pyramids: This former Russian mining settlement is a unique ghost town. Once a Communist showcase settlement, absolutely isolated in the middle of Arctic desert, only the massive buildings - including the northernmost statue of Lenin - remain today. Coal was mined in Pyramiden until 1998. Residents moved away, but most things stayed where they were. One gets the impression that the city could be repopulated at any moment....

Finally we head back towards Longyearbyen. 6 nights on board.
