Transport

You are welcome to ride in the van at any time - no explanation required. Some want a lift for just a few miles; others have ridden in the van for the entire trip. Itโ€™s your vacation - you decide. We use a fleet of specially ordered and customized 15-passenger vans. Most have a seven-liter V-10 engine, high rear axle ratio, and heavy-duty trailer towing package for efficiently moving a van full of people pulling a large trailer full of luggage and food. Each van also has heavy-duty professional bicycle racks on top of a custom-made, steelwork platform on the roof. An additional bicycle rack mounted on a front hitch allows us to quickly load and unload a bicycle when a guest wants a short ride in the van.

Accommodation

Our regional expertise, a constant re-evaluation of last yearโ€™s inns, and continuing search for the best experience ensure that our lodging is always among the finest the area has to offer. By limiting the number of guests on each trip, we expand our choices and are able to fit into some smaller, award-winning bed and breakfasts and country inns that wouldnโ€™t be able to accommodate a larger group. Lodging is based upon two people sharing a room with a private bath. If youโ€™re traveling solo on any of our trips, weโ€™ll assign you a roommate of the same gender, and often of the same age range. There is no extra charge if we canโ€™t find you a roommate, even if you sign up the day before the trip starts. You can guarantee yourself a private room and bath if you pay the Single Supplement Fee. Occasionally a room with two beds consists of one bed plus a rollaway bed or sofa bed. Call our office to see if this is applicable to the trip and date you select.

Meals

All meals except for one lunch and one dinner are included in the cost of your tour. On the days that youโ€™re on your own for a meal, there will be ample options within walking distance of our location. At Bicycle Adventures we like to eat well. Dinner is eaten together at the best restaurant in the area each night. If we have to shuttle everyone a short distance to get to that special place, we do it. At most restaurants, you order what you want from the menu. Except for alcohol, everything is included, even appetizers, salad, soup, and dessert. Breakfast is typically provided by the hotels and inns that we stay at, but if thereโ€™s a local spot known for great breakfast, weโ€™ll find it and youโ€™ll be treated to a nutritious meal to start off your day. Lunch is provided at a state park or similar scenic setting midway during the dayโ€™s ride. Guests are always surprised at the variety and quality of lunches we prepare. Besides sandwich fixings and cold drinks, we offer fresh fruits and vegetables and hot lunches such as tortellini with pesto or veggie burritos. If you prefer a certain item of food or drink, just let your tour guide know and we will be sure to prepare just the right lunch to keep your energy up for the rest of the day. During the day water, fruit juices, soft drinks, energy bars, fruit, and snacks are available from the van. A cold beer from our cooler waits at the end of the day, and you can relive the dayโ€™s highlights at our wine and cheese party before dinner.

Guide

Our guides are selected and trained for unparalleled personal service. Their backgrounds vary, but all share a love for the outdoors and, most importantly, a desire to help people make the most of their vacation. There are several ski instructors, a political analyst, an Emmy-winning journalist, and a college professor, among others. Almost all are college graduates. All are mature adults with expertise in leading our tours and extensive knowledge of the region we travel through. Almost all of last yearโ€™s guides will be returning to lead our trips again, so you can count on having experienced leaders who love what they do.

Itinerary of your trip Valley Of Fire And Death Valley

  • Day 1 Meet In Las Vegas (Or At Lake Las Vegas, If Youโ€™Re Coming In Early). Ride To The Engineering Marvel That Is Hoover Dam.
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Meet In Las Vegas (Or At Lake Las Vegas, If Youโ€™Re Coming In Early). Ride To The Engineering Marvel That Is Hoover Dam.

Completed in 1936, the Hoover Dam holds back 112 miles of the Colorado River, creating Lake Mead โ€“ Americaโ€™s largest reservoir. While it has long been surpassed as the worldโ€™s tallest dam, it remains an engineering marvel of its time. An entire city โ€“ Boulder City โ€“ was built to complete its construction. Super-sized fridges had to be designed to cool the massive concrete blocks which otherwise would have required over a century to harden! Marvel at the death-defying tales of Native American โ€œhigh scalersโ€ who worked on the vertiginous canyon walls. Weโ€™ll have lunch at the Visitors Center with plenty of time to explore the sights and exhibits. Afterward, you can shuttle or pedal back to the Hilton Lake Las Vegas.

Glowing red-gold Aztec sandstone is highlighted with 3,000-year-old Anasazi petroglyphs, ancient trees, beaver tail and cholla cacti. Roadtrippers says, "...it will have you reaching for the camera at every turn." Springtime is ablaze with desert marigold, indigo bush, and desert mallow. Watch for desert bighorn sheep!  Spend another night at the Hilton Lake Las Vegas.

Transfer to Death Valley National Park this morning. Pedal from the ghost town of Rhyolite on the parkโ€™s eastern edge up to Daylight Pass. The view from the summit (4,317 feet) captures Death Valley in microcosm: sun-blanched, desolate and vast. Cruise a 26-mile downhill for your first look at the valley up close. Hike Golden Canyon this morning, a 3-mile stroll along a path lined with massive boulders and pastel-hued dunes. Finish at Zabriskie Point, one of Death Valleyโ€™s most famous viewpoints. The maze of wildly eroded and naturally painted badlands makes a great photo spot. Snap a few, then shuttle up to another priceless viewpoint: Danteโ€™s View, perched 5500 feet above Badwater Basin. Can you spot the tiny specks of people strolling the salt flats below? Take in a panoramic eagle-eye view of Telescope Peak, the Black Mountains and virtually the entirety of Death Valley National Park. The afternoon is yours to relax at the Oasis and/or enjoy other nearby attractions. Dinner is on your own tonight.

  • Day 5 Shuttle To Ubehebe Crater For A Hike Around The Rim, Then Coast Downhill To Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes.
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Shuttle To Ubehebe Crater For A Hike Around The Rim, Then Coast Downhill To Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes.

The Ubehebe ("yoo-bee-hee-bee") Crater is a 600-foot-deep crater that was created when hot magma met the groundwater in this region, creating a giant bubble of steam and gas that exploded from the earth. Shuttle to the crater in the morning for a 1.5-mile hike around the rim. Then hop on your trusty velocipede for a mostly downhill pedal to Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. Should these dunes appear somehow familiar, you may recognize them as the dunes of planet Tatooine in the original Star Wars movie. Lunch is on your own today.

Admire Artistโ€™s Palette, where oxidation of the metals in the rock โ€œpaintsโ€ the hills an amazing rainbow of colors. Stroll the salt flats while we ready the bicycles for the ride back to the Oasis. Enjoy a celebratory lunch and a welcome shower before you hop into the van and head back to Las Vegas.
