Itinerary of your trip Around Spitsbergen

  • Day 1 Day 1: Arrival And Embarkation
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 1: Arrival And Embarkation

Individual arrival in Longyearbyen (we recommend arriving one day before embarkation). Depending on arrival time, there may be time for a stroll through the small town. Embarkation in the port of Longyearbyen around 4 pm. Cruise through the Isfjorden in the early evening. Overnight stay on board.

  • Day 2 Day 2-3: West And North Coast - Ny ร…lesund
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 2-3: West And North Coast - Ny ร…lesund

You explore one of the fjords along the west coast, e.g. the Krossfjord region. Spectacular glacier falls await you, as do bird cliffs where thousands of kittiwakes and guillemots are busy rearing their chicks. Arctic foxes can often be seen searching for helpless young birds at the foot of the bird colonies. With a bit of luck, polar bears can also be spotted here. On Zodiac tours along the glaciers, it is not uncommon to see bearded seals resting on ice floes, and it is also possible to visit the former mining settlement of Ny ร…lesund. The northernmost railroad in the world used to run here - you can still admire the locomotive and some of the coal train carriages. Ny ร…lesund has since been transformed into a modern research station. A stroll through the town takes you to the breeding grounds of various geese and the defensive Arctic terns. You can also take a walk to the old anchor mast where Amundsen (with the Norge, 1926) and Nobile (with the Italia, 1928) moored their airships on their way to the North Pole, and then the ship sets course for the northernmost archipelago of Spitsbergen, the Seven Islands. From here it is only 540 miles to the North Pole - the habitat of polar bears, walruses and the rare ivory gull. 2 overnight stays on board.

  • Day 3 Day 4-5: In The Pack Ice
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 4-5: In The Pack Ice

The ship sets course for Svalbardโ€™s northernmost archipelago, the Seven Islands. If the ice conditions allow, you will spend several hours in the pack ice, where polar bears, walruses and the rare ivory gulls live. You have time to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the Arctic nature in peace and quiet and look out for polar bears. During possible landings on the north coast, you may be able to observe walruses or learn more about the whaling times in the 17th century on short hikes. 2 overnight stays on board.

  • Day 4 Day 6-7: Hinlopen Strait - East Spitsbergen
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6-7: Hinlopen Strait - East Spitsbergen

Impressive drift ice fields often characterize the drive through the Hinlopen Strait and invite you to take a zodiac tour around the chunks of ice. Bearded seals and ringed seals are frequently observed here, but polar bears are also regularly spotted, and you pass Alkefjellet - where countless thick-billed guillemots breed on an almost vertical cliff, where there is a constant coming and going and loud bickering. Or you can take it a little easier in the Augustabukta region on Nordaustlandet, where reindeer, short-billed geese and walruses live. Along the impressive coastline of Nordaustlandet you can enjoy the view of the third largest ice cap in the world and further south lie the islands of Barentsรธya and Edgeรธya, separated by Freeman Sound. A landing in Sundneset is planned. Here, an old trapperโ€™s hut tells of the hard life of fur hunters in the Arctic, and reindeer and white-fronted geese can often be found in the area. Or take a trip to Diskobukta: the beach is littered with Siberian driftwood and whale bones. Nearby, kittiwakes, black guillemots and the predatory glaucous gulls inhabit the walls of a narrow gorge. Arctic foxes and sometimes polar bears with their cubs often patrol here. 2 nights on board.

  • Day 5 Day 8-9: Fjords Of South Spitsbergen
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 8-9: Fjords Of South Spitsbergen

The large fjord systems of Hornsund and Bellsund are once again worthwhile destinations - here there are good opportunities for seal and polar bear watching.numerous side fjords, in which breathtaking glaciers roll their ice masses down the slopes into the sea, framed by rugged peaks that illustrate why the Dutch explorers called the archipelago "Spitsbergen", form the backdrop for activities. For example, a landing is planned at Ahlstrandhalvรธya at the mouth of the Van Keulen Fjord, where countless skeletons of beluga whales bear witness to the time of senseless slaughter in the late 19th century. In the meantime, the population has recovered and you can once again encounter belugas in larger groups. The tundra at the end of Recherchefjord also offers good conditions. Small herds of reindeer often graze here, and finally we head back towards Longyearbyen. 2 overnight stays on board.

  • Day 6 Day 10: Longyearbyen - Disembarkation
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 10: Longyearbyen - Disembarkation

The ship arrives in Longyearbyen around midnight on the night of day 9/10. Disembarkation depending on flight time (no breakfast on night flights) and individual journey home.
