      Panama City Tour (F)

In the morning, you will set off on your first tour of this fascinating city, which was founded in 1519. The enchanting backdrop of skyscrapers, noble villas and green hills will inspire you.

First you will see Panama Viejo from the 16th century. Then you will head along the riverbank to the old town of Casco Antiguo. Today, the oldest facilities and buildings of the modern city can be found here; the district is known locally as Casco Viejo or Casco Antiguo. On a walking tour, you will see many unique colonial buildings, some still largely preserved in their original state and others lovingly and colorfully restored. The historic quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has become the country’s center for art, design and cultural revival in recent years. Many new bars, rooftop terraces, restaurants and hotels have opened here. The drive then takes you to the Causeway, from where you have a magnificent view of the Panama City skyline. Then it’s off to the Miraflores locks of the Panama Canal. Here you will gain a first insight into the operation and dimensions of the famous Panama Canal. The terrace offers a unique view of the locks and the ships that pass through the locks on their way to the Pacific or Atlantic. The Panama Canal is one of the most important waterways in the world. Around 14,000 ships pass through it every year, and around six percent of world trade passes through it. You can find out lots of interesting facts about the canal in the associated museum.

  • Day 4 Panama City - El Valle De Antón (F)
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Panama City - El Valle De Antón (F)

In the morning, drive westwards on the famous Centenario Bridge to the tranquil small town of El Valle de Antón. Before leaving the town, visit a local fruit and vegetable market. There are bound to be some tropical fruits that you haven’t seen before. You can also buy fresh fruit to taste on the way.

Here in the mountains of Cocle province is the largest populated volcanic crater in the world. Once a crater lake, it was later settled by the Indians of the surrounding mountains. El Valle de Antón has a very pleasant climate and unique birdlife. On site, you have the opportunity to get to know the area better with the help of short hikes. For example, you can visit the "El Macho" waterfall, "La Piedra Pintada", a rock face with pre-Columbian stone carvings or the "Butterfly Haven", a butterfly farm, or treat yourself to a face mask in the warm mineral springs "Pozos Termales".

Today you return to the Panamericana and continue westwards. In Natá de los Caballeros, you can visit the historic church. The town is one of the oldest in the country. Of the colonial buildings, only the church, which was renovated with donations from the German Embassy and is one of the oldest on the entire continent, dating back to 1520, the year the town was founded, can still be visited today.

Before continuing to the pretty and historic village of Parita, almost an insider tip, a typical Panamanian lunch awaits you. In Parita, you will visit a local make-up artist in his house. He will explain how the typical Panamanian diablico masks are made and of course you can also buy one as a souvenir on the spot.

Afterwards, visit a private house where you will see how the polleras are made by hand over many hours.

The pollera is the Panamanian national costume for women, a beautiful, finely crafted traditional dress and is basically a colonial legacy from Spain. The value of a very good pollera is around 3000 US dollars.

After around 1 ½ hours’ drive, you will reach the idyllic village, which is hidden in the hills of the province of Los Santos. After a welcome with music and a refreshing drink, the tour of the village begins. You will look over the shoulders of the locals and see how various products such as hats and musical instruments are made by hand. The production of each product is explained step by step. You will then visit an original sugar cane mill, which was built by the inhabitants of the village, is still in use and is powered by a horse. You will learn how the sugar cane is pressed and then processed in a self-built clay oven. A tasting of the freshly pressed sugar cane juice is of course a must. Depending on the season, a visit to a tobacco plantation is also possible, where the processing of the tobacco plants is demonstrated. Afterwards, visit the river "Rio Oria" where you may see children playing in the river and, with a bit of luck, hear howler monkeys in the distance.

After the tour, there is a typical lunch with products from the village in the hostess’s house.

All proceeds from this excursion go to the inhabitants and the Oria Arribas school.

After the visit to Oria Arriba, there is a visit to the beach on the Pacific coast. Relax on the beach and enjoy a dip in the waves. Return to the hotel in the afternoon.

But that’s not all, along the way you will also see many native plants and exotic animals, watch the local Ngöbe Indian women at work and, of course, taste raw chocolate.

Your visit also helps the community, as all profits from the tour and part of the chocolate sales go towards reforestation and educational projects such as a computer room and a library. Perhaps the most important fund is the one for medical emergencies.
